Chapter 1

By the time I, Ellia Levington, returned to the apartment, it was already late at night.

Fenrir Blake had just come out of the bathroom. His hair was still damp.

"Ellia, why are you home so late today?" He asked the question casually, but there was a hint of annoyance in his voice.

I looked at him without saying anything.

Perhaps my expression looked terrible, because for once, he continued asking more questions. "What's wrong? Did something happen?"

"Hmm." I nodded. I was reluctant to say another word.

He clearly hadn't expected such a perfunctory response from me.

After pausing for a second, he said flatly, "Okay. If nothing's wrong, I'm going to bed."

Fenrir fell asleep soon after.

The room filled with the slow, steady sound of his breathing.

He had always been like this. He never cared about my feelings or what was happening to me.

It didn't even matter if our marking ceremony was only three days away.

Thirty minutes ago, I encountered a rogue who had completely lost control.

I was terrified. I kept reaching out to Fenrir through mind-link, begging him for help, but there was no response.

Left with no other choice, I called him.

What I got instead was an impatient reply. "Ellia, don't use a rogue as an excuse to get my attention. I've told you so many times. Don't bother me after ten at night."

If a guard hadn't happened to be patrolling nearby, I might never have had the chance to stand in front of him again.

Not answering any calls or responding to anyone's mind-link after ten at night was the rule Fenrir had established. Even when we were deeply in love, he had never made an exception.

As his fiancee, I had always understood and respected his wishes.

But now, as I stared at his sleeping face, an overwhelming urge to find out the truth rose inside me.

I picked up the jacket he'd taken off and smelled it.

Sure enough, there was a sweet scent on it.

It was unmistakably Mia Lovegood's scent.

I tried to reach deeper into our mind-link, hoping to confirm the answer I already suspected.

I sensed Fenrir's calm, gentle wolf spirit. It was tightly wrapped around the lingering trace of another wolf spirit.

It really was Mia.

She was the pack's healer, Fenrir's mom's apprentice, and the childhood companion he'd grown up with.

All my questions suddenly had answers.

I immediately ended the mind-link. My heart pounded uncontrollably.

Such a deep intertwining of wolf spirits was supposed to be a privilege reserved for fated mates, yet Fenrir had shared that privilege with Mia.

Looking back, I realized how much of a fool I'd been.

Fenrir was the most handsome and strongest werewolf in Blood Moon Pack. He was also the Alpha admired by countless she-wolves.

I remembered how ecstatic I'd been when I first learned that I was Fenrir's fated mate.

Once I finally calmed down, I retrieved the invitation Mario Asher, my mentor, had given me.

He was the director of the Northern Pack's Institute for Ancient Architecture Preservation.

A few months ago, he'd repeatedly invited me to take a long-term assignment there.

At the time, I'd worried that Fenrir needed me by his side, especially on nights of the full moon when he needed my comfort more than usual.

That's why I'd never been able to make up my mind.

But now, everything about Fenrir no longer mattered to me.

This time, I was going to do what I wanted.

I was woken by a phone call in the middle of the night."Ms. Levington? The Alpha's condition is very serious. His wolf spirit is almost fading, but he keeps calling your name. He may not have much time left. Do you want to come see him one last time?"I remained silent for several seconds before reluctantly getting dressed.I really didn't want to go.When I arrived at the healer's den, Fenrir was lying on a hospital bed. His complexion was indeed poor, but his condition wasn't nearly as serious as what I'd been told over the phone. The moment he saw me walk in, his eyes lit up. "Ellia, you came."I stood next to the bed without sitting down. "They said you were dying. Did you deliberately have them lie to me?"He didn't answer. His eyes simply began darting around nervously.I understood immediately and turned around to leave."Don't be so childish. I was just afraid I'd never see you again." He grabbed my hand, and his voice trembled as he pleaded. "Ellia, please. Give me a

Winter in the northern territory felt endless. My work at the institute kept me busy. Every day, I worked on uncovering and restoring ancient structures left behind in the northern territory, translating old manus, and occasionally participating in cross-pack conferences. No one here criticized me for spending my days with books and rocks. Instead, they respectfully called me 'Professor Ellia.'It was fulfilling and satisfying. My injuries were still slowly healing. The trauma caused by the severed mate bond ran deep.Sometimes, I'd wake suddenly in the middle of the night. My chest ached so badly that I could barely breathe. But most of the time, I could feel myself healing.Leaving Fenrir had been the right choice for my wolf spirit. As a result, my recovery began to accelerate. The small apartment Mario had rented for me was warm and cozy.Whenever the sun came out, its light would fill the apartment. In my free time, I'd visit the old bookstores around town and hunt for

The night of the full moon arrived.Without Ellia's soothing presence, Fenrir's injured wolf spirit became unusually volatile. He dropped to his knees in agony, and a low growl escaped from his mouth. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn't suppress it.Sweat soaked through his shirt, and eventually, he collapsed onto the floor. He was completely exhausted. The excruciating pain gradually clouded his consciousness.Amid the endless darkness and torment, Fenrir began desperately missing Ellia. He missed the gentle, reassuring way Ellia used to calm him.If none of those things had happened, they would've already completed our marking ceremony.Consumed by regret, Fenrir eventually lost consciousness. When Wendy and Mia arrived at the apartment, they found Fenrir with his clothes disheveled, his face pale, and his entire body looking utterly worn down.Wendy cried out in shock. "Oh my goodness! Fenrir, how did you end up like this?""What are you doing here?" Fenrir struggle

From Fenrir's point of view, there was nothing he could say or do to stop the bond-severing.The next moment, the bond was severed completely.Fenrir could no longer hold on. His vision went black, and he passed out. When he woke again, he was lying on a bed in the healer's den and surrounded by healers.Mia was trying to force pills into his mouth while Wendy watched him anxiously.A nurse was pressing down on his chest while trying to calm his wolf spirit.Fenrir refused to give up. He tried once again to establish a mind-link connection with me, but he couldn't feel anything. It felt like a part of his chest had been hollowed out. The bond that connected him to me was gone.It was completely severed. Not even the slightest trace of its presence remained. His wolf spirit was howling in agony deep within his consciousness while desperately trying to find that bond again."Fenrir, your wolf spirit is tearing itself apart!" Wendy's expression was grim. "What happened?""It wa

Over the next few days, I didn't initiate a single conversation with Fenrir. I completely treated him as if he were invisible.Strangely enough, it didn't make me feel bad at all. That lasted until the night before our marking ceremony. It was also the night before my scheduled bond-severing.A frantic ringtone came from the living room and woke me.My hearing was exceptionally sharp.Through the half-closed bedroom door, I immediately heard the voice from the next room."Mia? What's wrong?" There was unmistakable urgency in Fenrir's voice.I lay quietly on the bed in the bedroom and listened. From the other end of the phone, I vaguely heard Mia's trembling, tearful voice. "Fenrir, I'm behind the healer's den. There's a rogue–""Don't move! I'm coming!" Fenrir's footsteps were hurried and chaotic. He didn't even have time to get properly dressed. He grabbed his coat and threw it on as he rushed outside. He slammed into the door but didn't seem to feel it.What happened to hi

That weekend, we returned to the main residence.Fenrir was the pack's Alpha, and technically, I still had no right to refuse him.Fenrir's mother, Wendy Blake, was waiting at the door. The moment she saw Fenrir get out of the car, her face lit up with a smile. "Fenrir, we've been waiting for you."When she saw me behind him, her smile faded slightly. "Ellia's here too."I used to care deeply about her attitude toward me, but now, all I wanted was to brush it off and leave.I hummed nonchalantly in response and followed them inside.Mia was already sitting on the couch in the living room. She had on a light purple dress. Her hair was styled perfectly. Clearly, she'd taken great care with her appearance. When she saw Fenrir, she stood up and beamed with a smile. "Fenrir, you're here."Wendy took Mia's hand and sat down beside her. "Mia, come here. Take a look at this."Wendy retrieved a photo album. "This is one of the venues for the marking ceremony.
