Elsie POV

The room was dark, lit only by the dying embers of the fire and the pale glow of the moon filtering through the curtains. Elsie sat on the edge of the bed, her back straight, her hands folded in her lap. She had not moved in hours. She had not spoken. She had simply stared at the wall, at the patterns in the stone, at the shadows that danced across the surface.

Zuri sat on the opposite side of the bed, her knees drawn to her chest, her dark eyes fixed on the floor. The silence between them was heavy, thick with words that neither of them knew how to say.

The festival was over. The ritual had ended. And everything had changed.

"So this is it," Zuri said, her voice barely above a whisper. "This is the end for us."

Elsie's heart clenched. She wanted to deny it. She wanted to reach across the bed and pull Zuri into her arms and tell her that nothing had changed, that they would find a way, that love was stronger than fate.

But she could not. Because something had changed. Everything had changed.

Elsie had believed in the Moon Goddess. She had trusted that the Goddess would see the love she carried in her heart, the love that had grown in secret over years of stolen glances and hidden touches. She had believed that the Goddess would honor that love, would bind her to Zuri as fated mates, would give them a way to be together without fear or shame.

But when the ritual began, when the moonlight grew bright and the magic swept through the courtyard, Elsie had felt nothing for Zuri.

The pull she had expected, the spark, the recognition, none of it came. She had stood in the circle, her heart open, her hopes high, and she had felt only emptiness.

And then she had felt him.

Malcom.

The connection had hit her like a wave, sudden and overwhelming, knocking the breath from her lungs. She had turned and found him staring at her from across the courtyard, his honey colored eyes wide with wonder, his hand reaching for her as if pulled by an invisible thread.

The Goddess had bound her to Malcom. The son of Alpha Soren. The fisherman who had been pursuing her for weeks, ignoring her refusals, her coldness, her indifference.

The Goddess had given her to him.

Elsie had fled the courtyard before anyone could see her face. She had locked herself in her room and sat in the darkness, waiting for the numbness to pass.

It had not passed. It had only grown heavier.

"Zuri," Elsie said, her voice cracking. "I do not know what to say."

Zuri lifted her head. Her eyes were red, her cheeks wet with tears. "There is nothing to say. The Goddess has spoken. You are his mate. Not mine."

"Fated mates or not, I can still reject him."

Zuri shook her head. "You know it is not that simple. The bond is powerful. It will pull you toward him. It will make you want him. It will make you forget..."

"I will never forget you." Elsie crossed the space between them and took Zuri's hands in hers. "Never. Do you hear me? Whatever happens, whatever the Goddess decides, you are the one I love. You are the one I chose."

Zuri looked down at their joined hands, her lip trembling. "But you did not choose me. The Goddess did not choose us. We have been living a lie."

"It is not a lie." Elsie's voice was fierce, desperate. "What I feel for you is real. What we have together is real. The Goddess may have bound me to Malcom, but she cannot control my heart."

Zuri pulled her hands free and stood, walking to the window. Her silhouette was small against the moonlight, fragile and alone.

"She is the Moon Goddess, Elsie. She can do anything."

Elsie rose and followed her, standing close enough to feel the warmth of her body, close enough to breathe in the scent of her hair. She wanted to wrap her arms around Zuri, to hold her and never let go. But she was afraid. Afraid that if she touched her, she would break.

"We will find a way," Elsie said. "There must be a way."

Zuri turned to face her. Her dark eyes were swollen, her lips raw from biting. "What if there is not? What if this is the end?"

Elsie reached up and cupped her face in her hands. Zuri's skin was warm, damp with tears. "Then we will make a new beginning. Somewhere else. Away from the packs. Away from the Goddess. Away from everyone who wants to tear us apart."

Zuri closed her eyes and leaned into her touch. "You do not believe that."

"I have to believe it."

A knock sounded at the door.

They sprang apart, guilt and fear flashing across their faces. Elsie smoothed her gown and composed her expression. Zuri wiped her tears and retreated to the corner of the room, her face turned toward the wall.

"Enter," Elsie said.

A maid stepped inside, her eyes downcast. "Lady Elsie. Lord Malcom of Riverpack is here to see you. He is waiting in the sitting room."

Elsie's stomach turned. "Tell him I will be there shortly."

The maid curtsied and left.

The silence returned, heavier than before.

Zuri did not turn around. "He is here. Your fated mate. Come to claim you."

Elsie crossed the room and stood behind her, close enough to speak without raising her voice. "Fated mate or not, I can still reject him. The bond is not unbreakable. It can be refused."

"And what then? What happens to you if you reject your fated mate?"

Elsie had no answer. The stories were filled with wolves who had rejected their mates and lived in pain, in emptiness, in longing. Some never recovered. Some wasted away, their wolves mourning the bond that could have been.

But she had never heard of a wolf who had rejected her mate for another woman. There were no stories for that. No precedents. No guidance.

"We will figure it out," Elsie said. "Together."

Zuri finally turned. Her face was pale, her eyes hollow. "Go. He is waiting."

"Zuri..."

"Go, Elsie. Before I fall apart."

Elsie wanted to stay. She wanted to lock the door and hold Zuri and pretend that the rest of the world did not exist. But she could not. Malcom was waiting. And if she did not face him now, he would only come back. He would only try harder.

She leaned in and pressed a kiss to Zuri's cheek, soft and lingering.

"I love you," she whispered. "I will always love you."

Then she left.

---

The sitting room was warm, lit by a dozen candles and a crackling fire. Malcom stood near the window, a large bouquet of red roses in his hands. His sandy hair was neatly combed, his coat immaculate, his smile bright and eager.

He turned when she entered, and his face lit up.

"Elsie." He crossed the room and stopped before her, offering the roses. "I have been looking for you everywhere. I wanted to find you the moment the ritual ended, but you disappeared so quickly."

Elsie took the roses, though she did not lift them to her nose. They were beautiful. Perfect. Everything a young woman was supposed to want.

"I needed a moment," she said. "To think."

Malcom's smile faltered, but only for an instant. "Of course. It is overwhelming, is it not? The bond. The connection. I felt it the moment the Goddess touched us. I knew. I knew you were my fated mate."

Elsie's stomach churned. She looked at his face, at his hopeful eyes, at the earnest set of his jaw. He was not a bad man. He was not cruel or unkind. He was simply... not Zuri.

"I felt it too," she admitted. The words tasted like ash.

Malcom stepped closer, his hand reaching for hers. "This is the beginning of something wonderful. I know the timing is strange, with what happened to the king and the healer. But nothing can diminish this. Nothing can diminish us."

Elsie pulled her hand back before he could touch her. "I need time, Malcom. This is... a lot to process."

He nodded, though disappointment flickered across his face. "Of course. I understand. Take all the time you need. I am not going anywhere."

He lifted the roses and pressed them into her hands again, his fingers brushing against hers.

"I knew it," he said, his voice soft with wonder. "I knew you were my fated mate."

Tori stood near the edge of the crowd, her hands clasped before her, her heart still pounding from the events of the past hour. She watched as Hecate helped Maddox to his feet. The king was pale, shaking, his body barely covered by the cloak she had draped over his shoulders. Beta Emrich moved to his other side, supporting him, guiding him toward the castle. The three of them disappeared through the great doors, swallowed by the shadows of the corridor. The festival was over. The moonlight was fading. But the memory of what had happened would linger for a long time.Hecate had done it. She had taken control. She had claimed the throne.Tori could not have been prouder.A warm hand touched her elbow. Maddox POVFirst, there was the revelation.Hecate was his mate. His fated mate. The words echoed in his skull, bouncing off the walls of his consciousness, refusing to settle. He had known it, somehow. Deep down, beneath the doubts and the questions and the guilt that had consumed him for three years, he had known. The pull he felt toward her, the inexplicable connection, the way his wolf recognized something in her that his mind could not name. It had never been a mystery. It had never been a question. She was his. She had always been his.And there was something else. Something that nagged at the edges of his awareness, a whisper of familiarity that he could not place. The bond did not feel new. It felt old. Ancient. As if it had been there for years, waiting, patient, for him to wake up and see it.He pushed the thought aside. There would be time to examine it later. Time to ask questions. Time to understand. Then she tore the pendant from his neck. The world went red.Maddox gas

Tori POVThe courtyard hummed with anticipation, the crowd pressing together beneath the silver light of the full moon. Tori stood near the back, close to Ysabella, their shoulders almost touching. The air was cool and thick with the scent of flowers and wine and the electric charge of magic that seemed to crackle across the sky.Ysabella's hand found hers and squeezed. "Are you nervous?"Tori shook her head, but her heart was pounding. "I do not know what I am."She looked across the courtyard to where Eilad stood with the Obsidian Pack retinue. He was tall and broad shouldered, his dark hair gleaming in the moonlight. He was watching her too, his honey colored eyes soft, a small smile playing on his lips.Ysabella followed her gaze and grinned. "He has not stopped looking at you all night.""He is an old friend.""He wants to be more than a friend."Tori did not deny it. She could not. The way Eilad looked at her, the way he had said her name, the way he had asked what if the Goddes

Hecate POVThe door closed behind Maddox, and the silence rushed in to fill the space where his warmth had been.I stood alone in the washroom, the echo of his footsteps fading down the corridor, the distant sound of the crowd calling him back to his duties. My lips still tingled from his kisses. My skin still burned where his hands had touched me. My heart was a war drum in my chest, beating out a rhythm I did not want to hear.I turned back to the mirror. The woman who stared back at me was not the woman I had been three years ago. Dark hair. Dark eyes. A face that belonged to a stranger. But beneath the mask, beneath the magic, beneath the carefully constructed walls, Samantha was still there. Still hurting. Still hoping. Still terrified of what she had become.I gripped the edge of the basin and forced myself to breathe. The ceremony was about to begin. Maddox would be standing on the platform, his arms raised to the moon, his voice calling down the Goddess. The young wolves would

  • The Cursed Alpha’s Only Mate   Chapter 67: The Truth

Third POVThe corridor was empty, the distant music of the festival muffled by the thick stone walls. Maddox followed the faint trail of lavender, his boots silent on the cold floor, his heart pounding with each step. The scent grew stronger as he approached the washroom, a small chamber tucked away from the main hall, used by guests who needed a moment of privacy during long events. He pushed the door open slowly.Hecate stood before the mirror, her hands braced on the edge of the marble basin, her head bowed. Her breathing was uneven, her shoulders rising and falling with each shallow breath. The candlelight flickered around her, casting dancing shadows on her pale face. She looked up when he entered, her dark eyes meeting his in the reflection. For a moment, neither of them spoke. The silence stretched between them, heavy and fragile."You followed me," she said. It was not a question."Your scent led me here."She turned to face him, her back against the basin, her hands gripping
