The Deal That Changes Everything

Emily Carter stood outside the towering glass doors of Kingsley Group, her fingers tightening around the envelope in her hands.

Inside it was her last hope.

And possibly… her biggest mistake.

“Miss Carter?” the receptionist called. “Mr. Kingsley is expecting you.”

Expecting.

As if he already knew she would come.

Emily forced a small nod. “Thank you.”

The elevator ride felt endless.

Her reflection stared back at her—pale, tense, and barely holding together.

This is for Dad. No matter what happens… I have to do this.

The doors opened to the top floor.

Silence greeted her.

Cold. Sharp. Intimidating.

At the end of the hallway, the office doors were already open.

As if inviting her in.

Or trapping her.

Emily stepped inside.

And froze.

Adrian Kingsley.

The man everyone feared.

Tall, composed, and impossibly distant. His presence alone filled the room, heavy and suffocating.

He didn’t stand.

Didn’t smile.

Didn’t even pretend to be polite.

“You’re late.”

Emily’s throat tightened. “I—”

“Sit.”

Not a request.

An order.

She sat.

Her hands trembled slightly as she placed the envelope on his desk.

“Mr. Kingsley, I’m here because my father—”

“I know.”

The words cut her off instantly.

Adrian leaned back in his chair, his sharp gaze fixed on her.

“Your father’s company is drowning in debt. One week before bankruptcy.” His voice was calm. Too calm. “You came to beg.”

Emily felt her cheeks burn.

“…Yes.”

Silence filled the room.

Heavy. Unforgiving.

Then—

“I’ll help you.”

Her head snapped up.

Hope surged through her chest—too fast, too dangerous.

“You will?”

A faint smile touched his lips.

But there was no warmth in it.

“I’ll pay off the debt. Your father’s company will survive.”

Her heart pounded.

This was everything she needed.

Everything she came for.

But something didn’t feel right.

“What do you want in return?” she asked carefully.

Adrian stood.

Slow. Controlled. Powerful.

Every step he took toward her made it harder to breathe.

Then he stopped right in front of her.

Close enough to make her pulse race.

“Marry me.”

Silence.

Deafening.

Emily blinked.

“…What?”

“A contract marriage. One year,” he said, as if discussing a business deal. “You will act as my wife in public. In return, your father is saved.”

Her chest tightened.

“This isn’t funny.”

“I don’t joke.”

His eyes locked onto hers.

Cold.

Certain.

Unavoidable.

Emily stood abruptly, shaking her head.

“You expect me to marry a stranger?”

“You don’t have the luxury to refuse.”

The truth hit harder than anything else.

Because it was true.

Adrian turned and walked back to his desk, picking up a document.

“The terms are simple,” he said.

“No love. No expectations. No interference in my personal life.”

He placed the contract in front of her.

“And when the year ends, we walk away like nothing happened.”

Emily stared at the paper.

Her fingers slowly curled into fists.

“This is insane.”

“Is it?”

She looked up.

He was watching her again—that same unreadable expression.

“You came here to save your father,” he continued. “This is the price.”

Her mind raced.

If she refused—

Her father would lose everything.

If she agreed—

She would bind her life to a man she didn’t know.

A man she didn’t trust.

“…Why me?” she asked quietly.

For a brief moment—

Adrian paused.

Then—

“You were the most convenient choice.”

Something about that answer felt like a lie.

But she had no time to question it.

Emily took a deep breath.

Closed her eyes.

And signed the contract.

When she looked up—

Adrian was already watching her.

As if he had been waiting for this moment.

For a very long time.

“Good choice, Mrs. Kingsley.”

Her heart skipped.

Mrs. Kingsley.

The name felt foreign.

Dangerous.

Irreversible.

And she had no idea—
