Chapter 3

作者: Nuke Smoke
From that day onward, I often slept at the office to keep the project on track.

Joel called from time to time to check on me, but he always managed to slip in a question about whether I could give Elodie a fair chance.

I thought he was simply sentimental about the past.

It wasn't until today that I realized every seemingly casual favor he did for her was another step toward putting her in my place.

Suddenly, I heard voices outside the door.

"Has Ms. Landry misunderstood something?" Elodie's voice was low. "I can explain the access issue to her personally."

"You haven't done anything wrong," Joel said, reassuring her. "She's just been under too much pressure lately. She's not targeting you."

"But that deal is with Ms. Landry's client," Elodie said. "If she finds out you're the one who took some of Mr. Grisham's requests and handed them to me, she'll be even angrier."

There was a brief silence outside.

I closed my laptop and opened the door.

"So you only landed your first deal because he took it from me?"

Joel turned to look at me, a flicker of unease crossing his face. He didn't deny it.

"The client had a small request that wasn't particularly difficult, so I let Elodie give it a try."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Clients belong to the company, not to individuals. I don't need to consult you about every routine decision involving order allocation."

He'd always been good at dodging the point.

"Then why did you have the entire company celebrate her achievement?" I asked, letting out a laugh. "You took a small order from an existing client and presented it as though she'd won the deal entirely on her own. Anyone who didn't know better would think she'd made Crestwell millions."

"The celebration wasn't about the profit," Joel argued. "It was about encouraging a new employee."

"Then why did you lock the records room today?"

"The original plan was for everyone to go out. Of course the room had to be locked."

Every one of his explanations sounded reasonable on its own. Put together, they were absurdly laughable.

"If this was all perfectly routine, why did you hide it from me?" I demanded, suppressing my anger.

Joel fell silent for a few seconds.

"Because you're prejudiced against Elodie," he finally said. "If I'd told you beforehand, you wouldn't have agreed."

For a moment, I didn't know what to say. He'd made the decision without consulting me, then used the fact that I would have objected to justify keeping it from me in the first place.

With logic like that, no matter how I responded, I'd always be the one in the wrong.

"This is my fault," Elodie suddenly said.

She took off her access card and pulled out her phone, submitting a request to revoke her own access right in front of us.

"If my presence is affecting your relationship, I can withdraw from the project. If necessary, I can even leave Crestwell."

"This isn't your fault." Joel frowned. "You don't have to bring up resigning every time something happens."

"But Ms. Landry clearly doesn't trust me."

Joel stepped forward, blocking my view of Elodie.

"Whether Elodie stays or leaves should depend on her performance, not on your personal feelings," he said. "You can't let your personal feelings about our marriage spill over into the workplace."

"Who was the one who brought his personal affairs into the workplace in the first place?"

His expression turned cold.

"If that's how you insist on seeing things, there's nothing I can do."

Those familiar words snuffed out whatever desire I had left to argue with him.

"I didn't help her for the reasons you think," Joel said, his tone softening as he noticed my silence.

"When I first took over the family business, I made a bad decision that nearly got me thrown off the board. Elodie took the blame for me. That was why she eventually went abroad."

It was the first time I'd heard him talk about what had happened back then.

"She had a much brighter future ahead of her. I owe her one."

I stared at him, unable to believe how absurd this whole thing was.

I didn't attend the trial, but Riley later told me how it had ended. Elodie had used fraudulent supplier contracts to divert company funds into accounts she controlled, using part of the money to pay off her personal debts. After the project fell apart, she'd gone a step further and forged documents bearing my electronic signature in an attempt to shift some of the blame onto me.She was the mastermind behind the scheme and the one who had ultimately profited from it. In the end, she was sentenced to prison.Joel hadn't personally taken all the money, but he'd continued authorizing payments despite knowing that the supplier's credentials were fraudulent and that the funds were being diverted. To cover the shortfall, he'd also transferred money from other projects and helped fabricate documents to conceal what had happened. He, too, had to face criminal consequences for his actions. After the verdict, Crestwell entered liquidation. Its remaining assets were used first to compensat

The investigation lasted nearly two months. I submitted all my emails, resignation documents, records showing that my access had been revoked, and the audio recording of the meeting we held back then. The IT team also confirmed that my work account had already been deactivated by the time the payment authorization document was generated. The device used to upload the file belonged to Elodie. With each piece of evidence corroborating the others, I was quickly cleared of suspicion. On the day I left the investigators' office, I stood by the roadside for a long time.Looking back, I felt relieved that I hadn't returned to Crestwell just because Joel had reminded me how much of myself I'd invested in the company. In the past, whenever he needed me, he would say, "You're my wife. What's wrong with helping me out just this once?"But he'd never considered that this time, helping him could cost me more than money. It could jeopardize my future and even my freedom.Meanwhile, my divor

To secure the deal, Elodie had agreed to terms far more stringent than those in the original proposal. Crestwell would not only lose out on the several million dollars it had expected to earn, but also face compensation claims large enough to threaten its financial stability. When the news broke, Joel called me more than a dozen times. By the time I clocked out and left the office, his car was parked by the roadside."Mr. Grisham wants to see you," he said. "If you show up, he's willing to give us a little more time.""What's the point?""You were the one who landed this deal. Mr. Grisham and his partners trust you.""I wasn't the one who signed the contract," I countered. "And I wasn't the one who changed the supplier.""I know."Joel took a deep breath, trying to keep his voice under control, but his usual composure was nowhere to be found."If you're willing to come back, I'll restore all your former positions," he continued. "You'll be in charge of the project again, and I

I left the divorce proceedings entirely in Riley's hands and barely contacted Joel. That was, until he appeared in front of my new office building a month later. He was wearing the familiar dark gray coat, his back still straight, though he looked slightly exhausted. The moment he saw me come out, he handed me a folder containing the supplier information."There's a small problem with the project."I didn't take it. "That's Crestwell's problem to deal with.""The original supplier refused to lower their prices. Elodie found another company with a more reasonable quote, but someone needs to assess their technical capabilities.""Doesn't Crestwell have people who can do that?""They don't know this project as well as you do."He paused, his tone softening. "Theresa, I'm not asking you to come back. I just need you to take a quick look. It won't take long. Once the project is completed, Crestwell will give you credit for the original proposal." I stared at him, then sudden

I stopped beside the car."We founded Crestwell together," Joel said, his voice hoarse and strained. "Have you forgotten how we pulled through back in that small office?"Of course I hadn't. At the lowest point in our lives, we had squeezed into a cramped little office, splitting a single portion of takeout between us every day. Whenever he fell asleep at his desk, I'd drape my jacket over his shoulders before heading out to meet clients with him again the next morning.Back then, he'd said Crestwell was our second home. But now, he was bringing Elodie into that home, letting her work with my clients, access my data, and take over my projects, only to turn around and ask me not to make things difficult for her."That's exactly why I'm leaving," I said, opening the car door. "I don't want to watch everything I've worked so hard to build become a tool for you to repay an old debt."…That evening, Joel signed off on Crestwell's new staffing arrangements. Elodie officially took

Joel's composure finally cracked."Is this because of today's celebration? Or is it because I let Elodie get involved in the project?""It's neither.""Then what is this about?" His voice grew strained. "We've been married for years. And now because Elodie's back, you're trying to file for divorce?"Elodie stood at the door, reluctant to enter. "Ms. Landry," she finally said after a moment of silence. "If this is about me, I can leave right away. There's no need to use your marriage with Joel to spite him."I looked at her, then at Joel. Even until now, he still thought this was about me getting jealous. "This isn't because of her." I withdrew my gaze and pushed my phone toward him. "It's because you still don't know what you've done wrong."Joel stared at the document on my phone, momentarily at a loss for words. Still standing at the doorway, Elodie glanced at him before turning to me and breaking the silence. "Ms. Landry, if my presence is bothering you, I can quit,"
