Chapter 2

作者: Nuke Smoke
"Joel's right. People are watching, so now's not the time to discuss this," Elodie said, handing me her access card. "If you think this is inappropriate, you can always revoke my access.

"Seeing how hard you've been working lately, he was just trying to find someone to help lighten your workload."

The way she addressed Joel by his first name while calling me Ms. Landry made her feelings toward each of us crystal clear, yet Joel seemed completely oblivious.

"Let's deal with the client first," he said, looking at me.

I didn't take the access card. Instead, I asked the administrative team to unlock the records room.

Just then, the receptionist hurried over.

"Ms. Landry, the client is already downstairs."

Several colleagues rushed to take down the banner while the others cleared away the cake and swept up the confetti. But the more hurried everyone became, the more mistakes they made. Someone knocked over the champagne tower, sending glassware crashing to the floor.

Joel quickly took charge.

"There's no time to clean up the main conference room. Move the meeting to the smaller one," he ordered. "Sarah, get the refreshments ready. Everyone else, back to your desks. Theresa, Elodie and I will greet Mr. Grisham with you and help explain the situation."

"She doesn't need to come."

The moment the words left my mouth, Elodie pulled a USB drive from her pocket.

"Ms. Landry, I have the latest project data here," she said. "It might come in handy. I won't be joining the meeting. I'll just hand the files over to you."

I took the USB drive and plugged it into the computer beside me. The moment the folder opened, my hand froze on the mouse.

It contained not only the publicly available proposal but also the cost data updated just the night before. That data hadn't even been shared with the project team. It existed only in my personal workspace and Joel's management account.

The elevator chimed outside.

I pulled out the USB drive and looked up at Elodie. "Where did you get these files?"

Her expression didn't change, but she instinctively glanced at Joel. That was enough to tell me everything I needed to know.

By the time our client, Hugo Grisham, stepped out of the elevator, Joel had already regained his usual composure.

He stepped forward to exchange pleasantries, explaining the chaos in the office as the result of an impromptu internal celebration before smoothly steering the conversation toward Crestwell's culture.

Every word was polished and tactful.

I temporarily set aside my suspicions and led Hugo into the smaller conference room. Having spent three months preparing for this meeting, I couldn't let personal issues ruin it.

Elodie took a seat near the door and remained quiet for most of the meeting. However, when Hugo asked about a set of updated figures, she gave him the exact numbers without hesitation.

Hugo looked surprised. "You seem quite familiar with the project, Ms. Shaw."

"I've simply done some preparation in advance," Elodie replied, smiling. "Ms. Landry is still the one in charge."

Her answer was impeccable. She neither took credit for my work nor missed the opportunity to let everyone know she'd already been involved in the project.

Hugo nodded.

"Will you be involved in the project going forward as well?"

I was about to answer when Joel beat me to it.

"Crestwell is developing new project leads," Joel said. "Ms. Landry will continue to lead the project for now, and Ms. Shaw will assist her later on."

I glanced at him, but he met my gaze without flinching, as though this were nothing more than a routine staffing decision.

The rest of the meeting proceeded smoothly.

Before leaving, Hugo cast a meaningful glance between Joel and me.

"I hope we can settle on who's going to lead the project by the time we meet again."

After seeing him off, I remained rooted in front of the elevator for a while.

Steady footsteps approached from behind, and Joel's voice rang out beside me.

"Things were a little rushed today, but overall, it went well."

"So this is what you meant when you said it wouldn't affect the negotiations?"

"Mr. Grisham didn't turn us down," he stated. "He just needs more time."

I didn't argue with him any further and headed back to the conference room instead.

The documents I hadn't had time to organize were still scattered across the table. As I stared at the pages covered in countless revisions, I was suddenly reminded of when the project had first begun.

It had coincided with our wedding anniversary, so I'd booked a restaurant that day and prepared a share transfer agreement as a gift for Joel.

I'd waited at the restaurant for two hours, only to receive a message from him saying he'd had something urgent come up. I later learned that Elodie had just returned to the country and gotten into an argument with someone at the airport after drinking.

Worried that something might happen to her, Joel had gone to pick her up himself. He hadn't returned home until the early hours of the morning, his jacket carrying the unfamiliar scent of women's perfume.

He'd explained that he'd merely helped Elodie steady herself.

It had bothered me, but I'd chosen not to press the issue.

After all, they'd known each other for years, and Elodie had only just returned to the country. She didn't have anyone close to her here.

I didn't attend the trial, but Riley later told me how it had ended. Elodie had used fraudulent supplier contracts to divert company funds into accounts she controlled, using part of the money to pay off her personal debts. After the project fell apart, she'd gone a step further and forged documents bearing my electronic signature in an attempt to shift some of the blame onto me.She was the mastermind behind the scheme and the one who had ultimately profited from it. In the end, she was sentenced to prison.Joel hadn't personally taken all the money, but he'd continued authorizing payments despite knowing that the supplier's credentials were fraudulent and that the funds were being diverted. To cover the shortfall, he'd also transferred money from other projects and helped fabricate documents to conceal what had happened. He, too, had to face criminal consequences for his actions. After the verdict, Crestwell entered liquidation. Its remaining assets were used first to compensat

The investigation lasted nearly two months. I submitted all my emails, resignation documents, records showing that my access had been revoked, and the audio recording of the meeting we held back then. The IT team also confirmed that my work account had already been deactivated by the time the payment authorization document was generated. The device used to upload the file belonged to Elodie. With each piece of evidence corroborating the others, I was quickly cleared of suspicion. On the day I left the investigators' office, I stood by the roadside for a long time.Looking back, I felt relieved that I hadn't returned to Crestwell just because Joel had reminded me how much of myself I'd invested in the company. In the past, whenever he needed me, he would say, "You're my wife. What's wrong with helping me out just this once?"But he'd never considered that this time, helping him could cost me more than money. It could jeopardize my future and even my freedom.Meanwhile, my divor

To secure the deal, Elodie had agreed to terms far more stringent than those in the original proposal. Crestwell would not only lose out on the several million dollars it had expected to earn, but also face compensation claims large enough to threaten its financial stability. When the news broke, Joel called me more than a dozen times. By the time I clocked out and left the office, his car was parked by the roadside."Mr. Grisham wants to see you," he said. "If you show up, he's willing to give us a little more time.""What's the point?""You were the one who landed this deal. Mr. Grisham and his partners trust you.""I wasn't the one who signed the contract," I countered. "And I wasn't the one who changed the supplier.""I know."Joel took a deep breath, trying to keep his voice under control, but his usual composure was nowhere to be found."If you're willing to come back, I'll restore all your former positions," he continued. "You'll be in charge of the project again, and I

I left the divorce proceedings entirely in Riley's hands and barely contacted Joel. That was, until he appeared in front of my new office building a month later. He was wearing the familiar dark gray coat, his back still straight, though he looked slightly exhausted. The moment he saw me come out, he handed me a folder containing the supplier information."There's a small problem with the project."I didn't take it. "That's Crestwell's problem to deal with.""The original supplier refused to lower their prices. Elodie found another company with a more reasonable quote, but someone needs to assess their technical capabilities.""Doesn't Crestwell have people who can do that?""They don't know this project as well as you do."He paused, his tone softening. "Theresa, I'm not asking you to come back. I just need you to take a quick look. It won't take long. Once the project is completed, Crestwell will give you credit for the original proposal." I stared at him, then sudden

I stopped beside the car."We founded Crestwell together," Joel said, his voice hoarse and strained. "Have you forgotten how we pulled through back in that small office?"Of course I hadn't. At the lowest point in our lives, we had squeezed into a cramped little office, splitting a single portion of takeout between us every day. Whenever he fell asleep at his desk, I'd drape my jacket over his shoulders before heading out to meet clients with him again the next morning.Back then, he'd said Crestwell was our second home. But now, he was bringing Elodie into that home, letting her work with my clients, access my data, and take over my projects, only to turn around and ask me not to make things difficult for her."That's exactly why I'm leaving," I said, opening the car door. "I don't want to watch everything I've worked so hard to build become a tool for you to repay an old debt."…That evening, Joel signed off on Crestwell's new staffing arrangements. Elodie officially took

Joel's composure finally cracked."Is this because of today's celebration? Or is it because I let Elodie get involved in the project?""It's neither.""Then what is this about?" His voice grew strained. "We've been married for years. And now because Elodie's back, you're trying to file for divorce?"Elodie stood at the door, reluctant to enter. "Ms. Landry," she finally said after a moment of silence. "If this is about me, I can leave right away. There's no need to use your marriage with Joel to spite him."I looked at her, then at Joel. Even until now, he still thought this was about me getting jealous. "This isn't because of her." I withdrew my gaze and pushed my phone toward him. "It's because you still don't know what you've done wrong."Joel stared at the document on my phone, momentarily at a loss for words. Still standing at the doorway, Elodie glanced at him before turning to me and breaking the silence. "Ms. Landry, if my presence is bothering you, I can quit,"
