A Short-lived Dream

“Why are you lying to her, Nereus,” Arethusa breathed the words out.

Nereus glared at her, daring her to go on, threatening her silently. But he already knew exactly how stubborn of a creature Arethusa was, he knew that when she puts something in her mind she would not stop until she accomplished it.

It was something that he admired in her once upon a time, it was a time that eternity folded, a time that he almost did not recall.

He never considered Arethusa an enemy. She had always been a friend. He knew how deeply she cared about Amalthea and for him, that forgave her many flaws. He was forever in the debt of Arethusa. She was the one who brought his Amal into the immortal world and subsequently into his life. He could not possibly ignore that Arethusa was his life partner’s own mother and for that, he never shunned her away.

When every single living creature in the sea neglected or blamed Arethusa, Nereus was neutral towards her.
