The explanation should have soothed her, but it didn't. It was the same lie, just a different reason. The foundation of their case was honesty, and he had just cracked it. Right in front of her.

"You told me you were in Berlin," she said again, her voice gaining a little strength. "When we were talking. On the ghost phone."

His jaw tightened. "It was a white lie, Anna. A necessary one. I needed to tell you I was coming home. I couldn't exactly say, 'Hey, cancel your plans, I'm flying back a day early so I can fuck you in my secret apartment before I go have a Scotch with your father.'"

His crudeness was a weapon, designed to shock her out of her anger. It worked, but only for a second.

"So you lie to him," she said, standing up, her heart starting to hammer against her ribs. "And you lie to me. Which one is the real lie, Desmond?"

"Neither," he snapped, his control finally fracturing. "They're both necessary! This whole life is a lie we are living to protect the one truth we have!"

"So where does it end?" She shot back, her own anger rising to meet his. "Do I lie to Chloe when she asks why I'm suddenly so busy? Do you lie to your board when you're skipping a meeting to be with me? Do we lie to our children someday when they ask how we met?"

The mention of children, so far in the future and yet so integral to the world they were building, hung in the air between them, raw and devastating.

"Don't," he warned, his voice low. "Don't go there."

"Why not?" She challenged, stepping closer. "Isn't that the point of all this? The 'building the case'? So we can have a real life? A family? Or is this just… a better class of secret? A penthouse instead of a boathouse?"

The question hit its mark. He flinched as if she'd slapped him. "You know it's more than that."

"Do I?" She asked, her voice trembling. "Or am I just the latest, most exciting mistake? The one you can't quite give up?"

"That's not fair."

"Fair?" She let out a harsh, broken laugh. "You want to talk about fair? I was in love with a ghost for years, Desmond. A phantom I could see but never touch. And now I have you, and I feel like I'm losing you to a million other people.

To your business trips, to your ex-wife, to my own father. I don't even know who I'm angry at."

"Then be angry at me," he said, closing the last bit of distance between them. He grabbed her arms, not gently, but with a desperate, pleading force. "Yell at me.

Scream at me. Hit me if you want to. But don't you dare, for one second, think that this," he said, gesturing around the room, "is a mistake. Or that you are."

His eyes were burning, a brilliant, furious blue. He wasn't just angry; he was terrified. She saw it then, the raw, exposed nerve beneath the polished armor of the CEO. He was as trapped in this as she was.

The anger drained out of her as quickly as it had come, leaving behind a hollow, aching sadness. "I just want one day," she whispered, a tear finally escaping and tracing a path down her cheek.

"One twenty-four-hour period where I don't have to lie. Where I can hold your hand in the street. Where I can tell my father that the man who taught me how to skip stones is the same man I'm in love with."

He didn't answer. He just leaned down and kissed her, and it was a kiss that tasted of salt and desperation. It wasn't a kiss of passion, but of penitence. A promise and a plea.

When he pulled away, he rested his forehead against hers. "I know," he whispered, his voice rough with emotion. "God, Anna, I know

The two weeks that followed were a blur of beauty and bliss. They were a real couple. They argued good-naturedly over the merits of Brunelleschi's dome versus Giotto's bell tower. He bought her a leather-bound sketchbook from a tiny shop tucked away in a quiet alley. She dragged him to a hole-in-the-wall trattoria, where they ate plates of pasta so simple and perfect it made him weep. They walked through the Uffizi, and as they stood before Botticelli's ‘Primavera,’ he slipped his arm around her waist, a casual, public gesture that made her heart swell with a joy so potent it was almost painful."He looks like he's in love," Anna whispered, pointing to the figure of Mercury in the painting."He's not the only one," Desmond murmured, his lips brushing against her temple. In the privacy of her small apartment overlooking a quiet courtyard, their love deepened, shedding the last vestiges of its secret, furtive beginnings. Their lovemaking was no longer tinged with desperation or the thri

“He wants us to be a unit."A fresh wave of pain washed over her. He wasn't just her father's friend; he was being inducted into the family she was about to leave."And I told him no," Desmond said.Anna stared at him, sure she must have misheard. "What?""I told him I had plans. Personal plans." He took another step, closing the distance between them. "I told him I was in love with a woman who was going to be in Florence for six months, and that I intended to spend as much of that time as I could with her."Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic, wild beat. "Desmond, you didn't.""I did," he said, a flicker of a smile on his lips. "He was… confused. He asked who she was. I told him it wasn't his business yet.""Yet?" She whispered."I'm not asking for a day, Anna," he said, reaching out to take her hands. His hands were cold, trembling slightly. "I'm asking for a season. I'm asking for the spring. I'm asking for the chance to stand with you in the Uffizi Gallery and argue abo

Anna made a decision. She stopped playing the game. She didn't return to the library. She didn't answer the next five texts from him. She ignored the key that felt like a lead weight in her bag. She went home and she lay in the dark, and for the first time since that night at the lake, she tried to imagine a life without him. It was a desolate, hollow landscape, but it was a landscape. A real one.The next morning, she went to the university registrar's office. It was impulsive, a desperate act of self-preservation. She signed up for a study abroad program. A semester in Florence. Art history. The departure date was January. Two months away. She didn't tell him. She didn't tell anyone. It was her own secret, the one thing in her life he didn't have a key to.He found out, of course. He always found out.He was waiting for her outside her lecture hall three days later. Not in the penthouse, not in a car, but out in the open, in the crisp autumn air. He looked haggard, a desperation in

Chapter 14The days that followed were coated in a thin layer of ice. The easy intimacy of their sanctuary was gone, replaced by a brittle formality. They still met at the penthouse, but the conversations were stilted, the silences heavy with the unspoken lie from Berlin.Anna felt like she was living in a state of hyper-awareness. Every text message from her father sent a jolt of adrenaline through her. Every public appearance with Desmond was a performance, her smile a mask she feared would crack at any moment. The joy had been leached out of their secret, replaced by the grinding anxiety of maintaining it.He tried. He really did. He brought her favorite pastries from the little bakery near her apartment. He left a single, perfect rose on the pillow in the library. He held her for hours one afternoon, saying nothing, just stroking her hair until the knot in her chest loosened its grip. But the trust, once so solid, had been fractured. It was a hairline crack, but it was there, a re

Her new phone buzzed almost immediately. It was a picture of the leather armchair in the library, with a single book lying open on its seat. The text followed: "My favorite chapter is waiting for you." That was their life now. A public dance of indifference and a private symphony of secrets. One grey afternoon in November, the two worlds collided. Anna was in the university library, a place she usually loved, its hallowed silence a balm to her soul. But today, the silence was fractured. Two tables away, a group of her classmates were gossiping, their voices a stage whisper that carried in the quiet space. "...so gorgeous," one of them, a girl named Jessica, was saying. "And so mysterious. Apparently he's single again." "Who?" Her friend asked. "Desmond Dowells, who else?" Jessica said, as if it were obvious. "He came to my brother's finance seminar last week. The whole room was just… buzzing." Anna froze, her hand hovering over the page of her art history text. A cold kno
