Bella

“Aren’t you ashamed? You don’t even care about the fact that I’m her best friend!” I wailed angrily. Deep down, all I need was a better route to escape my problems.

The offer was indeed golden, but why did it have to come from him? Why did he have to be the one to ask for such a delusional favor?

“Are you actually going to give me an answer? Or you’re going to go back with all the baggage of problems waiting for you back at the home you might probably sell?” Alex replied. I was stunned.

For a man who has such wealth,I should never have been shocked to know he did a background check on me.

“This is hard…” I muttered to myself while holding my abdomen.

My unborn child…

I was not only trying to pay the loans by being his contract wife, but I was about to give my unborn child a future. I was standing on the edge of a lot, and it was indeed a heavy one for me.

“Bella… I need to cover up for myself. I need to save my reputation. You have to pay those loans…” he sounded so true to himself and in as much as it was hard to accept it ,that was the truth.

Tears clouded my sight as I scanned the entire mansion again, “…and the unborn child?” I had to ask him. I wanted him to know that it was his child.

“You can’t be serious, right now? Are you going to marry me or not?” He shouted; goosebumps raided my skin.

“Yes! Yes, yes! Alex Blackwood. I’m going to marry you. I’m going to be your contract wife!” I cried out, trembling.

He rushed to the get the ring. The same ring my best friend wore, the same one that made me so happy for her, he passed the same engagement through my middle finger.

“I’ll send you the papers. They have to be discreet. The marriage will be the day after tomorrow. I'm only giving you time to process who the father of the child is,” he coldly uttered as he picked up his suit and stepped out of the mansion.

I was stunned, shocked in fact. I didn’t know how it happened, but it did. I didn’t know how to express how confused I was, yet over the moon.

I decided to get a ride back home. In my head, I was still going to figure things out. The weight of the ring on my finger made it harder for me to move my hands around.

When I got back home, I was slammed by my father’s portrait, which is kept in the sitting room, directly facing the entrance.

“Dearest Father!” I uttered in tears and I had no idea what to say next.

“Rest in peace!” I uttered, and I moved to turn on the light switch. When I did, I was numb.

“Valerie?” I muttered, staring at her while quietly removing the engagement ring from my hand. I slipped it into my bag.

“I waited for you long enough and I don’t know where you went to…” she uttered with a cracked voice as she cried for hours.

“I’m sorry.” I couldn’t think of another response. I was sorry because I was doing everything in the right way possible even when it was wrong.

“You don’t have to. I mean, you’re losing a lot. You’re losing a gig that came as hope to all the problems you have,” she responded softly as tears ran down her cheek.

I immediately buried my face to the ground. I was reminded that I had problems. I mean, everyone had some.

However, mine made me a living corpse. I was running crazy because I didn’t want to lose the only thing my father left for me. It was the only memory I had left.

“Why are you giving up on him?” I asked subtly.

I wanted to give it another shot before she boldly found out about the bitter truth.

“Ama, are you seriously asking that question? He cheated? It’s everywhere. He didn’t only do it one one lady,” she started crying again.

“Not only one person?” I uttered with so much doubt in me.

“Great! You are not even updated, Ama. It is all over the news. It is everywhere. I feel so worthless. I feel like I amounted to nothing with him. He didn’t respect me,” she managed to spill everything out while crying.

“I’m sorry, Valerie. I don’t think I can blame you for any decision you make. I think you have to look into things a bit more. You were so happy with him, why would one truth rip you apart?” I asked, trying my best to open a room of consideration.

Meanwhile, Mr. Blackwood has a new fiancée, and she has no idea about it.

“I don’t even know, Ama. I don’t want to think about it. I’m losing my mind. I don’t think I can face him,” she responded, stretching her hand to reach the wipes on the table.

“Alex doesn’t look bad. It must be done sort of coincidence…” I tried again, losing my faith this time. I could still run back and return the ring.

“Scandalous crimes make me sick. I don’t want that, and I won’t bother looking into it. He can do whatever he wants to do it is his business,” she uttered nonchalantly. My faith was finished.

“Vale…” I wanted to call her out, but I was briefly interrupted by the buzz sound from my phone. After that, it continued, like it was not going to stop.

“Valerie!” I wailed finally after checking my phone. There was no hope for me anymore. I thought I would have a solution asides having to marry Alex, but after seeing all the messages on my phone, I was destroyed within.

“What’s going on again?” She responded coldly.

I shook vigorously falling my phone to the ground. I didn’t know what to do anymore.

“All my accounts have been blocked, including the event-planning business,” I cried, and goosebumps raided my entire body.

“What? That should have happened earlier. You are owing so many loans. "You were lucky from the start,” She ignored me.

“I can’t even help you at this point, I’m mourning my loss. I feel you should find something else doing,” she added.

I knew I was alone at that point.

“Is that all you’re going to say after realizing you put her out there and now everything has been seized?” I angrily pulled out.

“I don’t care about absolutely anything that has to do with Alex, Ama.” She uttered, and grabbed her bag to leave.

“Valerie?” I called out with the last strength I had.

“Don’t turn your back on me now. I need you at least. We could figure out something,” I pleaded.

Valerie slammed the entrance door before I could say another word. There and then, I realized it was just be and my unborn baby against the world. Valerie only cared about herself.

I stared at my bag where I threw the engagement ring for a couple of minutes before wiping my tears. When I was about taking my bag to get the ring back to its rightful

place, I heard the door bell.

  • The Contract Wife    The Bracelet and the lie between them

BellaThe Bracelet sat on the desk between us like a confession neither of us was brave enough to finish. The doctor checked me up and recommended that I avoid stress at all costs. I literally fainted. I backed out without any warning. What was Lucas doing? The things he did were already enough. Later that evening, Alex finally summoned Lucas to the mansion. They spoke so casually, almost like they already knew themselves. “He's coming and I'm going to set things straight," he added after the call ended. “What's that going to do? As much as you don't want to believe what I'm telling you, I wonder what you're going to do when Lucas finally tells you the truth." I understood. Alex picked it up the way a man might lift something that could still burn. His fingers closed around the thin metal with a care I had never seen from him. It was not with documents, not with glasses, not even with me. He turned it over once, twice, watching the light catch the small engraved edge. The roo

  • The Contract Wife    No Rules, No Game!

BellaI wanted to be so lackadaisable about what was going on, but my baby kicked. I wanted to give him a hard slap on his face for being so nonchalant all along. I wanted to push him away and warn him subtly to never treat me the way he always did. But the shadow never stopped coming closer—The one moment I was always looking out for was coming to an abrupt end. I didn't know what to do about it. “Sir! Mr. Blackwood! I'm so sorry to interrupt, but there's a man at the entrance of the gate. He demands to see you urgently," the security man panted. It was obvious he was running, big when he got up here and saw us, he gave us a bit of time. "Why have you decided to come now?” Alex rudely retorted. It almost felt like he was enjoying the moment as well. He acted off like, you have always had me in your mansion. Why are you deliberate on acting differently tonight?Because I saved his reputation?I moved away and stared at the security man as he walked out. Either way, I never sto

  • The Contract Wife    The Choice She Didn't Contract For

Bella This marriage was a business transaction. I didn't want to feel anything or plan to walk out of this chapter like it was something I badly wanted The four corners of the room had three different souls who knew exactly what they were doing. Alex, Valerie and myself carried the weight of the news in the air. It was so difficult to breathe because regardless of the fact that it concerned them, it was myself and Ethan in that photo. It wasn't any of them. We were the ones bearing the cross heavily. Silence sang out loud, so loud that I could hear my heart pound so deeply in my chest. My breaths went deeper as I tried to inhale, and the fake attention I was getting from Valerie—Nothing made sense. Was it all planned?“Are we just going to remain quiet?" Alex broke the silence. “What do you even mean? I have been waiting for Bella to say something…" Valerie cut in. Truly, she didn't change. Her opinion wasn't needed and it would have been better if she didn't say a word. I w

  • The Contract Wife    When Enemies Share a Table

Bella The worst betrayals in my life had always worn a familiar face. I should have been better at recognizing them by now.I got from my bed feeling a bit musty and moody, little did I know that there was a bomb right by my side. My phone kept beeping over and over. My heart raced as I overheard a loud noise on the door. It sounded like the person had been there for hours. I left my phone first and went on for who could be at the door. It felt like I had made the wrong decision, but there was no other way to clear off the air of fear.“Who took these pictures? What's all of this? How dare you want to ruin every single thing that I have toiled to build?” The rage I got from my dearest contract husband left me standing still in my night robes, big eye bags and a face of disgust for something I had no idea about. “Can you at least have a proper communication with me? You are shouting, you are raging and I'm not getting anything from you," I replied out of disgust. "You know it's

  • The Contract Wife    The Man Who Wasn't Invited

Bella He appeared at the edge of the charity luncheon like an afterthought. The type someone must have planned quietly and very carefully. I had learned that by then nothing in Alex Blackwood’s mansion was an accident. Nothing was an accident. Everything was quietly planned and looked at. After all the chaos, I was here properly dressed in the most luxurious gowns and jewelry from his brand and going solo at a women's in business luncheon. He made me a Blackwood Foundation representative. It was awkward that I wasn't here with him. He would have buried his eyes on me. He would have wanted to watch my every move. Tonight was totally…totally different. I was as free as a bird. No one was going to control where I was going and what I had to do. I could freely engage with anyone without feeling any sort of remorse. I wouldn't have to feel indebted at any point. It was such a glorious feeling, with no perfect description. Everyone sat on the Champaign table. I lingered with my thou

  • The Contract Wife    No More Rehearsals

BellaThere was no yelling because the quieter he got, the more everything shook. He called me into the study the next morning with nothing more than my name spoken once from the doorway. No raised voice. No explanation. Just the single word and the expectation that I would follow. I did. The room was already stripped of pretense. The curtains were half-drawn, desk cleared except for a single photograph lying face-up in the center. The day I walked through those glass doors alone. He said nothing. He simply stood on the other side of the desk and waited.I understood the shape of the silence. The choice to speak was being offered to me, but the choice about whether I spoke had already been made by circumstance. The photograph had done that work. My hands found the edge of the desk and held on.“I’m pregnant.”The words left my mouth without the apology I had rehearsed in the dark. I did not soften them. I did not look away.“I kept it from you because of the contract. The clause that

Bella“You are going to be my event planner!” She exclaimed, and I felt my heart fall into my stomach. • The Contract Wife    Chaos and Composure

Bella“Are you okay, ma’am?” I opened my eyes to find the nurse by my side—I was back to reality.“Where's my father?” I asked cautiously.
