Bella

There was no yelling because the quieter he got, the more everything shook.

He called me into the study the next morning with nothing more than my name spoken once from the doorway. No raised voice. No explanation. Just the single word and the expectation that I would follow. I did. The room was already stripped of pretense. The curtains were half-drawn, desk cleared except for a single photograph lying face-up in the center.

The day I walked through those glass doors alone.

He said nothing. He simply stood on the other side of the desk and waited.

I understood the shape of the silence. The choice to speak was being offered to me, but the choice about whether I spoke had already been made by circumstance. The photograph had done that work. My hands found the edge of the desk and held on.

“I’m pregnant.”

The words left my mouth without the apology I had rehearsed in the dark. I did not soften them. I did not look away.

“I kept it from you because of the contract. The clause that lets you end this arrangement if my circumstances change in ways that affect the image or the household. I was afraid you would decide I was no longer useful before I had anywhere steady to stand. The power sits with you. I knew that. I still know it.” My voice stayed level even while my fingers trembled against the wood. “I didn’t hide it out of cruelty. I hid it because I was trying to survive the terms I signed.”

Alex listened without interruption. When I finished he asked only one question.

“Is it mine?”

The words cut both ways. They assumed I might have been with other people. They also meant he was not ruling himself out. I gave him the timeline; the dates, the single window that mattered. He did the math in silence. Something complex and private moved across his face, too fast to name.

He turned away and walked to the window. The city lay beyond the glass, ordinary and indifferent. The silence that followed felt long enough for the entire building to hold its breath with us. I stayed where I was, hands still braced on the desk, waiting for the version of this conversation I had prepared myself for. He would have given me a cold dismissal, the clean legal cut, the quiet instruction to pack.

Instead he spoke without turning.

“The contract changes.”

I braced.

He faced me. “You stay. We renegotiated. Whatever you need for the child, it’s provided. No conditions attached to that.”

It was not what I had expected. Cruelty would have been simpler. This unsettled me more. The ground under my feet shifted without the courtesy of a warning.

“Why?” The question came out thinner than I wanted. “What’s in it for you?”

He looked at me then, he really looked. It was the first time without the usual careful distance. The honesty in it was almost harder to bear than the silence had been.

“I don’t know yet.”

That was all I had to do. I didn't have to pretend or act up. I didn't need to be strategic. He acted like there was still something left between us.

I left the study with the photograph still on the desk and the weight of his answer following me down the hall. The rest of the day passed in a kind of suspended quiet. I moved through the rooms of the suite without settling in any of them. The words no conditions kept turning over in my mind, too clean to trust and too generous to dismiss.

That evening I found the document slid under the door.

I picked it up carefully, as if it might change its mind. Inside was a revised contract in a thicker paper, new terms. I paged through it standing in the middle of the sitting room. Every clause that had once protected only him had been adjusted. Support for the child was unconditional. The termination language that had hung over me like a blade was gone entirely. At the bottom Alex had already signed. At the bottom of the contract was the witness line waiting blank for my name.

It was tucked between the final pages like a bookmark was the ultrasound photograph I had hidden in the lining of my suitcase. The one I had been certain no one else would ever see. He had found it. He had kept it safe. He had returned it.

I sat down on the edge of the sofa with the papers in my lap and the small black-and-white image resting on top of them. My hands shook and my eyes continued scanning every part of the room. The luxury that I craved all my life while being with my father and I could never get.

The room was dead silent so I could hear my heart beat so quietly. Outside the windows the city continued as if nothing had shifted. Inside, everything had.

I never expected him to act the way he acted. I sat there thinking so hard. Could it have been Valerie who fueled him to it? That was not even possible because she had no idea that the reason I was here was because of the pregnancy. She had no idea that I gave away our friendship because of what was growing inside of me.

Sadness gripped me so hard that tears fell from eyes.

I turned the ultrasound over in my hands once, then laid it carefully on the table beside the unsigned line that still waited for me.

Bella He appeared at the edge of the charity luncheon like an afterthought. The type someone must have planned quietly and very carefully. I had learned that by then nothing in Alex Blackwood’s mansion was an accident. Nothing was an accident. Everything was quietly planned and looked at. After all the chaos, I was here properly dressed in the most luxurious gowns and jewelry from his brand and going solo at a women's in business luncheon. He made me a Blackwood Foundation representative. It was awkward that I wasn't here with him. He would have buried his eyes on me. He would have wanted to watch my every move. Tonight was totally…totally different. I was as free as a bird. No one was going to control where I was going and what I had to do. I could freely engage with anyone without feeling any sort of remorse. I wouldn't have to feel indebted at any point. It was such a glorious feeling, with no perfect description. Everyone sat on the Champaign table. I lingered with my thou

  • The Contract Wife    The Price of Loyalty

Bella I could barely hear what Alex and Ethan said to each other in the study. But I heard the door. And a door can tell you everything a conversation hides. He walked in and stylishly pulled Ethan away from the garden. He held on to him till they got to the study. By this time, I had already got up to the kitchen. I was busy rinsing a glass that I didn't need to. I stayed there for a long time staring at the entrance of the door. They stayed longer than I expected them to. I mean nothing was going to happen, they have been friends for years. There was going to be absolutely nothing different behind the closed doors. Although it stretched longer than it should have, I wasn't ready to leave. I stayed there and counted the silence as I looked at the door. When the door opened again, I was still at the sink. Ethan came out first with a dazed look that had me questioning myself and what happened. His smile was uneasy. A slightly crooked one he always wore, but something behind it had

  • The Contract Wife    The Wrong Confession.

Bella In this little life of mine, there were people who made me feel safe enough to say the things I shouldn't—Ethan was one of those people. For me, that was the first warning I ignored. His presence in the mansion was surreal and uncomfortable at first. He mostly came around when Ahex decided to work from his office at home. It wasn't intentional to see him drop by. I was innocently seated in the garden while rebranding my event planning company and working on a small event contract. It was my first contract after I got married. It was a moment to get reminded of the things I've always loved doing before my life took a big spin. He took quick steps into the mansion building and this was me sitting outside the garden. I buried my face quickly when I saw him and after some seconds I began to question why I did that. I acted like a little girl had just seen her crush after a long time. “Are you hiding?" He called me out and sat across from me, joining me without any form of in

  • The Contract Wife    The Architect's Flaw

AlexanderI had built my life the way I built my business: systematically, without sentiment, with every variable accounted for. Bella Anderson was a variable I had dramatically miscalculated.I didn't see it coming. It was so hard to find all my hard work in ruins. She was my only solution. I had to put things together to make sure I saved my reputation. At midnight, my thoughts raced drastically without any end. I was uptight about having her around, and yet she had an irreplaceable value to being my wife. She was virtuous; this alone made my business partners see me differently. A man of respect and a man of his word. They always whispered, “Just look at his beautiful wife." It was always a proud moment for me. I was pleased and happy each time I heard comments like that or anything similar. Across my desk was a window which showed Bella's window too. I was taken aback when I saw her light was on across the corridor. I grabbed my pen and forced my head down. I tried to focus

  • The Contract Wife    Diamonds and Deception

Bella I felt the cool weight of the diamonds as they pressed against my skin. In the mirror, his eyes met mine as he fastened the necklace himself. “I need you to smile like you mean it tonight." I immediately curved my lips the way I have been practicing and held it there. It was the Blackwood's Foundation Annual Gala and every corner was filled with people in the grand ballroom of the Metropolitan Club in New York. It looked like a live constellation.I stepped out of the car with my arms in his arms. The diamonds were still getting warmed on my skin. He remained close to me and the first camera flash went off before we even reached the steps. "Mrs. Blackwood,” someone gasped in surprise, and the band slid over me like a second skin. This time around, Alex's hand was still on the lower side of my back. It was like a mark of gentle territory. Every single person who came close enough acknowledged both of us. I moved through the room just like I usually did on the other nights
