Lila's POV
The soft harm of the restaurant's sweet music filled my ears, but it didn't reach my heart. My hands trembled slightly as I adjusted the napkin on the table, a nervous habit I hadn't noticed until now. It was our fifth anniversary. Five years of love, laughter and promises.. I had prepared everything to perfection, picked out the flowers—his favorite of course. The candles were arranged just right, making the intimate setting I have chosen so beautiful and lively.
The candles were sweet scented and very expensive but they were worth it for this special occasion.
We had made a special reservation in the most expensive restaurants in the city. La Momento was a restaurant for the rich only.
I checked the time again. 8:30 p.m. he had said he would be there by now. Seth never broke his promises and I believed in him, tonight I had news and it wasn't just our anniversary, but I knew this beautiful life changing news would make him happy.
I swallowed down the excitement that bubbled up inside of me. The doctor confirmed it this morning. We were going to be parents! Our first child, after five years of waiting. I couldn't wait to see Seth's face when I told him. He had been so busy lately with work but I knew he had been overjoyed. He was going to be a wonderful father and I had already pictured our little family. The thought made me smile, my heart swelling with love.
But my thoughts were caught short when I glanced at my phone. This was so unlike Seth. No messages. No missed calls. Maybe he was just caught up in something at work.
I texted him again:
Where are you? I have good news.
I pressed send and watched the screen for a moment, willing it to light up with a reply but nothing.
I felt the butterflies in my stomach turning into something darker, feeling like something was actually wrong.
The weight was becoming unbearable and some of the couples who had come to the restaurant at the same time with me were beginning to leave.
Calm down Lila. He will be here soon.
Maybe I was being unreasonable or maybe I was too excited because I couldn't wait to tell him the good news.
I stared at the flowers and the beautiful handwritten anniversary cards a delivery guy had brought to the restaurant.
Just as I made to pick up the card, the door suddenly opened and my heart immediately lept. I stood up, hoping to run into his arms when I stopped.
But Seth was not alone, he walked casually like today meant nothing to him, but the surprising part was that he was with Chloe, my cousin.
And they were holding hands!
My stomach immediately dropped. It felt like the world had tilted beneath me, everything spinning out of control.. I froze, the flowers in my hands suddenly felt like bricks , weighing me down. My eyes bulged in surprise
What was happening? Why were they together?
Seth looked at me and then at Chloe who was smiling at him as if she had just won a lottery. Chloe held him so close and then I saw it, the lipstick on his cheeks.
My chest tightened making it difficult for me to breathe.
“Lila,” Seth's voice was soft and hesitant. “I—”
“Seth, my voice cracked before I could stop it. “Chloe?” I said trying to smile but my lips shook at the sides.
It's been 6 months since I last saw my cousin Chloe and the last time we both spoke on the phone she told me she was getting married this week.
So why was she with Seth?
I couldn't breathe.
“What's going on?” I whispered, my voice barely audible. My eyes darted between Seth and Chloe searching for any sign that this was a kind of misunderstanding or maybe even a prank. But there was none. The way Chloe's eyes avoided mine, the way Seth stood there, too still like a man guilty of something he couldn't undo—it all hit me like a brick.
“Lila, I have been meaning to say this to you for a long time.” Seth began and it felt like he was hiding something from me but I didn't know what it was.
“I don't understand," I whispered , shaking my head. “Why are you two together, it’s our fifth anniversary—”
“I already know it's our anniversary young woman.” Seth yelled, not even allowing me to finish and I was so surprised. He had never yelled at me before.
“I'm tired Lila, I'm tired of this sham we call a marriage. I want out.”
My heart immediately sank and my eyes spun in their socket and I stumbled back as if I had been hit by a tidal wave.
“What do you mean by that?” I stuttered. “Seth, we have been married for 5 years. What is going on please?”
As if that was the answer to my question, Chloe tightened her grip on Seth's hand and gave me a small sardonic smile like she was enjoying my pain.
“I have been pretending for so long and I didn't want to. Look Lila.” Seth began. “ I don't love you.”
My heart stopped.
“ I'm in love with Chloe, your cousin. I love her so much and I'm ready to spend the rest of my life with her.”
If someone had told me that this was the biggest prank ever I could have believed them but as I looked at Chloe and then at Seth, the seriousness on their faces told me otherwise- this wasn't a prank.
“Seth you can't do this to me. What will happen to me?”
I turned to Chloe.
“ Why are you with my husband? You are supposed to be my cousin.”
“Yes," she said and smirked. “I like him and he's mine now.”
I wanted to do something, either to scream or slap her but I was motionless.
I'm still there staring at both of them.
As if it had been rehearsed, Seth pulled something out of his pocket and threw it at me.
“Sign them he said and be fast about it.”
My eyes went to the small piece of project paper and my fingers shook as I lifted it and flipped it open.
I looked up at Seth and my heart broke.
The papers I was holding were nothing but divorce papers.
Selene’s POVThe fight had been devastating and it brought out my weakness which I fought so hard to bury. How could Jason of all people not understand? How could he not see that this untiring pursuit was born from a pain which has reshaped my life?I walked to the window, looking at the city lights. Each one a tiny spark in the darkness. The silence in the apartment was heavy and felt suffocating. My mind which was usually a house of strategic thought was blank and felt broken.A memory just pierced through my mind, amidst the anger and hurt.It was on a faithful summer ten years ago. The air in our small apartment was thick with the scent of cigarettes and unspoken tension. My mother whose face was drawn and weary was on the phone again. Her voice was low and there was a desperate whispering to herself. Another bill and notice to evict. My father who was a shadow of a man just sat in his armchair. Lost in the bottom of a bottle.School was a nightmare. My clothes were always worn ou
Selene’s POVFinding out about Adrian’s connection to Chloe casted a cold shadow over the rest of the wedding event. The lights and music felt hollow. All I could feel was betrayal hovering around me.Jason and I left early and there was an unspoken tension between us on the way.The moment we entered our apartment; all hell was let loose. I threw my leather hand bag on the sofa which landed on its edge.“He is with her Jason!” As I exclaimed with a mixture of anger and fear in my voice. “Adrian. He is one of Chloe’s puppets. And he almost got to me.”Jason sighed while loosening his tie. Concern was written all over his face. “I warned you Selene. I told you he had a reputation. I told you to be careful.”“Careful?” I replied back, my voice now rising. “How much more careful can I be? Every step I take, and every move I make she is there! Plotting and using everyone around me!” My hands folded into fists. “She sent Angela and now it’s Adrian. She is trying to break me down piece by
Selene’s POVAngela’s regular reports confirmed Chloe’s recent desperation which was becoming obvious. Her attempts to shift blame. It was a victory and I knew Chloe was wounded but not yet defeated. On a Friday evening as I was finally rounding a Stressful day of meetings, Jason walked into my office with a small envelope in his hand. He had that particular expression on his face which usually came a surprise.“Formal wear it is,” he said with a playful smile while he handed the envelop to me.I took it with curiosity. The paper was thick cream colored with embossed silver writings. My eyes read through the details. “A wedding? I looked up at him surprised. “Jason this is the event of the season. How was it possible for you to get an invitation?”He smiled and with a low warm sound he said. “Let us just say I have friends in high places. And I thought after all the…excitement… you have been through, a night out would be better. A chance to simply be Selene and not the CEO”.My hear
Selene’s POV“Are you sure about this Selene?” Ruth asked. Her facial expression showing concern, as she looked at the detailed plan laid out on my office table. “A fake product recall? Is it not a little bit aggressive?.”“Aggression is what Chloe understands,” I replied as my gaze fixed on the mock-up of a press release. “She thrives on chaos and manipulation. We are just giving her a taste of her own medicine.”Leon, ever practical chipped in. “The key is making it just plausible enough. Enough to cause panic. But with enough deniability that we can pull back before it truly damages the market.”“Exactly,” I said with cold smile. “We are not destroying her company outright, at least not yet. We are shaking her foundations. We are making her bleed her sponsors.”The plan was carefully crafted. Ruth, with her unparalleled understanding of media cycles and public relations was the one to carry out the plan. We targeted one of Chloe’s newest and supposedly ‘innovative’ cosmetic lines
Selene’s POVThe office was full of energy this Tuesday morning . I was going through the latest projections for my company which was giving that sense of satisfaction. I was still going through the projections when Ruth’s voice came through the intercom.“Selene, Angela is here. She is asking to see you. She said it’s urgent.”My hand paused over the mouse. Angela. What does she want this time. That name has been nothing but memory ever since I found out she was the one who told Chloe about the proposal I wanted to give those new investors. Which I also confronted her based on my evidence.I just hope she is not here to do anything funny. But a part of me pity towards her. But the same time I saw this as an opportunity.Speaking to Ruth over the intercom “Send her in,” I said. I straightened my posture and my expression settling into a cool unreadable mask.As Angela walked into my office my composure almost faltered. She looked… terrible. Her usually glamorous hair was an eyesore. H
Selene POVIt was a sunny afternoon when I decided to visit my old house. The memories of my old life started coming back to me while driving. The house was just standing there like a ghost home. This is the very place my marriage went down the drain. Where Chloe’s betrayal had first taken root and the beginning of where I lost everything. Though It was smaller than I remembered and the paints on the wall were faded. The gardens, a little overgrown.Parking my car across the street, I just stood there and stared at the house. Everything started coming back to me. The laughter in the kitchen and the quiet evenings Seth and I had by the fireplace. The quality time we had in bed. Everything started coming back all at once. And that stupid belief of mine that I have built something real with Seth which was unbreakable.I saw myself standing in that living room with tears running down my face. Reminiscing on the good time Seth and I had together and the promises made to each other. His un
