Chapter 4

作者: Nuke Smoke
Back when the board had questioned Joel's leadership, I had stood by him, helping him reconnect with clients, make up for the losses, and survive the most difficult six months of his career.

We had even mortgaged our marital home and given up our honeymoon to build the company we had today.

Elodie had taken the blame for him once, and he had remembered it for years. Yet everything I had done to hold Crestwell together seemed to have become his due simply because I had eventually married him and become his wife.

"Let's not talk about that anymore," Elodie interrupted softly. "Ms. Landry doesn't like it when you use the past as an excuse. Just like your last wedding anniversary. You only went to the airport to pick me up, and she held it against you for ages."

I slowly raised my head.

Only the two of us knew the reason behind the argument we had on our wedding anniversary.

That day, I asked him why he couldn't let his assistant, Leah Jenkins, pick Elodie instead. He said I was making a big deal out of nothing, and we never talked about this again.

But now, Elodie didn't just know what happened. She was even aware of how long I'd been holding a grudge against him.

So it turned out Joel had been telling another woman about the arguments we had, treating our rocky marriage as nothing but a story to tell.

Just then, my phone buzzed with a message from Mr. Grisham.

"Ms. Landry, Mr. Harrington mentioned earlier that it's likely Ms. Shaw will be handling the deal from now on."

"Is this a mutual decision?" I showed Joel the text message. "Is this for the sake of nurturing new employees too?"

Joel, however, didn't panic like I'd anticipated.

"I only discussed the staffing arrangements with the client in advance. Nothing has been officially decided yet," he said.

"And putting her in charge as the client's main point of contact doesn't count as an official decision?"

"Crestwell can't rely on you forever," he explained patiently. "You have too many projects on your plate. I wanted Elodie to take some of the workload off your shoulders. I was worried you were pushing yourself too hard."

He made it sound as though he was doing all this for my sake.

At that moment, the anger I had been bottling up for so long suddenly dissipated.

I walked into my office and took a document folder from a locked drawer. Joel followed me in.

"Calm down first," he said, his expression softening. "We can discuss the final project arrangements again."

I didn't answer. Instead, I pulled out the share transfer agreement from the folder.

I'd spent nearly a month working with a lawyer to prepare the gift. My original plan had been to transfer part of my shares to Joel once the deal was signed, as a belated wedding anniversary present.

Back then, I had believed we were not only husband and wife but also each other's most reliable partners. Now, it seemed that had all been wishful thinking on my part.

When I tore the agreement in half, Joel's expression finally changed.

"What are you doing?"

"Getting rid of unnecessary paperwork."

I dropped the torn pieces into the bin, then took out my phone and opened the digital copy my lawyer had just sent me. I held the screen out to him.

"From today onward, you can no longer expect me to clean up after every decision you make simply because I'm your wife."

He lowered his gaze to the screen.

It was a proposal for the division of our marital assets and shares, with preliminary terms for divorce negotiations attached at the end.

I didn't attend the trial, but Riley later told me how it had ended. Elodie had used fraudulent supplier contracts to divert company funds into accounts she controlled, using part of the money to pay off her personal debts. After the project fell apart, she'd gone a step further and forged documents bearing my electronic signature in an attempt to shift some of the blame onto me.She was the mastermind behind the scheme and the one who had ultimately profited from it. In the end, she was sentenced to prison.Joel hadn't personally taken all the money, but he'd continued authorizing payments despite knowing that the supplier's credentials were fraudulent and that the funds were being diverted. To cover the shortfall, he'd also transferred money from other projects and helped fabricate documents to conceal what had happened. He, too, had to face criminal consequences for his actions. After the verdict, Crestwell entered liquidation. Its remaining assets were used first to compensat

The investigation lasted nearly two months. I submitted all my emails, resignation documents, records showing that my access had been revoked, and the audio recording of the meeting we held back then. The IT team also confirmed that my work account had already been deactivated by the time the payment authorization document was generated. The device used to upload the file belonged to Elodie. With each piece of evidence corroborating the others, I was quickly cleared of suspicion. On the day I left the investigators' office, I stood by the roadside for a long time.Looking back, I felt relieved that I hadn't returned to Crestwell just because Joel had reminded me how much of myself I'd invested in the company. In the past, whenever he needed me, he would say, "You're my wife. What's wrong with helping me out just this once?"But he'd never considered that this time, helping him could cost me more than money. It could jeopardize my future and even my freedom.Meanwhile, my divor

To secure the deal, Elodie had agreed to terms far more stringent than those in the original proposal. Crestwell would not only lose out on the several million dollars it had expected to earn, but also face compensation claims large enough to threaten its financial stability. When the news broke, Joel called me more than a dozen times. By the time I clocked out and left the office, his car was parked by the roadside."Mr. Grisham wants to see you," he said. "If you show up, he's willing to give us a little more time.""What's the point?""You were the one who landed this deal. Mr. Grisham and his partners trust you.""I wasn't the one who signed the contract," I countered. "And I wasn't the one who changed the supplier.""I know."Joel took a deep breath, trying to keep his voice under control, but his usual composure was nowhere to be found."If you're willing to come back, I'll restore all your former positions," he continued. "You'll be in charge of the project again, and I

I left the divorce proceedings entirely in Riley's hands and barely contacted Joel. That was, until he appeared in front of my new office building a month later. He was wearing the familiar dark gray coat, his back still straight, though he looked slightly exhausted. The moment he saw me come out, he handed me a folder containing the supplier information."There's a small problem with the project."I didn't take it. "That's Crestwell's problem to deal with.""The original supplier refused to lower their prices. Elodie found another company with a more reasonable quote, but someone needs to assess their technical capabilities.""Doesn't Crestwell have people who can do that?""They don't know this project as well as you do."He paused, his tone softening. "Theresa, I'm not asking you to come back. I just need you to take a quick look. It won't take long. Once the project is completed, Crestwell will give you credit for the original proposal." I stared at him, then sudden

I stopped beside the car."We founded Crestwell together," Joel said, his voice hoarse and strained. "Have you forgotten how we pulled through back in that small office?"Of course I hadn't. At the lowest point in our lives, we had squeezed into a cramped little office, splitting a single portion of takeout between us every day. Whenever he fell asleep at his desk, I'd drape my jacket over his shoulders before heading out to meet clients with him again the next morning.Back then, he'd said Crestwell was our second home. But now, he was bringing Elodie into that home, letting her work with my clients, access my data, and take over my projects, only to turn around and ask me not to make things difficult for her."That's exactly why I'm leaving," I said, opening the car door. "I don't want to watch everything I've worked so hard to build become a tool for you to repay an old debt."…That evening, Joel signed off on Crestwell's new staffing arrangements. Elodie officially took

Joel's composure finally cracked."Is this because of today's celebration? Or is it because I let Elodie get involved in the project?""It's neither.""Then what is this about?" His voice grew strained. "We've been married for years. And now because Elodie's back, you're trying to file for divorce?"Elodie stood at the door, reluctant to enter. "Ms. Landry," she finally said after a moment of silence. "If this is about me, I can leave right away. There's no need to use your marriage with Joel to spite him."I looked at her, then at Joel. Even until now, he still thought this was about me getting jealous. "This isn't because of her." I withdrew my gaze and pushed my phone toward him. "It's because you still don't know what you've done wrong."Joel stared at the document on my phone, momentarily at a loss for words. Still standing at the doorway, Elodie glanced at him before turning to me and breaking the silence. "Ms. Landry, if my presence is bothering you, I can quit,"
