Chapter 99 : Softening

The sun was fully up by the time either of them moved off the couch. Morning light lay warm across the living room floor, and neither Ethan nor Marcus wanted to be the one to break the tired quiet they'd finally sunk into after the long night.

"I should feed you," Ethan said at last, glancing at Marcus's closed eyes. "You look like you haven't eaten since yesterday afternoon."

"I haven't." Marcus cracked one eye open. "Babysitting a heartbroken best friend doesn't leave much room for dinner."

The clinic waiting room felt different from the one Asher had sat in on that first terrible night. It was brighter and less cold, with soft blue walls and a fish tank bubbling in the corner. Ethan sat beside him flipping through a parenting magazine with way too much interest, obviously trying to give them both somewhere to put their nerves."You okay?" Ethan asked, looking over."Nervous. The doctor said today's the day they listen for the heartbeat. With the little machine.""The doppler. I looked it up last night.""Of course you did.""I like to be prepared," Ethan said, and put the magazine down as a nurse called Asher's name. They followed her to a small exam room. Asher lay back on the table, and a few minutes later the doctor came in, warm and quick, and squeezed cool gel onto his stomach before pressing a small wand against his skin.Static crackled out of the speaker for a few seconds. Then, faint but clear, a fast, steady whoosh filled the room."There it is," the doctor sa

"You look like you haven't eaten since yesterday afternoon.""I haven't." Marcus cracked one eye open. "Babysitting a heartbroken best friend doesn't leave much room for dinner."Ethan huffed out a tired laugh and pushed himself up. "Pancakes or eggs? Those are the only two things I can make without setting off the smoke alarm.""Pancakes." Marcus followed him into the kitchen. "Obviously pancakes."It was a small kitchen, and they kept bumping into each other in it. Ethan cracked eggs into a bowl while Marcus leaned on the counter and watched him, slow and relaxed, and Ethan felt his chest go warm in spite of how tired he was."You're staring," he said, eyes on the batte

Marcus didn't go home after he left Killian's estate. He drove straight to Ethan's apartment. The sky was still dark and the streets were empty, and his hands shook on the wheel the whole way.Ethan opened the door in a rumpled t-shirt, squinting against the hallway light. He'd clearly been asleep a few minutes ago. "Marcus? It's almost four in the morning. What's wrong?""Can I come in?" His own voice sounded strange to him, thin and worn out.Ethan stepped back right away, the sleep gone from his face. "Yeah. Of course. What happened?"Marcus walked in and dropped onto the edge of the couch with his head in his hands. Ethan sat down next to him, close enough that their knees touched, and waited."I almost told him," Marcus said into his palms. "Tonight. Killian. I almost told him everything."Ethan's stomach dropped. "What happened?"Marcus lifted his head. He looked wrecked. "He got drunk. Really drunk. He was about to drive over to Asher's place and force his way in and demand the

Killian woke a little after three in the morning with his head pounding and his mouth dry. The room was dark except for one lamp turned low in the corner.Marcus was still there, sitting in the armchair by the window, jacket slung over the back, scrolling on his phone."You're still here," Killian said. His voice was rough."Somebody had to make sure you didn't choke on your own regret." Marcus put the phone down. "How do you feel?""Like I got run over. In every way.""Water's on the nightstand. Drink all of it."Killian drank it in long swallows, and some of the fog cleared. He set the glass down and looked at Marcus properly. The night was coming back to him in pieces."I made a fool of myself.""You were in pain. That's different.""Doesn't feel different."Neither of them spoke for a minute. The city outside the window was quiet and dark."Marcus." Killian's voice was steadier now, clearer than it had been at the bar. "I need to ask you a question, and I need a real answer this t

The bar was on a street Killian had never walked down before, in a part of the city where nobody expected to see the Cross name come through the door. That was exactly why he'd picked it.He was on his fourth drink when Marcus found him at the far end of the counter, tie hanging loose, shoulders slumped. Marcus sat down on the next stool."Killian. What are you doing?""Drinking. What does it look like?""It looks like you're trying to drown in a glass, in a place where anyone could recognize you and post it online before you finish your next one.""I don't care anymore." His voice cracked on the last word.Marcus watched him. He'd seen Killian angry plenty of times, cold and quiet in a way that made grown men stop talking. He had never seen him like this. It looked less like anger and more like grief."Talk to me. What happened?"Killian laughed, short and bitter, and dragged a hand through his hair. "Nothing happened. That's the problem. I've spent weeks trying to find out the truth

The door shut behind Julian, and Asher stayed where he was. The containers were still lined up on the counter. His plate was still full. The whole apartment smelled like the food Julian had brought, and for once he wanted none of it.You and I could raise this child. Without him.He kept hearing it. He kept hearing the other line too. He hasn't earned the right to a decision he doesn't know exists. His eyes went to the hook by the door. Julian's spare key was sitting in Julian's pocket right now. Asher had handed it over himself, weeks ago, and it had felt like a nice thing to do. Now he pictured the lock turning at three in the morning, Julian standing in the dark hallway with a bag of soup, and his stomach dropped. He grabbed his jacket and his car keys and left.He didn't pick a direction. He just drove, taking whatever turn came up, until the buildings got shorter and the road ran along the river. There was a gravel lot near the water with no other cars in it. He parked, turned th
