Chapter 431

Author: Eli Sole
“A misunderstanding?”

Maggie blinked in surprise, her hand pausing mid-air as she poured flour into the mixing bowl. She lifted her gaze toward Layla. “You mean... they misunderstood your relationship with William?”

Layla nodded, calm and straightforward. “Yeah.”

Maggie stared at her, momentarily at a loss for words.

Did that mean Layla didn’t feel the same way? Had this whole thing been one-sided from the start? Just William chasing after her on his own?

That was completely beyond what Maggie had expected.

Realizing Maggie had gone quiet, Layla asked, curious, “Is something wrong?”

“No, no...” Maggie quickly shook her head and returned to her task, adding more flour into the bowl.

Maggie had survived this long in the Lucas family because she never asked too m

William met Layla’s gaze. “Did you forget this was done by a group?”Layla snapped back to attention. “You’re right. Shane wasn’t the only one! He even said it himself—Carly was sent to him as a gift!”And the person who arranged that gift was the vilest of them all.“Mm.”William glanced back toward the Lucas estate, his expression unreadable. “Whoever’s behind this isn’t finished.”Following his gaze, a chill crept over Layla. Her gut told her the person pulling the strings hadn’t been trying to please Shane at all.“This time, don’t take matters into your own hands again.”William’s low voice cut through her thoughts, pulling her back to the present. She instantly felt guilty and gave him a sheepish smile. “I just wanted to investigate first and report back to you later. I didn’t expect everything to go so smoothly…”“Was it Chris who told you?” William asked suddenly.Layla blinked. “How did you know?”“When we went to grab Shane from the Xander estate, Chris didn’t ask

“No!”Shane quickly raised his voice. “I swear, I didn’t! I really didn’t! I love Carly! I’d never force myself on her without her consent!“This whole thing was a misunderstanding. My friend told me he was sending me a gift. I had no idea Carly was the one! That night I was drunk. I just couldn’t help myself.“We’re all men here. You should understand. The fact that I stopped myself in the end. Doesn’t that prove how much I love her?”“Shut up!”Layla couldn’t take it anymore. She lashed out and kicked him hard.Shane let out a pained howl, curling up on the floor.“You’re an insult to the word ‘love’!” Layla’s voice shook with rage. “If you really loved her, you wouldn’t have laid a single finger on her!“Carly never wanted you. She rejected you again and again. Wasn’t that clear enough? Did you really have to corner her until she had nowhere left to run?“You call that love? It’s nothing but your sick, obsessive need to control her!”Suddenly, a choked voice came from the

At those words, everyone’s gaze immediately shifted back to Layla.Scarlett, holding the softly weeping Camila in her arms, looked at Layla with a hint of admiration.“How could such a small, delicate-looking woman command such presence?” she wondered.Facing the entire Lucas family alone, and yet Layla remained so calm and composed.Scarlett had only ever seen this kind of composure in William. But Layla was different. As a woman, she had even more guts.Just then, the sound of movement came from downstairs.Layla stepped forward. “Come on. They’re here.”As Layla started toward the stairs, Zion was the first to follow.Lucien clenched his fists, his expression darkening. “That damn man always caused me trouble. Why hadn’t anyone told me Carly had seen Shane’s face? How am I supposed to protect him now?” he wondered. If he had known, he never would have agreed to this. But there was no turning back now. He would have to take it one step at a time.Resolving himself, Lucie

“How I know doesn’t matter. What matters now is that you can’t think like this.”“And how should I think?”Suddenly, Carly shot to her feet, her emotions surging. “Something happened to me, and all they care about is how ashamed I’ve made this family!“Am I the one at fault? I’m the victim here! The one who should be ashamed is Shane, that bastard! Not me!“Did you see the extra security all over the house? They’re afraid I’ll run off! Afraid I’ll make this public! Afraid I’ll taint the Lucas family name!“Am I really so filthy?”Tears streamed down her face. Even her voice trembled uncontrollably as she cried out.Her raw grief and pain hit Layla square in the heart. For a moment, she couldn’t speak. All she could do was step forward and gently pull the broken girl into her arms.“Carly… you’re not filthy.”Fighting back her own tears, Layla whispered, “The one who’s filthy is Shane. He deserves to die for what he’s done. I’ll stand with you. We’ll go after him together. Some

There wasn’t a trace of light in Carly’s eyes. They were empty, like a barren wasteland stripped of life.Layla’s heart clenched. Her hatred for Shane grew even stronger.Quietly, she balled her fists. She wanted to say something, but no words would come. The two of them sat in heavy silence. It was Carly who finally broke it. “Did you come here to pity me?”Her voice was hoarse, like it hadn’t been used in days, muffled and raw.Layla quickly shook her head. “No, no... that’s not why I’m here.”“I left the studio without a second thought. I said such awful things to you. I won’t lie—I really was hoping the studio would fail.“But… in the end, it was me who was proven wrong.“Layla, I’ll admit it—you really are incredible. You deserved my admiration. You never let me down. I’m the one who let you down.”Carly spoke as if to herself, the words having sat buried in her heart long before any of this happened.Carter had tried to persuade her many times. He told her to let go of

For a long time, there was no response from inside the room.Scarlett frowned and turned to Layla. “It looks like Carly doesn’t want to see us.”“Let me try.”Layla stepped forward and knocked softly. “Carly, will you let me see you? You know it’s not easy for me to get inside the Lucas estate. If I miss this chance, I may not get another.“I don’t want to leave without seeing you. If you’re still unsure, I can wait. I’ll wait until you’re ready to open the door.”Just then, Zion and Camila came rushing over. The moment Zion saw Layla, his expression turned dark.“What are you doing here?” he demanded angrily. He strode forward and reached out to shove Layla aside, but Scarlett quickly stepped in front of her. “I brought her here. What do you think you’re doing?”Zion looked stunned. “You… you brought her? Since when does she have any right to interfere in Lucas family matters?”“She just wants to talk to Carly. She’s trying to help her! And here you are, attacking someone wit
