LOGINFilled with fury, I didn't wait to see his reaction, I ran, as fast as my legs could carry me. I didn't stop when the men outside raised their guns at me, or when Alpha Moretti held up a hand to stop them.
I collapsed on the grass under the full moon, grieving everything. My parents, my pack, my wolf, my mate’s rejection and the life I would have had as Luna.
Hatred burned through me as silent sobs racked my body, just before a searing pain tore from my head down to my toes.
My mind reeled with panic. Was this an aftereffect of the rejection? Was this what every wolf who got rejected felt? Was the alpha feeling the same pain as I was? Before I could ask myself more questions, a piercing pain shot through my back.
I let out a loud scream, then darkness followed.
——
Rain pattered against my skin... jolting me awake
Something was odd.. It never rained out of season but that wasn’t the worse. The real jolt came when I looked down and realized my clothes were gone.
I was butt naked on the grass.
I held a hand to my mouth. Did someone take advantage of my state?
I peeked between my thighs to see nothing. Surely, if anyone had touched me, the pain would be enough evidence to show.
I didn't have any more time to think as I found my black hoodie sprawled some steps away from where I lay and I quickly put it on, shivering even more after getting drenched.
Thankfully, it was large enough to fall down my small frame up until my mid thigh.
I stayed in the shadows, found familiar roads and slipped into the house through the back door.
On my way to my room, I saw Grannie Alba curled up on the couch. The lines on her face appeared deeper than they were the last time I saw her. Sadness filled me as I realized she probably went mad with worry after I hadn't return home last night.
I wondered what I would say, if she tried questioning me.
The truth?
***Alessandro's POV***
After she disappeared, I called off the night’s meeting. My head wasn’t clear, and I couldn’t let my men see me like this.
When I was alone, I dropped my head in my hand.
How was this possible? She couldn’t have been a day over eighteen.
There had to be a mistake
“The moon goddess doesn't make mistakes,” Raka, my wolf, hissed at me.
He was right to be angry. We’d met and rejected our mate in the span of five minutes, and worse, he couldn’t even feel her wolf.
“Remember the prophecy was cle-”
“To hell with that ridiculous prophecy,” Raka snapped. “Go get our mate back. We're too old for this.”
“Exactly! We are.” I shot back. “And she's too weak, Raka. She wouldn't survive Moretti Brun,” I said plainly.
That shut him up.
“Penny for your thoughts?” Alessia asked, coming into view.
I was so engrossed in my thoughts I didn't realised she walked in. Normally, I would have heard her steps before she got to the door. Curse this.
“It's just….that girl was…”
“Your mate,” she finished. “And you rejected her.”
Alessia Romano was one of the few members of my clan; Umbra Nera and my pack, Moretti Brun, that had proven her loyalty to me which earned her the position as a Capo and a friend.
I gave a stiff nod in response.
“Whatever your reasons were, I'm sure they were valid,” she said.
“Have our meeting rescheduled for tomorrow, at a different location.”
“I don't know who that girl could be talking to,” I said stiffly.
Alessia gave me a stern look and left.
I convinced myself that I did the right thing by rejecting Elara. The prophecy was clear and she was not in any way a part of it.
I was only protecting my pack.
Three weeks had passed since the rejection, and I still had my hands full.
A sharp knock broke my focus, no one disturbed me at this hour. Moments later, Silas’ voice pushed through the mind link.
“What?” I asked, granting him access.
“I'm sorry but it's urgent. I wouldn't disturb you if it weren't, especially knowing that you just got back.”
I sighed, severing the mind link.
“Come in!” I called out, and he stepped into my office.
I was almost taken aback by how disheveled he looked. “Is everything okay? Maria?” I asked.
“Maria is fine… but the pack isn’t”
“Sit,” I gestured to the chair in front of me.
“Alpha,” he hesitated. “I think the land has been cursed.”
I almost laughed. “That’s impossible. We have one of the most powerful seers alive.” My tone was smug, unapologetically so.
I’d clawed this pack into power from nothing. I had every right to be confident.
But Silas didn’t flinch. Didn’t argue. He just shook his head and let out a long breath.
“This is real, Sandro. Something’s happening.”
I leaned back in my chair. “Alright. I’m listening.”
“It started over two weeks ago,” he said slowly. “The night it rained heavily,”
“Right.”
“After that day, our crops began to die. Even the already harvested food began to rot.”
I thought about his words for a moment. “Okay, it could just be that the rain disrupted the planting season. It never rains in February,”
Silas frowned.
“We all thought the same, until the soldiers at the borders reported that the greenery outside the territory looked lusher than ever. The plants were budding and fruiting, and flowers were blooming.”
“That’s not all,” he continued.
“A few of the soldiers went around to inspect other areas before bringing in this report. As we speak, every one of them is terribly ill, two of them died this morning.”
That made me sit up.
“My soldiers? Ill? That’s impossible. Moretti Brun members do not fall ill, much less die from… from illness.”
Leaving no room for a reply. He continued. “A pregnant she-wolf lost her pup today, and another is currently in the clinic while Dr. Enzo’s fighting to keep them both alive. Sandro, we can’t afford to sit quietly.”
“The council has gotten the news. You may be summoned any time,” he finished, sinking into his chair.
Before I could respond, my cousin Sofia burst in through the doors, slamming them shut.
“Sandro!” she called sharply.
I gave her a warning look, but she ignored it.
“You found your mate and rejected her?” she screeched. “I can’t believe you, Sandro. After all these years?”
From the corner of my eye, I saw Silas perk up in his chair. But I ignored him.
“How did you hear about that? Who have you been talking to?”
She ignored my questions and shook her head furiously.
Just then, my delta, Dante, entered the office.
“The council... they’re here.”
The ground beneath our feet trembled.“What's happening?” Trevor called out, as we struggled to keep our balance. All except Sandro who stood still, glaring in Malachi's direction. The stone floor began to rise, moving as one solid piece and lifting us upward like we were on an elevator. The chained wolves screamed louder as they rose with us.Sandro grabbed my arm to steady me as the chamber ascended with speed.Above us, the rocky ceiling split open with a sound like the world tearing apart. Blood red moonlight poured through the widening crack and we burst into the open air.I stared in disbelief. We were no longer underground. The chamber had risen to become a massive stone platform elevated high above the temple ruins. Around us stretched an open space I'd never seen before. It looked like a circular arena carved from ancient rock, surrounded by pillars that reached up toward the blood moon.“What is this place?” Alessia breathed.“The original temple,” Father Matteo whispered in
Trevor caught her, lowering her gently to the ground.“She's fine,” Trevor confirmed, checking her pulse. “But she'll be out for a while.”“We can't take her with us,” Lady Thalia said, her voice hard but not exactly unkind. “She's a liability as long as she's under his control.”“I can't just leave her!” Sandro's refusal and disgust in her statement was evident.Lady Thalia was right but I understood how he must feel.“You have to.” I grabbed his arm, forcing him to look at me. “She fought so hard through mind control to warn us. Don't let that sacrifice be for nothing.”He looked down at Sofia's unconscious form, then at the temple entrance where red light pulsed and chanting echoed. The dead bodies of the hooded figures scattered around the ground.“You,” he called to one of the warriors. “Stay with her. Keep her safe. Restrain her if you need to buy gently. Just don't allow her to follow us.”The warrior nodded, pulling Sofia's body into his arms so he could move her.Sandro turne
Sandro staggered back as if he'd been struck by lightning. I felt the exact same way too.“What are you talking about? This isn't real. You're in the safe house. You're supposed to be–”“Protected?” Sofia tilted her head with that same mechanical movement. “I think she's being mind controlled,” Makayla said, watching with increasing anxiety and I nodded.Tearing my eyes away from Sofia, I spoke up. “Sandro, I think she's being mind controlled.”He turned to me and the look in his eyes made me stumble back. He was devastated. This was worse than Silas’ betrayal. He considered my words for a moment. “Fight it!” Sandro pleaded, taking a step towards her. “Sofia, I know you're in there. You're stronger than this. Fight the control!”For just a moment, something flickered in Sofia's glazed eyes but it was gone before I could even recognize it, replaced by cold emptiness.“There's nothing to fight,” she said. “I serve the Master now. As will you all, once the harvest is complete.”The oth
Makayla's paws slapped the ground hard as we rushed toward the Ancient Luna temple. Trees blurred past us and cold wind rushed through my fur.“I was worried. Why have you been so quiet?” I asked her, finally bringing myself to talk.“Something feels terribly wrong, Elara. I just haven't been able to figure out what,” she replied, her voice was filled with anxiety.Whatever she was feeling was right. But beyond that, something was wrong in the forest. Reality itself seemed to be shifting around us. Tree branches reached toward us like grasping fingers and we dodged out of the way. The path we'd been following suddenly veered left when I could have sworn it went straight. We had gone beyond Moretti Brun territory and towards unmarked territory where the ancient temple was. “The blood moon is affecting everything,” Lady Thalia called from her position beside Raka’s massive black form. She wasn't flying but she certainly wasn't walking either. “Reality is bending. Just keep your eyes an
“What's going on?” I asked, feeling panic rise to my chest again. I hated being in the dark. Whatever Malachi's plans were or how he planned to achieve them were completely unknown to us and it irked me.“He's gone. But where did he go?” “Alpha, behind you!” A warrior from the main battle field called out and we all whipped our heads towards Sandro. One of the dark creatures moved behind Sandro with such speed, none of us noticed it. Lady Thalia shot one hand out and a single streak of lightning struck out of her fingertips, sending the creature down into a pile of ash.We all stared at her, star struck at her speed and accuracy. Her action seemed to have dragged the attention of the other harvested souls. They turned, staggering towards the newly arrived Fae creatures with determination. “He used your magic and the blood moon to tear the veil,” Lady Thalia noted with a frown as she took in the scene before her. “We must contain the territory now and find a way to close that veil,”
Sandro slammed into the corpse and knocked it aside.“NO!” I screamed. “Don't hurt her! Sandro, please don't–”“Elara, this is not your grandmother and I have to stop her!” He pinned the thrashing corpse down with his body so he could reason with me. “She'll try to hurt you!”Golden light sparked from my hands as my magic crackled wildly around me. “I don't care!” I was sobbing now. “You know what she means to me. She's my grannie!”“Luna, you need to get out of the way,” Rose appeared beside me, her bow drawn.I spun to face her. “Don't you dare! Don't you dare shoot her, Rose!”“Elara, listen to me,” but I wasn't interested in what anyone had to say. The sound of the battle faded in the distance. “No! I won't let any of you–”Pain exploded in my side, cutting the rest of my statement.I gasped, looking down to see blackened fingernails buried deep in my flesh. My grandmother's corpse had broken free from Sandro's grip somehow, and had attacked me before anyone could stop her. The
