Chapter 4

Author: Redleaves
When I moved back home from the recovery room, I pushed open the door to what used to be my bedroom.

It looked exactly as disgusting as I remembered.

The room used to smell like white lilies — clean, faint, mine.

Now it reeked of Lyra. Cloying, sweet — gardenias.

I tried to ignore the smell and started searching for my necklace.

The arrow I'd taken for Julian three years ago — something about it had never made sense.

I'd never figured out who actually wanted him dead.

Even if I was leaving, I'd at least give him that much.

The truth was hidden inside my necklace.

Show him who pulled the trigger. Then I could walk away clean.

While I was searching, I heard Lyra's voice.

"Rafaela, what are you looking for?"

I turned around. She was standing right behind me. I hadn't heard her come in.

"My moonstone necklace. Have you seen it?"

She paused, then her face brightened. "Oh — that. I've seen it."

She reached down the front of her dress and pulled out a chain. She was smiling. "This one?"

It was the necklace Julian had given me at our bonding ceremony.

That night he'd told me he was going to use this necklace to keep me with him forever.

Now he'd just handed it off to someone else.

Lyra was watching my face for the hurt.

She smiled. "Rafaela, do you know when he gave it to me?"

"The first night we slept together."

"You were running a high fever. We were sponging you down."

"He stroked your face for so long. You wouldn't even open your eyes for him."

"But I would."

I swayed for a fraction of a second. Then I steadied myself.

I made myself breathe.

Right now neither of them — nor that necklace — meant anything to me. The only thing I cared about was the image the moonstone had captured.

Show them. Warn them about the real killer.

Then I could leave.

I whispered the activation spell. The moonstone embedded in the pendant began to glow softly. An image surfaced.

It showed me, three years ago.

Smiling. Waiting in the cabin in the woods for Julian to arrive.

Then suddenly — a wolfsbane-tipped crossbow bolt. Through a blind angle in the window. Aimed to kill.

The moonstone caught the shooter's profile clear as day.

When I saw the face, my heart felt like it had been hit with a stone.

With Lyra in custody, Iron Hollow Pack convened a public trial. The ceremony grounds went silent. From the high seat, Julian opened in a cold voice."Lyra Vance. You stand accused of attempting to assassinate the Luna. The evidence is conclusive. Do you confess?"Lyra was a wreck — but the fight in her eyes hadn't gone out.She denied everything. "I didn't do it. I didn't do anything!"She pointed at me through her tears. Her last performance was beginning."It's her! Rafaela Vance!""She's jealous I have the Alpha's love. She set this whole thing up to frame me!"She glanced up at the moon — not yet full — and turned to me with a vicious smile."Do you have proof, Rafaela? Three years ago — or tonight — do you have proof?"I nodded calmly. "I do. Three nights from now, the night of the full moon, I'll show it.""You're lying!"She was screaming. "If you have it, show it now! You don't, do you? You don't have anything!"Whispers ran through the watching crowd."Three days," I said. "Bu

"It's identical — identical — to the bolt that nearly killed Luna Rafaela three years ago."The proof was sitting right there. P

At Julian's invitation, I walked back into what used to be my bedroom. It had been put back to the way I liked it. White lilies. The right scent.Julian was standing in the middle of the room, holding the red elixir, anxious. My eyes went to his hand. I almost smiled. His ring finger was bare. He had taken off the mate ring Lyra gave him.He cleared his throat. He started in, full of feeling."Rafaela. These last few days I've thought about it all. The person I love most has always been you. My fated mate.""If you really can't accept Lyra and me — I'll cut her off. Right now."I gave him a small smile. "No. I wish you and Lyra a happy life together."His face crumpled. "Don't say that. I only want you, Rafaela."He was babbling. "I know now — your wolf is too damaged, that's why you've forgotten how it was between us."He stepped forward and pressed the vial into my hand. His eyes were burning."Drink it. Once you're healed, everything goes back to how it was."I took the vial and dra

Julian had gone back to his pack — pacing like a caged animal.Lyra hovered at his side, watching him nervously. He turned on her. The doubt he'd been holding back finally broke through."That arrow three years ago. What actually happened?"He paused. Watched her eyes. "Was it you?"Her body stiffened. The tears were instant."Julian — how can you doubt me?"She wept hard. "I've given you everything. I'm carrying your pup —"He gave a short, cold sound. He looked her over. Half believing, half not.She grabbed his sleeve like it was the last thing keeping her alive."If you don't believe me — let me face her. Let me confront my sister!"She choked on the words. He'd looked at me the same way then."Rafaela. I'll wait my whole life for you. The shooter was Lyra. The image distorted and broke apart like a soap bubble. Both of us — Lyra and me — went pale at the same time.I forced the words out. "Why?"Every one of Lyra's fragile, tearful masks fell away at once. What was left was raw, naked envy."Rafaela! Why?! Why are you Julian's fated mate?!""All those years he wouldn't even look at me!""You were unconscious for three years and he was still obsessed with you!"I couldn't even recognize the girl in front of me.She laughed until tears ran down her face. "You know, that arrow was for you.""If you'd died, I could have stepped in. Become the new Luna. Naturally.""Julian came in suddenly. That's why I missed.""I never thought you'd be that stupid.
