Confetti draped over my shoulder, with one strip falling into the coffee I'd just poured.

After a brief silence, Joel Harrington was the first to react. He subtly moved away from Elodie Shaw and took a few steps toward me.

"What brings you back to the office?"

It was a strange question.

Crestwell was the company I'd founded from the ground up. Since when did I need to give him advance notice before coming in?

I plucked the confetti off my shoulder, doing my best to keep my voice calm.

"My client will be here in 20 minutes. I came back to get some documents."

Joel glanced toward the conference room, frowning slightly.

"Didn't Leah inform you? I asked her to tell you about this afternoon's event."

"She mentioned the company outing, but she didn't say the records room would be locked, too."

"The original plan was to go out for the gathering, but Elodie said there was no need to make a big fuss, so everyone agreed to celebrate here instead."

He paused, then continued, "You've been working on that project for so long that you should know the details by heart. Not having the documents shouldn't affect your negotiations."

I looked at him and said nothing.

Joel wasn't wrong about my familiarity with the project. Even without the documents, I could recite the entire proposal from memory, but my client was visiting Crestwell for the first time, and there was no one in the office. The conference room hadn't even been prepared.

A celebratory banner bearing Elodie's name was hanging in the workspace. This wasn't something he could simply brush aside by claiming it wouldn't affect the negotiations.

Besides, the documents he considered dispensable contained details that would determine our final quotation.

"Unlock the records room first," I said. "Then have the administrative team prepare the conference room."

Someone behind Joel murmured an acknowledgment but made no move to act, clearly waiting for his response.

A few seconds later, he nodded. "Do as she says."

Only then did the frozen crowd begin to disperse.

Elodie handed the flowers she was holding to a colleague and approached me.

"Ms. Landry, I should have thought this through more carefully," she said. "I assumed Mr. Harrington had already coordinated the schedule. I didn't realize you had an important appointment."

She glanced at her watch. "We can celebrate anytime, but your project can't be delayed. Let me help you retrieve the documents."

Her tone was polite, and she made no attempt to show off.

Even so, I caught the implication of her words.

"Do you have access to the records room?"

Elodie paused for a moment, then nodded.

"Mr. Harrington gave me temporary access so I could familiarize myself with Crestwell's core business."

I turned to Joel.

As though he'd anticipated my question, he calmly explained, "Elodie can't spend her entire career handling small deals, and Crestwell can't rely on you to carry everything forever. I intend to gradually involve her in major projects."

"How long has she been working here?"

"Ability has nothing to do with how long someone's been employed."

"So you gave someone who's still on probation access to our core records without even informing the project lead?"

Joel glanced around before lowering his voice. "This was a management decision. If you have a problem with it, we can discuss it after the client leaves. There's no need to embarrass Elodie in front of everyone."

I suddenly remembered our first year in business, when Joel had spent several sleepless nights worrying about a financing deal that had fallen through. Back then, I'd canceled an out-of-town project I'd already secured so I could stay and help him revise the proposal over and over again.

At three in the morning, he sat beside me at the table, took my hand, and said, "Theresa, whatever happens to Crestwell, let's always talk things through together."

I'd held on to those words all these years.

Now, it seemed that he kept his promise only when Elodie wasn't around.

I didn't attend the trial, but Riley later told me how it had ended. Elodie had used fraudulent supplier contracts to divert company funds into accounts she controlled, using part of the money to pay off her personal debts. After the project fell apart, she'd gone a step further and forged documents bearing my electronic signature in an attempt to shift some of the blame onto me.She was the mastermind behind the scheme and the one who had ultimately profited from it. In the end, she was sentenced to prison.Joel hadn't personally taken all the money, but he'd continued authorizing payments despite knowing that the supplier's credentials were fraudulent and that the funds were being diverted. To cover the shortfall, he'd also transferred money from other projects and helped fabricate documents to conceal what had happened. He, too, had to face criminal consequences for his actions. After the verdict, Crestwell entered liquidation. Its remaining assets were used first to compensat

The investigation lasted nearly two months. I submitted all my emails, resignation documents, records showing that my access had been revoked, and the audio recording of the meeting we held back then. The IT team also confirmed that my work account had already been deactivated by the time the payment authorization document was generated. The device used to upload the file belonged to Elodie. With each piece of evidence corroborating the others, I was quickly cleared of suspicion. On the day I left the investigators' office, I stood by the roadside for a long time.Looking back, I felt relieved that I hadn't returned to Crestwell just because Joel had reminded me how much of myself I'd invested in the company. In the past, whenever he needed me, he would say, "You're my wife. What's wrong with helping me out just this once?"But he'd never considered that this time, helping him could cost me more than money. It could jeopardize my future and even my freedom.Meanwhile, my divor

To secure the deal, Elodie had agreed to terms far more stringent than those in the original proposal. Crestwell would not only lose out on the several million dollars it had expected to earn, but also face compensation claims large enough to threaten its financial stability. When the news broke, Joel called me more than a dozen times. By the time I clocked out and left the office, his car was parked by the roadside."Mr. Grisham wants to see you," he said. "If you show up, he's willing to give us a little more time.""What's the point?""You were the one who landed this deal. Mr. Grisham and his partners trust you.""I wasn't the one who signed the contract," I countered. "And I wasn't the one who changed the supplier.""I know."Joel took a deep breath, trying to keep his voice under control, but his usual composure was nowhere to be found."If you're willing to come back, I'll restore all your former positions," he continued. "You'll be in charge of the project again, and I

I left the divorce proceedings entirely in Riley's hands and barely contacted Joel. That was, until he appeared in front of my new office building a month later. He was wearing the familiar dark gray coat, his back still straight, though he looked slightly exhausted. The moment he saw me come out, he handed me a folder containing the supplier information."There's a small problem with the project."I didn't take it. "That's Crestwell's problem to deal with.""The original supplier refused to lower their prices. Elodie found another company with a more reasonable quote, but someone needs to assess their technical capabilities.""Doesn't Crestwell have people who can do that?""They don't know this project as well as you do."He paused, his tone softening. "Theresa, I'm not asking you to come back. I just need you to take a quick look. It won't take long. Once the project is completed, Crestwell will give you credit for the original proposal." I stared at him, then sudden

I stopped beside the car."We founded Crestwell together," Joel said, his voice hoarse and strained. "Have you forgotten how we pulled through back in that small office?"Of course I hadn't. At the lowest point in our lives, we had squeezed into a cramped little office, splitting a single portion of takeout between us every day. Whenever he fell asleep at his desk, I'd drape my jacket over his shoulders before heading out to meet clients with him again the next morning.Back then, he'd said Crestwell was our second home. But now, he was bringing Elodie into that home, letting her work with my clients, access my data, and take over my projects, only to turn around and ask me not to make things difficult for her."That's exactly why I'm leaving," I said, opening the car door. "I don't want to watch everything I've worked so hard to build become a tool for you to repay an old debt."…That evening, Joel signed off on Crestwell's new staffing arrangements. Elodie officially took

Joel's composure finally cracked."Is this because of today's celebration? Or is it because I let Elodie get involved in the project?""It's neither.""Then what is this about?" His voice grew strained. "We've been married for years. And now because Elodie's back, you're trying to file for divorce?"Elodie stood at the door, reluctant to enter. "Ms. Landry," she finally said after a moment of silence. "If this is about me, I can leave right away. There's no need to use your marriage with Joel to spite him."I looked at her, then at Joel. Even until now, he still thought this was about me getting jealous. "This isn't because of her." I withdrew my gaze and pushed my phone toward him. "It's because you still don't know what you've done wrong."Joel stared at the document on my phone, momentarily at a loss for words. Still standing at the doorway, Elodie glanced at him before turning to me and breaking the silence. "Ms. Landry, if my presence is bothering you, I can quit,"
