Chapter 4

작가: Forest
On the drive back to the estate, Isabella leaned against the back seat with her eyes closed.

We had just merged onto the highway when headlights flared behind us.

A black sedan swerved in from the right, with a gun barrel jutting from its window.

Bullets shattered the rear window, and one hit Isabella in the arm.

The driver swerved wildly through traffic, finally shaking off our pursuers.

When we reached the estate, I helped Isabella out of the car.

She had been shot in the arm, and the skin around her wound had turned black.

By the time Bruno arrived, Isabella was unconscious.

After examining her, Bruno's expression turned grim. “Isabella has been poisoned.

“Years ago, she was poisoned while protecting the old Don. It was ricin, just like this.

“Some of the toxin remained in her system. The new dose reactivated what was left. Her condition is worse than yours.”

The maid sobbed. “What will happen to her?”

Bruno looked at me. “Nick took the last dose of antidote.”

I didn't say anything. The maid sank to the floor at my feet, crying.

“Donna, Isabella always said you reminded her of herself.

“When she was poisoned protecting the old Don, no one looked out for her. And now you...”

I leaned against the wall as the poison coursed through my body, my vision fading in and out.

I remembered when I first married into the Valenti family. My father and older brother had just died. My younger brother was all I had left.

No one in the Valenti family would even look at me. Only Isabella took my hand. “Julia, from now on, you're my daughter.”

I called Nick and told him to send the antidote back.

Nick said, “Mia was suffering from the poison last night, so I gave her the antidote. There's none left.”

So they had never intended to use the antidote to save me.

Isabella was unconscious. As a last resort, I called my younger brother and asked him to send me one dose of antidote.

It arrived that same night. I held the vial in my palm, knowing it was my only chance to survive.

As I listened to the maid cry, I thought about all the years Isabella had protected me.

In the end, I handed the antidote to Bruno. “Give this dose to Isabella.”

Bruno froze. “Donna, if she gets it, what about you?”

I smiled bitterly. “She was once poisoned while protecting the old Don. She shouldn't die from it now.

“After my father and brother died, she was kinder to me than anyone in the Valenti family. I can't forget that.”

By then, I was too weak to stand. Only a ventilator was keeping me alive.

I lay cradled in Isabella's arms.

I watched as the lifesaving antidote flowed into her vein.

When Isabella woke, I was dying. Even the ventilator couldn't keep me alive much longer.

Nick and Mia had been gone all night. They still hadn't returned.

Bruno looked at me and shook his head. “Isabella, I'm afraid Julia won't make it through the night.”

Isabella took my hand. “Julia, whatever your last wishes are, tell me. I'll make sure they're carried out.”

The night before, I'd made arrangements for the remaining members of my family. I told them that once I was gone, they were no longer to risk their lives for the Valenti family.

I had also asked my younger brother, Paolo Ferraro, to take my ashes back to the estate our father had bought.

I said, “I want to be buried in the family cemetery, beside Mom, Dad, and our brother.”

As I lay dying, I held Isabella's hand tightly. “When I'm gone, I don't want to be Nick's wife anymore.

“I don't want to be his Donna... or his wife.

“Will you promise me?”

Isabella choked back tears. “Julia, I promise. I'll make sure Nick leaves you in peace.”

I took off the bullet pendant and gave it to her, along with my wedding ring.

I closed my eyes as their sobs filled the room.

Meanwhile, at the Valenti family's restaurant, Nick had his arm around Mia and was pouring her wine.

The phone rang, shrill and insistent. Nick answered with barely concealed impatience. “What is it?”

It was his mother. “Nick Valenti, your marriage to Julia ended when she died.”

Before he could react, she went on. “As of this moment, you're no longer the Don of the Valenti family.

“You have no wife. No family.

“You have nothing.”

Just one last time.”Before Paolo could answer, Nick continued. “I know you won't allow it, so I won't set foot in your family cemetery.“I only want to see the estate. Just once.“I once promised her that I'd come to the Ferraro estate and see where she grew up.“I came to keep that promise.”Paolo's voice was calm. “She's gone. Who are you keeping that promise for now?”Nick looked up at him. “Even if she's gone, I want to keep it. Maybe I

After spending six months in exile, Nick rallied a group of men who were still willing to follow him.Nick spoke to the men who had remained loyal. “My mother may have disowned me, but as long as I'm alive, I still carry the Valenti name.“You followed me because I was once the Don of the Valenti family.“I swear I'll rebuild this family.”Nick was full of ambition, but reality hit him hard.He and his men seized a dock and lost it three days later.Dario investigated and discovered that their rival was a new family backed by the Ferraro family. With no other choice, Nick sent Dario to win back his former allies. Two weeks later, Dario called. “Mr. Valenti, we're on our own. The funeral took place without incident. Nobody told Nick about it.He only heard how it went from Dario.Dario said, “Ms. Ferraro was cremated and laid to rest in the Ferraro family cemetery.“Her headstone says...”Nick pressed him. “Says what?”Dario pushed up his glasses. “Julia Ferraro.”Nick's hand froze halfway to his glass. Dario went on. “Mr. Valenti, Ms. Ferraro will never forgive you.“Please pull yourself together. If you want everything she did for you to mean something, you need to reclaim your position as Don.”Nick hung his head. “I know. I'll return to the Valenti estate, beg my mother's forgiveness, and reclaim my place as Don.”Early the next morning, Nick drove back to the estate. When he saw his mother, he knelt before her and lowered his head. “Mother, I was wrong. I came to ask your forgiveness.“I promised Father I'd take care of Mia after he was gone. But that was no excuse for letting her get away with everything.“I killed Mia. I made her pay for what she did

Isabella's people later said that during the three-day wake at the funeral home, Nick questioned everyone who might know where I was. But Isabella had given the order, and no one dared tell him. After the wake, my body was taken to the Ferraro family chapel. Nick didn't find me until the night of my funeral Mass.Nick tried to slip into the chapel disguised as one of the Ferraro crew, but Paolo's men saw through him and stopped him at the door.Nick begged them. “I'm Julia's husband. Let me see her one last time.”“She has nothing to do with you anymore.”In the middle of the standoff, Paolo came out holding a notebook and shoved it into Nick's hands. “Nick, read this carefully. See everything my sister did for you all these years.“And how you treated her.”Nick opened the notebook. It was the diary I had kept for the past five years. The first entry was dated the day after our wedding.“Nick has just become Don. His position is still unstable, and he's meeting with Don Bill Lucchetti

Nick collapsed to the floor and watched them carry me away.Mia wiped her tears and helped him up. “Nick, what do we do? If your family won't recognize you, then I...”Nick said nothing. Isabella came out of the bedroom with Bruno and looked at Mia. “Ms. Conti, you came back at just the right time.”“Isabella, what do you mean?”Isabella looked at her. “A homewrecker who used my son to gain status has no right to address me by name.”Nick instinctively stepped in front of her. “Mother, Julia's death is my fault! It has nothing to do with Mia. Don't take it out on her!”“Take it out on her? Nick, guess what our people found in her bedroom.”Nick froze. “What?”Bruno had stayed at the estate since the night before. He had searched Mia's bedroom and found the antidote. When Bruno held up the vial, Nick stopped breathing for a moment. “Didn't I give this antidote to Mia?”Mia's face went pale, and she began to tremble. “No, that antidote isn't mine.”Bruno pointed to the number on the vial

Nick dropped the wine bottle, and it shattered on the floor. Mia went pale. The whole restaurant went quiet.Nick snapped out of his shock and turned to his secretary. “What did my mother just say?”Dario answered him. “Your mother said Julia is dead and that your marriage ended with her death.“The family no longer recognizes you as its Don.”Nick stared at him. “That can't be true.“Julia has pulled through every attack for years. She won't die now.“She loves me too much. She'd never divorce me.“My mother is old. She's so angry that she doesn't know what she's saying.”Mia clutched Nick's sleeve, too stunned to speak.Nick shook her off, got to his feet, and called Dario over. “Get the driver. I'm going back to the estate.”The car had barely passed through the estate gates when rain began to pour.Nick didn't even wait for the car to stop before he ran into the rain.Every light in the living room was on. Bruno was waiting there, and Nick grabbed him by the shoulders. “Julia... my
