The massive wrought-iron gates of the Sterling Estate swung open like the jaws of a mythical beast, swallowing our three-car motorcade into a world of dark luxury and oppressive wealth.

I stared out the blacked-out window, my heart hammering against my ribs. A long, winding driveway flanked by towering pine trees led up to a sprawling limestone mansion that looked less like a home and more like an impenetrable fortress. High-security cameras blinked red in the dimming dusk light, and armed guards in dark uniforms patrolled the perimeter with trained, silent precision.

My phone was still heavy in my hand, the screen dark, but the memory of that sniper scope photo burned beneath my eyelids. A red laser dot directly on our window.

"Chloe."

Alexander’s deep, gravelly voice shattered my spiral. I snapped my head toward him. He had already opened his door as the SUV came to a smooth halt beneath the grand portico. The dome light illuminated the sharp, angular planes of his face, making him look like a statue carved out of marble and shadow.

"We're here," he said flatly, stepping out into the crisp evening air. He turned and offered a long-fingered hand to help me down.

I hesitated for half a second before placing my palm in his. His grip was warm, solid, and completely unyielding. The contrast between his fiery touch and his icy demeanor sent a traitorous jolt straight up my arm.

Max tumbled out right after me, grabbing Lily’s hand with an energetic bounce. "Come on, Lily! I'm going to show you the playroom! It has a giant train set and three fortresses!"

"Fortress!" Lily squealed, her previous fear entirely forgotten as she let out a high-pitched laugh, her little light-up sneakers flashing bright pink against the polished stone steps.

"Slow down, Max," Alexander commanded, though his tone held a rare softening that was reserved exclusively for his son. "Take Lily to Mrs. Gable in the kitchen. She has warm milk and dinner prepared."

"Okay, Daddy!" Max shouted back over his shoulder, pulling Lily through the grand double doors held open by a immaculate butler in a black suit.

As the children's laughter echoed into the vast entryway, the heavy oak doors clicked shut, locking out the chilly autumn wind—and leaving Alexander and me standing alone on the threshold.

The main foyer was breathtaking and suffocating all at once. Soaring ceilings with crystal chandeliers cast intricate shadows over white marble floors, while a double sweeping staircase curved up toward the second level. It was magnificent, but it held no warmth. It felt like a museum built for a ghost.

"Mrs. Gable will bring your luggage to the primary suite," Alexander said smoothly, unbuttoning his tailored suit jacket and tossing it over the arm of a waiting staff member.

I froze, turning to face him. "Primary suite? Singular?"

Alexander raised an eyebrow, his ice-blue eyes fixing onto mine with cool amusement. "Did you expect us to sleep in separate wings, Chloe? We are getting married in less than twelve hours. The staff gossips, security needs a single focal point to protect, and more importantly, my son checks on me in the middle of the night when he has nightmares. We play the part completely, or we don't play it at all."

"This is a contract, Mr. Sterling," I said, stepping closer and lowering my voice so the surrounding servants wouldn't hear. "I agreed to be your fake wife to save my father and protect my niece. I did not agree to surrender my personal boundaries."

"You surrendered your boundaries the moment you walked into my office begging for three hundred thousand dollars," Alexander purred, closing the distance between us until he was towering over me. The intoxicating scent of cedarwood, dark espresso, and crisp night air rolled off him in waves. He tilted his head down, his dark gaze locking onto my lips. "And as long as you carry my name, Mrs. Sterling, your safety is my responsibility. I don't leave my assets vulnerable."

"I am not an asset," I snapped, my eyes flashing with fire.

"Then stop acting like a victim and start acting like my partner," he countered, his voice dropping into a dangerous whisper that resonated in my chest.

Before I could hurl another retort at him, a sharp chime rang out from his wrist. He glanced down at his watch, his jaw tightening into iron.

"The legal team has arrived with the final contract documents," Alexander said, stepping back and instantly restoring the professional distance between us. "Second floor, end of the east hall. The master suite is on the left. Go change out of your office clothes. We sign the papers in thirty minutes."

Without waiting for a response, he turned on his heel and strode toward his private study, his long strides radiating absolute control.

I took a deep, shaky breath, balling my hands into fists to stop them from trembling. One year, I reminded myself. Just survive one year, clear Dad's name, keep Lily safe, and get out.

I walked up the grand staircase, my heels clicking against the marble. The east hall was quiet, carpeted in deep crimson runners that muffled every sound. I reached the massive mahogany doors at the end of the corridor, pushed them open, and stepped into the primary suite.

It was sprawling. A massive king-sized bed with dark grey silk linens dominated the center of the room, positioned across from a roaring stone fireplace. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic view of the dark estate grounds—and the thick, black woods beyond.

I walked over to the glass, looking out into the darkness. My stomach churned as I remembered the text message. Make sure you look out the window tonight.

Suddenly, a tiny click echoed behind me.

I whipped around, my pulse spiking. "Who's there?"

Max’s dark head popped out from behind the heavy velvet curtains near the balcony door, holding a shiny red plastic toy key. Beside him, Lily was sitting on the rug, clutching a stuffed bear and giggling into her hands.

"Max?" I breathed out a sigh of relief, dropping to my knees. "What are you two doing in here? You're supposed to be downstairs with Mrs. Gable."

"We had an emergency mission!" Max whispered conspiratorially, scurrying over to me on his knees. He held up the red plastic key with absolute seriousness. "I locked the balcony doors from the inside so the bad men can't get in. And I fixed the bedroom door locks!"

I frowned, looking past him toward the entrance of the suite. "What do you mean, fixed the locks?"

"I put superglue and toy blocks in the keyhole!" Max declared proudly, puffing out his small chest. "Now Daddy can't lock you in a different room, and you have to sleep in the big bed together so you can protect each other from monsters!"

My eyes widened in absolute sheer horror. "Max! You did what?"

Before I could scramble to my feet to check the door, the heavy mahogany entrance of the master suite swung inward. Alexander walked into the room, holding a thick leather folder containing our marriage contract.

"Chloe, the attorneys need your signature on page fifteen—" Alexander stopped mid-sentence as the door clicked firmly shut behind him.

CLICK.

A strange, metallic snap echoed through the heavy doorframe, followed by the distinct sound of a internal security bolt dropping into place.

Alexander glanced at the door, then slowly lowered his gaze to his son, his eyes narrowing. "Max. What did you touch?"

"Nothing!" Max yelled triumphantly, grabbing Lily’s hand. "Mission complete! Goodnight Daddy! Goodnight Mommy!"

Before either of us could react, the two toddlers darted through the small connecting door that led directly into Max's adjacent playroom, slamming their little side door shut and clicking their own child-proof latch from the inside.

Alexander took two long strides toward the primary suite's main entrance and grabbed the heavy brass handle. He yanked it.

It didn't budge.

He twisted the keyhole lock—or tried to. The mechanism was completely jammed with multicolored plastic toy blocks and hardened craft glue.

"Max Sterling," Alexander growled, his voice low and thunderous as he rattled the handle again. The heavy reinforced door remained completely immovable.

"Is it... really locked?" I asked, my voice squeaking slightly as panic flared in my chest.

Alexander turned around slowly, his chest expanding with a heavy, dangerous exhale. He set the leather folder down on the dresser, unbuttoning his collar button and loosening his black silk tie with a slow, deliberate tug.

"My son has managed to trigger the estate’s automated panic-room protocol on this door," Alexander said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "The electronic override requires a master keycard from the security hub downstairs. Which means..."

He looked up, his piercing blue eyes locking onto mine in the dim, amber firelight of the bedroom.

"Which means we are locked in this room together until morning."

A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the suite. The fire crackled in the hearth, casting long, dancing shadows across the massive king-sized bed.

"You can call security on your phone," I blurted out, taking a step backward until my lower back bumped against the edge of the mahogany dresser.

"The panic protocol cuts off all external signal transmissions to this room to prevent remote hacking," Alexander murmured, taking a slow step toward me. "No calls out. No signal in. Just you, me, and a marriage contract."

My heart pounded violently against my ribs as Alexander continued to close the distance between us. He stopped mere inches away, his towering frame blocking out the warmth of the fire, casting me entirely in his shadow. The raw, unfiltered tension between us snapped like a high-tension wire.

"What are you doing, Alexander?" I whispered, my breath catching in my throat as he reached out.

His warm, long fingers brushed a strand of hair behind my ear, his knuckles lightly grazing the sensitive skin of my neck. A shudder rippled down my spine.

"Signing our contract, Mrs. Sterling," he rasped, his eyes dropping to my lips. "Unless you're afraid to be alone in the dark with me."

Before I could answer, every single light in the bedroom flickered violently—and died.

The room was instantly plunged into near-total darkness, lit only by the dying embers of the fireplace.

And from the balcony directly outside our high-floor window, came the sharp, distinct sound of heavy glass shattering.
