Irene’s POV

Diego stood in the darkness of our small apartment, a glint of dark pleasure in his eyes as he shrouded my father's head with a black bag.

A typical mafia execution style.

Then, he motioned to one of his men, who handed him a silver pistol.

Horror seeped into my bones, paralyzing me as I watched the gun barrel drift in slow motion, halting to aim at my father's head.

Time froze.

Every dripping second sounded like a countdown to my father's death.

My pulse quickened drastically, my mind screamed for me to act, but my limbs felt heavy, disconnected.

I lay there, powerless.

I choked out a whisper before he could pull the trigger.

“Please... Spare his life.”

"I'll do anything!”

Tears flooded my face, hot and uncontrollable. I couldn't breathe, couldn't think.

All I could do was plead.

Diego turned, and our eyes met. For a split second, I could swear I saw a flicker of pity in his eyes, but the emotion vanished as quickly as it appeared.

Maybe my desperation was making me see things.

There was nothing remotely humane about this man. He was tall, broad-shouldered, with an eerily handsome face that was haunting and enchanting altogether.

There was a stillness in his aura, from his composed movements to the permanent scowl on his face. Every inch of him screamed of a cold and brutal power.

“Come here,” he ordered, his voice deep and raspy.

I moved myself toward him, my limbs trembling as I crawled on all fours, my pride and dignity dragged along in the dirt.

I reached the heel of his polished shoe.

“Tell me, what can you offer in exchange for his life?” he whispered.

A shiver ran down my spine.

I had nothing…

My father altered the course of our lives when he placed a big bet at the Vargas casino, owned by the mafia Don himself, Diego.

He lost and accrued a debt of over five million euros.

The payment deadline came and went, but we couldn't settle even a quarter of the money.

We sold everything in our name, but it was all like a drop of water against an ocean.

Tonight was retribution.

Diego was out for blood.

"I… I have nothing of value,”

“Except my life," I stammered.

He lowered himself to my level, his face inches from mine. His breath was warm against my skin.

"Will you offer me your life in exchange for your father's?" he whispered in my ear as he traced down the skin on my neck with the cold edge of his gun.

“No… Irene, don't…”

My father's muffled voice cautioned me from where he lay on the floor, beaten to stupor by Diego’s men, but I wasn't in my right mind.

Consumed by fear and despair, I surrendered.

"Yes!”

"Take my life!" I breathed out.

Fear was suffocating me.

I didn't want to die, at least not like this.

But I'd give anything and everything to protect my father. A man who worked several jobs to put me through college.

A man who protected and nurtured me after my mother left, he was all I had.

His selflessness and devotion to our family made him the best father I could have asked for.

But Everything changed with my father, when my elder sister went missing some years back.

We contacted the police, but the investigations led down the rabbit hole. The case went cold after a while, and we were left with nothing, not even a clue if she was still alive.

Her disappearance left a black hole in the family, and my father desperately tried to fill this void.

He turned to alcohol bottles and gambling for salvation, but they only drew him farther from the man he used to be.

I waited for the bullet's impact, my heart frozen in my chest.

But it didn't come.

Instead, the weight of the pistol lifted.

I gasped, a shaky breath escaping my lips.

Diego stood up, towering over me. His eyes raked over my body.

"I won't kill you.”

"That would be too boring.”

“You, my dear, are too pretty to die.”

Relief shuddered through me, I wasn't going to die… not yet.

He had an unsettling look behind his eyes that I couldn't figure out, but it was sickeningly clear that he wasn't done with me.

Whatever he had planned for me could be worse than death.

“You will become my property,” he announced my fate, engraving my deepest fear in stone.

“From this moment, I am your master.”

“You will come when I call, and you will obey me without question, like a dog.”

His strange gaze pinned me to the ground as he dictated, while I bobbed my head, acknowledging every one of his words.

“Understood?”

“Si… si,” I choked out, "I understand.”

"You have tonight to say your goodbyes,” he added.

“My men will come for you by dawn.”

“Be ready!"

Without another word, he stormed out of our apartment into the cold night, his men flanking right behind him.

I rushed to my father's side, pulling off the black bag on his head and straddling his battered body.

He stirred weakly, his eyes fluttering open.

"Irene…" he called out weakly.

“What have you done?”

"I protected you, Papa… I had to," I whispered, tears streaming down my face.

He wheezed painfully, struggling to speak.

“Diego… he’s the devil’s incarnate. You won't survive him. No one does."

"Don't say that," I pleaded, clasping his hands.

"I'll find a way."

He paused, squeezing my fingers desperately.

"I uncovered some Information about Serena.”

"Help me up."

As I supported him into a sitting position, he winced in pain. But his gaze remained fixed on mine, filled with dread.

"Serena's disappearance... it's linked to Diego Vargas," he revealed, the words dropping like a bombshell.

I felt like I'd been punched in the gut.

"What... what do you mean?" I stuttered, my mind reeling as I struggled to grasp what he said.

"He secretly owns the club where she worked.”

“A trusted contact confirmed it. He runs his illegal operations there, underground.”

“We believe he's responsible for whatever happened to her.”

“But he has the police force in his pocket, so there's nothing we can do.”

Something broke inside me.

“I’m sorry, mi hija, you have to save yourself.”

“Run Irene… Find your freedom somewhere far away from here in Barcelona,” he trailed off.

I was speechless, the revelation was overwhelming.

After years of silence on Serena’s case, now I get to hear she was involved with the mafia. Chances of her being alive were slimming down to nothing.

But everything centered around one person; Diego Vargas.

He was a curse to my family.

He had stolen Serena from us, driving a hole in our hearts, and now he was going to finish what he started once he held me captive.

My father would become devastated and drown himself in alcohol.

Diego was ruining my family.

A bitter laugh escaped my lips.

I had to do something.

The strong desire to protect what was left of my family morphed my fears into something stronger.

It was anger, pain, and thirst for justice.

I vowed to find out the truth behind Serena’s disappearance.

If Diego had hurt her or done worse, then I was coming for him.

I would hunt him down like a bloodhound and make him pay in every way I could.

  • The Don’s Captive Bride   Chapter 11: The first Breakfast

I was jolted awake by a blinding light as a maid suddenly parted the heavy curtains, flooding the room with a burst of rays from the morning sun. Diego’s bedroom still felt unfamiliar, but the luxurious bedsheets felt good against my skin. "It's time to get up, ma'am," she said curtly. “Breakfast is almost served. You don't want to keep Lord Diego waiting." I turned my head on the pillow, glancing over for Diego's presence, but the other side of the bed was empty and the sheets were untouched. He didn't sleep in here last night. ‘What kind of husband stays away from his wife on their wedding night?’ I asked myself. Well, it was a forced marriage after all. There was nothing real between us. But he wanted this. He desperately wanted me to become his wife, and now that he’d gotten what he wanted, he disappeared. Strangely, it felt lonely, sleeping on this king-sized bed all by myself. But I was a bit relieved. I couldn't bring myself to face Diego, not after

  • The Don’s Captive Bride   Chapter 10: Lost and alone in his scary world

I didn’t run after Diego, that would’ve been dramatic enough to stop the whole party. I quietly returned to the bar where I sat before. ‘Who was this woman that he talked about?’ ‘This ghost that haunted him.’ ‘And why did he want me to be her?’ My mind was flooding with questions. As I pondered, my heart raced in my chest. I noticed Gomez was still there, at the bar. He wasn’t serving drinks He just stood there, his eyes narrowed at me, watching like a hawk. It almost creeped me out. I needed answers and he seemed like someone who knew things… more than he cared to let on. Things I needed to find out. I confronted him, my eyes locking onto his. “Tell me, what’s Diego’s story, huh?” “You seem to know him more than anyone else, why does he seem so complicated?” I asked, trying to play it cool, but my mind was running wild, desperate for answers. Gomez's expression turned cold, his eyes narrowing into slits as he gazed at me. I expected some explanati

Irene’s POVHe didn't wait for my response. He simply pulled, and I stumbled after him. The crowd parted slightly as we moved, their gazes settling on us, curiously. It was a spectacle, watching lord Diego drag his unwilling bride onto the dance floor.Once we were amidst the crowd, Diego didn't start to dance immediately. Instead, he held my hands loosely, drawing me closer to himself, creating a strange sort of isolation as if we were alone in the room.I wanted to draw myself away, but there was something in his touch that held me captive. Like he put a spell on me.I knew I was caught up a dangerous feeling, but I didn't want to save myself… not yet at least. So I stayed."You look like you'd rather be anywhere else," he whispered in my ears.A smirk appeared on his lips. “And here I was thinking our wedding party would be the highlight of your whole life."I scowled, feeling insulted."What exactly is the highlight supposed to be?" I asked, trying to hide the bitterness in my

After the ceremony at the chapel, we headed back to the estate, with an entourage of guests. Diego was having an after-party at the villa with his associates and close allies, but that was none of my business. I had done my part. I had put on my best performance to please Diego, wearing fake smiles all through the ceremony like a 'happy bride'. Now, the muscles in my jaws were hurting from the strain. I changed from my wedding dress into a red gown and black kitten heels, something comfortable that wouldn't draw too much attention to me. I made my way out to the ballroom where the party ensued. The air inside felt different; the aroma of wealth and privilege was heavy in the air. Everyone in the room was glittering with extravagance, from their outfits to the strong perfumes they wore. It seemed like they all came from old money. I came from nothing. As I stepped in, the loud music and annoying laughter of some women trying to flirt with Diego assaulted m

Irene's POV. After freshening up, I went to the main living room in Diego's suite; he was gone, but the room was alive with a different kind of energy. There were several women, fussing about with my wedding dress and prepping cosmetics for my makeup. Camilla supervised them, making decisions in my stead, but I couldn't care less… it wasn't a real wedding after all. As I entered, the room fell silent, and all eyes turned to me. Camilla's voice cut through the silence, heavy with malice. "Look who's getting married." "I wish your padre was here to see his daughter," she mocked. I swallowed a lump in my throat, resigning to my defeat. “Ladies, make her look perfect for Lord Diego; it's his special day today," she chirped away, like an excited teenage girl. Within a couple of hours, they were done. I stood before the vanity mirror in the dressing room, staring at my reflection. The makeup artists and stylists had just left, but their handiwork remained. They'd

  • The Don’s Captive Bride   Chapter 6: Secretes and Insecurities.

Irene’s POV Drained and disoriented, I woke up to a pounding headache. Fragments of the previous day flashed through my mind as I lay on the bed, admiring the murals painted on the ceiling in Diego’s Bedroom. Memories of the suffering I endured in the dungeon came flooding back, stirring up feelings of despair and hopelessness in me. But as memories of Diego's rescue resurfaced, how he swept in like a knight in shining armor, carrying me to his suite, a bittersweet feeling settled in my chest. The details of the previous night were hazy, but I could vividly recall Diego's unexpected kindness. He had bathed me, washed my hair, and tucked me into his bed. I feared he might take advantage of my vulnerable state, but he hadn't. Instead, he treated my body with respect. This was not what I expected of a ruthless mafia Lord, I wondered if there was more to Diego Vargas than met the eye. I was confused by his actions, but one thing was clear: Diego was a stone-cold devil who

Relief washed over Irene as Diego's deep voice cut through the darkness.“I need to know if you can hear me,” he called out again. She lay there, huddled in a corner, the sound of his voice wrapping around her like a warm blanket, with a promise of salvation. His tone was different. He sounded gentle, and she found solace in that. Her mind quickly recoiled at her reaction to his presence. She wasn't supposed to feel comforted, not by him, not after everything he had done to her. Had her time in this damp, cold cell already fractured her mind? Was she so desperate for human connection that she would cling to the same man who had left her here to die?Irene's thoughts swirled with confusion, but one thing was certain, Diego's presence brought her hope.Something she desperately needed in this moment. She gathered strength, shuffling out of the dark corner of the cell, to face him."Diego...please...let me out. I'm dying." she breathed out, grasping at the iron bar.He paused and for

Irene’s POV. "No!” I protested. “Diego can't… he can't do this!" I insisted, my voice cracking as my panic rose. "He has no right!!" Camilla's lips curled into a cruel smile. "Oh, but he does, Irene. He is Lord Diego.” “And after your little display of arrogance, this is a rather lenient punishment, don't you think?” She tilted her head, feigning concern. “A few days in the dungeon should teach you to obey him as your Lord.” Anger stirred up within me, overshadowing my fear. “Obey?” I spat the word out like shit. “I will never obey that tyrant… that monster!” Camilla’s smile faltered for a second. “You keep running your mouth like this, then you might get yourself into bigger problems.” She said coldly. "Now, are you going to come peacefully, or should I order these men to drag you out?” “What will it be?" I couldn't believe this was happening. My heart raced in my chest as I struggled to accept the reality of my helpless situation. I had to thi

Irene’s POV. ‘There was no way I heard that right.’ "Wife?" I stammered. “I... I don't understand." His eyes narrowed, "Did I stutter, niña?" The floor tilted beneath me. ‘This was utter madness.’ ‘Did he spare my life, only to put me through this?’ ‘Coming here to work for a villain like him was humiliating enough, not to talk of being his wife, sharing his bed… oh, that would be the end of me.’ I imagined his hands, slithering down my body, his cold fingers like claws on my flesh. It made my skin crawl. He was insane to think that I was ever getting married to a monster like himself. "No! I can't do this," I forced out, adamantly. I looked away, unable to hold his gaze, with the same boldness I had in my voice. “You can't do what?” he questioned, his voice rising dangerously. I tried to evade the question. If I was subtle enough, I could somehow deflect his anger and find a way out of this charade. “You could have any woman you desire, why me?” “Thi
