Sage's POV

The clatter of plates felt impossibly loud in the otherwise hushed dining room. Each step I took toward the table was a battle and a forced march against the tide of humiliation that threatened to drag me under. My fingers trembled as I set the heavy platter down, the aroma of sizzling steak and roasted vegetables doing little to calm my churning stomach. I plastered a smile on my face. It was a bright and empty gesture that felt more like a grimace.

Just get through this, Sage. Just get through this.

Rina was engrossed in conversation with one of her impeccably dressed friends with her back to me. A small mercy, for which I was disproportionately grateful.

Her oblivious presence was a shield, allowing me to focus on the simple yet monumental task of serving their meal without drawing attention to myself. My head remained bowed as I meticulously poured the deep crimson wine, the liquid glinting under the soft restaurant lights. They were clearly on a double date, their la

Sage's POV "This way, Sage, to the backroom, please." Ms. River's voice that was usually a calming balm, now held an unfamiliar sharpness. I mechanically followed her, Andrew's earlier command still echoing in my ears. Go to the backroom. Just like that. The sheer normalcy of it and the way Ms. River had simply obeyed, sent a shiver down my spine. It was as if a silent understanding passed between them like a secret language I wasn't privy to. My mind was a whirlwind of unanswered questions, a chaotic storm of "what ifs" and "why nows."The backroom was a cramped space, smelling faintly of stale coffee and industrial cleaner. Ms. River turned to me with her eyes which were once soft with understanding, now glinting with a steely resolve. "Alright, Sage," she began, her voice low, "I need you to explain everything. From the very beginning. And I mean everything. Why did you make a mistake with the customer's food?"My throat tightened. A mistake? My mind screamed. A mistake?! I wanted

Sage's POV The air around the table seemed to chill. The expressions on their faces morphed from curious to openly hostile. Their eyes, now narrowed slits, burned into me.“No wonder she looked familiar,” Teresa interjected, a smug smirk spreading across her face. “She’s the falling star.” A ripple of laughter, cruel and cutting, swept through the group.“She can’t even serve in a restaurant,” Teresa continued, her voice dripping with disdain. “No wonder she was so bad at basketball.” More laughter, louder this time, a cacophony of mockery that threatened to overwhelm me.My cheeks flushed crimson, the heat of shame and indignation rising within me. Breathe, Sage. Just breathe. I forced my eyes to focus on the plate, a desperate anchor in the stormy sea of their taunts. Instead of replying, instead of giving them the reaction they craved, I offered another strained apology. “I am truly sorry. I’ll just… I’ll take this back.”I reached for the plate again, my hand still shaking. But T

Sage's pov“Oh, wow! Is he serious right now?” I thought, my heart doing a little flutter-kick in my chest. Kay, the hotshot basketball star, the guy every girl in school practically swooned over—just told me he liked me. The girl who usually blends into the background. My mind reeled. He wanted to be my boyfriend? I almost snorted. Boyfriend. The word felt foreign, especially coming from him.A part of me, the part that was still reeling from the Andrew-shaped hole in my heart, wanted to laugh. Boyfriend? When I was neck-deep in a complicated, secret, and probably doomed entanglement with Andrew? Andrew, who was a literal walking, talking secret, a man whose very existence in my life was a ticking time bomb. Pauline was already a constant looming shadow, ready to expose our hidden world. The thought of Pauline discovering us made my stomach clench. Our relationship, if you could even call it that, was a fragile thing built on hushed whispers and stolen moments. It was a beautiful, he

Sage's POV The warm, golden glow of the living room, which was usually a comforting embrace, felt like a spotlight pinning me to the plush sofa. All eyes it seemed had swiveled in unison, landing squarely on me. Expectations hung thick in the air, a palpable weight that made my chest feel tight. Even Beth, bless her enthusiastic little heart, was giving me the go-ahead, her bright eyes wide with anticipation, a silent signal urging me forward. I desperately flashed my gaze to Kay and a silent plea for rescue, for him to swoop in and unravel this burgeoning misunderstanding. But he just stood there, an almost imperceptible smirk playing on his lips, leaving me to my own devices. It was Beth, thankfully, who broke the silence, her voice surprisingly gentle for someone usually so boisterous. "It wouldn't be bad," she began, a hopeful lilt to her words, "if you admitted you were my uncle's girlfriend. You don't have to be sad about it, Sage."Sad? My eyebrows shot up. This whole situati

Sage's POV The shrill of my phone jolted me, a jarring invasion into the quiet hum of my self-imposed exile. I stared at the caller ID, the name "Mother Dearest" , a cruel joke that often felt more like a curse. Hesitantly, I picked up, the familiar tension already coiling in my gut.“Sage, how are you?” Her voice, thin and reedy even through the phone, offered no real warmth. It was a perfunctory question, a formality she felt obliged to ask.“I’m fine, Mother,” I replied, the words feeling dry in my mouth. “I’ve actually been trying to reach you for weeks.” A subtle accusation, perhaps but one that would undoubtedly fall on deaf ears.“Oh, I’ve been busy, darling.” Busy and always busy. Busy enough to forget her daughter existed, busy enough to delegate my upbringing to a revolving door of nannies, busy enough to prioritize her social calendar over any semblance of maternal duty. I bit back the retort, the familiar sting of neglect a dull ache in my chest. I’d learned long ago that
