Chapter 1

작가: Anna Smith
The moment the words left my mouth, the two people in front of me froze as if they’d been struck by lightning.

They stared at me in disbelief.

Victor was stunned for a split second—then he snapped, swearing under his breath.

“What the hell are you saying? In front of a child?!”

I glanced at Lily, who was hiding in his arms, and repeated calmly,

“I said, if she doesn’t want to stay with me, that’s fine.”

Then I added, without hesitation,

“I don’t want to give birth to such an unpleasant child either.”

If he still didn’t understand, I could spell it out more clearly.

I don’t want her.

I enunciated every word deliberately, slowly, making sure each syllable landed.

As soon as I finished speaking, Lily—who had been burying her face and crying hysterically, trying to force me to change my mind—suddenly lifted her head.

She looked at me, and then burst into loud, heartbroken sobs.

Her face was streaked with tears and snot.

“You’re a terrible mom! I hate you! I don’t want you!”

She flailed in Victor’s arms, squirming so hard he almost dropped her.

Victor gritted his teeth and held her tighter, lowering his head to hers.

“Hey… hey, kiddo, calm down,” he murmured.

“You know your mom loves you, right? She brought you into this world, she’s been there for you every step… even when things got messy.”

“We all know you’re her favorite.”

Under his gentle coaxing, Lily’s crying gradually faded.

She clung to his arm like an octopus, wrapped her small arms around his neck, and asked in a trembling voice,

“Really?”

“Of course,” Victor replied.

Then he glanced at me meaningfully.

“Why don’t you ask your mom yourself?”

Lily looked over at me, her eyes red and swollen, full of expectation.

But I didn’t move.

I didn’t even lift my eyelids.

I maintained the same cold, indifferent posture.

It was as if Lily had been stung.

Her mouth twisted, and it looked like she was about to cry again.

Victor finally lost his patience. His face darkened as he glared at me.

“What is wrong with you? Wanting a divorce is bad enough—but now you don’t even want your own child? Do you even deserve to be a mother?”

I let out a soft, mocking laugh.

“Didn’t she say first that she didn’t want me as her mother?” I replied coolly.

“I’m simply respecting her wishes.”

Lily’s small body stiffened.

Then she glared at me with all the hatred she could muster.

“You’re the one who didn’t want me and Dad in the first place!” she shouted.

“If you really respected my opinion, why are you still insisting on a divorce?”

“My biggest opinion is that you shouldn’t get divorced!”

“Why won’t you listen?”

“You never wanted us anyway.”

“You want me to become a child with no parents!”

In my previous life, she had said the exact same things.

She had accused me of being selfish.

She had threatened that if I dared to divorce her father, she would never acknowledge me as her mother again.

Because she was still young, I didn’t argue with her.

Instead, I explained patiently.

I told her it was because her father had another woman outside the marriage—that was why I chose to leave.

I thought that if I said it clearly, she would understand.

What I got in return was her innocent yet vicious question:

“You’re not good enough, right? That’s why Dad had to go to someone else.”

“Sophia’s mom… she’s everything you’re not. Pretty, successful, loved by everyone. Her dad would never leave her.”

“You’re not good enough. Dad doesn’t want you. I don’t want you either.”

I felt my heart shatter—like falling into an endless, icy chasm.

A kind of despair I had never known before swallowed me whole.

I had always believed that even if I wasn’t a successful wife, at least I was a successful mother.

From the moment Lily was born, all my time and energy had revolved around her.

I worried she’d be cold.

I worried she’d be hungry.

I worried she’d feel wronged.

I did everything myself.

I poured everything I had into her—and all I ever got in return were words that shattered me:

“I don’t care about you. You’re not what I want.”My heart trembled violently—but even then, I never thought of giving up.

I believed that things would change once she grew up.

That when she matured, she would understand my struggles.

She would understand my love.

So I gave her even more.

Until the day of her wedding.

She invited Victor and his wife—Victor’s former mistress—onto the stage.

She addressed them as “Dad” and “Mom” in every sentence, delivering a heartfelt speech of gratitude.

In front of all the guests, she knelt before that woman and said:

“You are the person I should be most grateful to in this lifetime.”

“Thank you for freeing my father from a failed marriage. Thank you for taking care of me all these years.”

“Thank you. Without you, I wouldn’t be who I am today.”

“Please allow me to call you Mom.”

After she finished, the woman pulled her up and embraced her.

Victor stepped forward as well.

The three of them hugged, looking like the perfect family.

I stood below the stage like a joke.

It felt as if my heart were being sliced open with a blade.

Even now, the scenes of my past life remain painfully vivid.

I couldn’t help but look at Lily with pure disgust.

She was frightened—thinking I was angry because of what she had just said.

The more she spoke, the colder my heart became. So she had always known. She knew exactly how good I had been to her.She knew how deeply I loved her.And yet, she chose to pretend ignorance—to weaponize that love,to hurt me again and again without hesitation.I curled my lips into a faint, emotionless smile and said nothing.By then, both homeroom teachers had a clear sense of what had happened.Once it was proven that Mia had not stolen anything—and that the accusation was entirely fabricated—I formally requested that Lily make a public clarification and apology at the school’s Monday assembly the following week. After it was settled, I took Mia home. That night, she climbed into my bed, clutching her little blanket. Her small body curled against mine.“Mom,” she sobbed softly, patting my back,“I’ll be very, very good to you. I promise.”A few days later, my lawyer messaged me to say everything had been finalized. All that remained was a signature. On the day of the divorce, I broug

Mia heard the commotion from her room and came out to see what was going on.I told her it was nothing and gently patted her head.“Do you have everything ready for school?” I asked. She nodded. It wasn’t until the semester was about to start that I realized something unsettling—Mia and Lily were enrolled in the same school. For a moment, I considered transferring Mia elsewhere. But this school had outstanding academic resources, and the teachers had already shown genuine care and attention toward her. In the end, I decided against it.Besides, Mia was a grade above Lily. They weren’t even on the same floor.I told myself it wouldn’t be a problem.I was wrong.Less than a month into the school year, I received a call from Mia’s homeroom teacher. There was an allegation.Someone claimed Mia had stolen something. When I arrived at the school, I could hear raised voices even before I reached the office door.Lily’s voice pierced through the hallway—sharp, shrill, and aggressive.“Stealin

The next day, I took Mia to the county records office to register her legal identity. From that moment on, she was officially my child. For the remaining month and a half of summer break, Mia and I were almost inseparable. When I went to work, I brought her with me.She had a small desk set up beside mine—doing her exercises quietly while I handled meetings and documents. Those peaceful, ordinary days drew us closer in ways I hadn’t expected.Under my guidance—and admittedly, a fair bit of indulgence—Mia even learned how to act a little spoiled with me.Life was getting better. So much better that if Victor hadn’t called, I might have forgotten he existed.Ever since I refused to let them use my VIP privileges, Victor and Lily hadn’t sent me a single message. But their social media activity skyrocketed.Every day, it was the amusement park. The zoo.The aquarium. In the photos, Victor, Lily, and Charlotte stood hand in hand, smiling at the camera.A perfect family of three.Captions li

I let out a cold laugh.“I don’t recall doing anything wrong that requires your forgiveness.”“I believe I’ve already told you—none of these were bought for you.”“So please, don’t flatter yourself.”Under my mocking gaze, Lily’s face flushed crimson.Embarrassment and anger crashed together. Her whole body trembled, and it looked like she was about to burst into tears.Victor immediately pulled her into his arms and growled under his breath,“That’s enough. Even jokes have limits.”“If these aren’t for Lily, then who are they for?” he demanded.“She’s your only child.”“If not for her, then for who?”At that moment, Charlotte—who had been standing quietly to the side—stepped forward.“Lily’s mother,” she said gently,“if you’ve done something wrong, you should apologize right away.”“Don’t lie to a child just because you’re embarrassed.”“Lily is such a good girl.”“If she were my daughter, I would cherish her endlessly.”“How could you bear to make her cry?”She sighed softly as she

Mia was obedient. And she was smart. If it weren’t for her being slightly older than most adoptive families preferred, many people would have wanted her.“If you don’t mind her age,” the director said gently, “I can call you the moment she returns.”“If the two of you get along, we can begin the adoption process right away.”I nodded.“I don’t mind.”After we finalized the details, I drove back. Before heading home, I stopped by the mall. Before leaving the orphanage, I had asked the director for Mia’s clothing and shoe sizes.I wanted to buy a few outfits in advance—so when she arrived, she wouldn’t have to wear hand-me-downs.I assumed all little girls were the same.So I bought what Lily used to like.Dolls. Dresses. Shoes. Accessories.I was about to leave when I unexpectedly ran into Lily. She was holding Victor’s hand with one hand. And with the other—A strange woman’s hand.I glanced over once.It was Victor’s mistress.Charlotte.The three of them stood side by side, looking exa

Lily shrank back into Victor’s arms.In a small, defensive voice, she argued,“I… I didn’t say anything wrong! Wouldn’t it be better if our whole family stayed together? Dad begged you for so long, and you still insist on getting divorced.”“You never think about how I feel!”I tugged at the corner of my mouth, my gaze falling on her with unmistakable mockery.“Your father begged me not to divorce him because he cheated.”“The fault is his. Divorce does him no favors at all.”Just thinking about it made me want to laugh. In my previous life, desperate to secure Lily’s custody as quickly as possible, I had made countless concessions during the asset division.Victor had secretly plotted to take all the shares, leaving me with nothing but a hollow shell of a company. This time, I wouldn’t be that foolish again.Lily looked stunned by my words. She lifted her head and stared at Victor in confusion, clearly not understanding what cheating meant. When I exposed Victor’s true face in front o
