Chapter 2

Autor: Gemma
I floated near the ceiling and watched my mother stroke the top of Isa's head.

It took me back to a time before that signet ring tore us apart.

Back then, our parents hugged us both equally, and our mother kissed us both just as often.

When exactly did it all change?

It started the year I turned ten, when the summer camp at the cabin in the woods had room for only one of us.

A week before the trip, my mother laughed as she packed my bag, tucking insect-repellent wipes into my pocket.

But the night before the trip, she sat on the edge of Isa's bed and spoke softly to me. "Julia, you're the older one. Let Isa have the spot."

That was the first time.

I gave up my spot without really understanding and told myself there would be another chance.

What I didn't know was that it would happen a thousand more times.

Then there was the pearl-studded headband I loved. Isa looked at it twice, and my mother took it off my head and put it on Isa instead.

Then there was the antique necklace my grandmother had given me before she died, saying it was meant only for me. Isa called it pretty, and my mother told me to take it off and hand it over.

But the car crash was the worst.

My leg was broken, my vision was going black from the pain, and I was crying for my mother.

She was too busy checking the scrape on Isa's arm to even look up. "Can't you see your sister is bleeding? You'll have to wait!"

I curled up in the back seat while my sister watched me, guilt all over her face. But my mother's back formed a solid wall between me and every ounce of her care.

That was the day I finally snapped.

Isa nervously held out some wildflowers she'd picked to cheer me up, but I tore them to pieces.

My mother shook with rage. She grabbed my shoulders and looked at me with genuine disgust for the first time. "Do you think she wanted that ring? The family chose you! Isa knew you were being sent to that Cammarata hellhole, and she couldn't stand to see you suffer, so she grabbed it first! She traded her own life for your freedom! Do you understand that at all?!"

They locked me in the attic that night.

I went on a hunger strike and refused to speak to them in protest of their favoritism.

It took until the third day, when I was barely holding on, for my mother to take me in her arms and sob as if something inside her were being torn apart.

Her tears fell hot against my face, and her voice broke.

"Julia, I know what this is costing you... but Isa is being married off at eighteen to the cruelest man in that family. She's going there to die!"

The memory receded like a cold tide.

Back in the reception hall, my mother buried her face in Isa's hair again.

Under her breath, she repeated the same words she'd said to me all those years ago. "So today, just for today, let Isa have her last birthday in peace.

"After tonight, we'll really make it up to Julia..."

Make it up to me?

I lowered my gaze to my transparent body.

Nothing was ever going to be made up to me now.

Just then, my father's phone rang again.

It was the kidnappers.

Presumably to tell them I was dead.

The first time it rang, he'd pulled out his phone, hesitated, then declined the call.

The second time, he'd frowned and considered answering, his finger hovering over the button for a few seconds. Then he'd looked up at my sister and declined the call again.

That time, they hadn't called back right away.

I'd seen a flicker of relief cross his face.

Ring. Ring. Ring...

The third time.

The ringing started again.

He finally couldn't take it anymore. He cursed under his breath and answered.

What could be better than that? What I never imagined was that because of it, my family would stop seeing her altogether. They gave all their love to me and forgot that she was a child who needed love, too. They thought she was jealous. They thought she was sulking. They had no idea that all she wanted was to be held.On my eighteenth birthday, I wore a formal dress, and an elaborate eighteen-tier cake stood in front of me.I waited for my sister to come home. I waited a very long time.Instead, all I heard was that she was busy.My mother told me Julia was dealing with

After I died, my mother stopped managing the family business and threw herself into charity work. She spent her days visiting orphanages and shelters outside the city, bringing food, clothes, and toys to children with nowhere else to go.She cooked pasta for them herself. At Christmas, she dressed up as Santa and handed every child a present.People said Sofia Rossi had changed. When my mother heard that, she just smiled and said nothing. But her smile held nothing but bitterness.Whenever she saw a girl around my age, her eyes reddened. Then she would stand at a distance and watch her for a long time. Some jumped rope in the yard. Others read in a corner or fought over toys.My mother said they reminded her of me as a child. She told those children about me.She told them how, when I was eleven, I'd come back from the training camp covered in cuts and bruises but had stubbornly refused to shed a single tear.At the end, she always sighed."If my daughter were still here, she'd be abou

They buried me on a cold, wet day.My uncle, my parents, and Isa all stood in the rain, dressed in black. There was no grand ceremony or crowd of guests. My mother's sobs were the only sound.I floated above the grave and watched my black coffin being lowered into the ground.Dirt fell one shovelful at a time, landing with a dull thud. Finally, my mother couldn't take it anymore. She pulled free from my father, sank down at the edge of the grave, and wept aloud. Her heart-wrenching sobs mingled with the sound of the rain."Julia... my Julia..."With a trembling hand, she pulled a velvet box from her coat and opened it. Inside lay an antique necklace. It was the necklace my grandmother had left me before she died, saying it was mine alone. It was the one my mother had taken from me and put around Isa's neck. She also had someone bring the pearl-studded dress I'd been forced to hand over."Mom is so sorry... Mom is giving it all back..."She moved as if in a daze, whispering under her br

It was a pair of earrings. They weren't expensive. Just a moon and a star, delicately crafted from pure silver, gleaming softly in the gray morning light.Isa stared at them and went completely still. She clapped a hand over her mouth. A broken sound escaped her as tears spilled from her eyes.My mother froze, then reached out and steadied Isa by her trembling shoulders."Isa? What is it? What are they?"Isa stared at my hand through tear-filled eyes. Between sobs, she forced the words out."That's my birthday present... Julia made it for me!"The morning she left the house, she asked me in private what I wanted for my birthday..."Isa's voice was so choked with tears that the words were barely audible."I told her I wanted her to make me a pair of earrings..."She lifted her head and broke down completely."Mom, we were all wrong about Julia. She never forgot my birthday! She hadn't been sulking at all."She remembered it all along! She made my present and was bringing it to me! Then

Time stopped right there.Beneath the sheet was my lifeless face, white as paper, my cheeks sunken. My neck and the exposed parts of my arms were covered in bruises and ligature marks."Aaah!"My mother's scream tore through the air.She stumbled and collapsed beside the stretcher. She reached out a shaking hand to touch my face, but stopped halfway."Julia... Julia..."She repeated my name, her voice shattered, tears spilling onto my face."Mom's here. I'm here... Please wake up..."My father's cigarette had burned down to his fingers. It was burning him, but he didn't notice. He stared at my body, his eyes bloodshot."You goddamn animals!"My uncle's eyes reddened. He pulled the gun from his hip and aimed it at the Cammarata men."Roberto! Have you lost your mind?"Both sides had their hands on their weapons, and my father, who had always wanted peace, did nothing to stop him.Instead, he drew his own sidearm."You Cammarata men have some nerve!"My father's bloodshot eyes were locke

Before the kidnappers could get a word in, my father cut them off."Julia, I don't care how many times you call or how many lies you tell to distract your mother and me from this. I'm telling you now: even if you've really been kidnapped, neither of us is doing anything about it today!"My mother snatched the phone from him, impatience written all over her face."Julia, your father is right. If you won't come to Isa's birthday, fine. But don't interrupt us while we're celebrating her birthday."Don't call us again! Or your father and I will pretend you were never our daughter!"Then she hung up.After that, the phone stayed silent.Nobody called again. My parents finally relaxed.I watched it happen.Pain rolled through my chest in waves.I had known it was coming. I should have been past the point where it could hurt me.My sister came over, worry written all over her face. "Was that Julia? She isn't the kind of person who throws tantrums. Something must really be wrong."My father an
