Chapter 2

작가: Fox C
Anna's trembling stopped for a split second. Then her eyes filled with tears, and her voice was thin and shaky. "I'm not faking, Chloe. I know you hate me, but you can't accuse me of something I didn't do. If my being here makes you so miserable, then I'll leave..."

She tried to stand, only to collapse back into Mom's arms.

Mom held her tighter and stroked her pale cheek, then gave me an icy look.

"Do you hear yourself? Do you know how many times Anna has nearly died? You only just got home, and you're already driving her to an early grave! Did spending 20 years away turn your heart to ice? Don't you have any compassion?"

"Mom, don't blame Chloe. It's my fault for taking her place all these years. Of course she resents me. Please don't let me come between you and your daughter."

Anna's eyes were red, and she played the helpless victim so convincingly she deserved an Oscar.

Mom scoffed. "Mother and daughter? Look at her. Does she act like we're her parents?"

She turned to me. "When Anna heard you were coming home, she worked herself to the bone getting everything ready, worried that nothing would be good enough for you. And after everything she's done, you're still determined to make everyone miserable. I'm starting to think you have a heart of stone!"

I listened as Mom passed judgment on me.

Inside, I felt nothing.

They probably had no idea how spoiled I'd been in my last two homes.

My first adoptive father, Alaric, once heard me mention in passing that I liked the wolf violets that grew in the snowy northern mountains. By the next day, he'd had an entire valley prepared just so I could enjoy the flowers.

My second adoptive father, Lucian, went even further. He told everyone I was the one person no one in Blackstone was allowed to hurt. Anyone who crossed me would make an enemy of the entire pack.

I curled my fingers at my side. Honestly, it was kind of funny.

Neither of those packs was related to me by blood. But once they brought me home, they did everything they could to protect me.

And my own flesh and blood? All it took was a few tears from Anna for them to turn against me, accusing me of being cold and heartless.

"You're right, Mother. I spent my childhood in an orphanage, so I didn't know what family love felt like back then. And I certainly can't pretend to be one big happy family with someone who's taken my place for 20 years.

"If I bother you this much, just send me back."

Dad's face darkened. "Chloe, are you threatening me?"

I shook my head. "It's not a threat. I just don't want you anymore."

Dad was stunned.

He'd probably never had anyone defy him so openly.

Or maybe he'd expected me to beg for forgiveness or throw a fit.

When he recovered, he pulled out a document. "Fine. If you want to leave, sign this. That way you won't come back later and try to take anything from Anna."

The title at the top read, "Waiver of Inheritance Rights."

"No, Dad. All of this belongs to Chloe. I'm an outsider. I don't deserve any of it. Being with you is all I need." Anna turned to me, crying. "Chloe, don't do anything rash. Just apologize to Dad."

Dad looked so eager to cut ties with me that I couldn't help laughing under my breath.

My first adoptive father worried I'd feel awkward taking over the pack's business since I was only adopted. So he pretended to be bedridden for six months.

Lucian was so determined to put me in charge of the gem vault that he locked it, handed me the only key, and declared that it would remain closed forever unless I agreed to take over.

And my biological father? He was so afraid I'd claim what was rightfully mine that he couldn't wait to make me sign away my inheritance.

Ha. So much for blood.

I picked up the pen and signed my name without a second's hesitation.

Then I looked up at Dad with a small smile. "There. I've signed it. But just so we're clear, I've given up my claim to Graycliff. Whatever happens to the pack from now on is none of my concern. If things ever go south, don't come running to me."

I tossed the pen down, turned, and walked out of the room like I didn't have a care in the world.

Three months later, the Graycliff Group was fully liquidated.Dad hadn't been involved in the illegal mining, so he didn't go to prison. But he'd spend the rest of his life paying off the debts he'd personally signed for.Mom moved with him into a cramped old apartment on the edge of Graycliff territory. No more Luna tea salons, no more crowds of attendants. Just a monthly budget where every cent was counted. The pride and standing they'd once prized above everything else, they'd gambled away with their own hands the day they made me sign that inheritance waiver.Ryan's pack stripped him of his place as heir. He'd lost more than our engagement. Everything he'd gained through Graycliff's backing was gone, too. I saw him once on the street after that. He was wearing a delivery driver's uniform, standing in the rain and apologizing to a customer. He recognized my car from a distance, but he didn't even have the nerve to flag it down.As for Anna, she was convicted of money laundering, emb

That night, Mom and Dad knelt outside the gates of the Silver Moon villa.Mom had cried herself hoarse. "Chloe, I was wrong. I let Anna fool me, and I wouldn't even believe my own daughter. Won't you at least see me?"Dad had held his head high for half his life. Now he was bowed low."I'm the one who forced you to sign that agreement. I don't deserve to be your father. If you'll just save Graycliff, I'll give you every asset we have."I stood at a second-floor study window and watched the night rain soak them through. They kept saying how sorry they were, but all they really cared about was protecting Graycliff's assets and saving themselves."Chloe, we're still your own flesh and blood!" When I didn't say anything, Dad finally raised his voice. "You can't just stand there and watch your own pack go under!"I pushed the window open. "You're my flesh and blood. That's the only reason all you're facing tonight is a closed door."Dad went rigid."If you'd been either of the two girls who

The exam was over in less than an hour.Dr. Hayes put the report on the table. "Anna's wolf heart, her wolf pulse, and all her strength readings are normal. Her medical records from the past 20 years only describe symptoms. Not one objective test ever proved she was born with a weak wolf heart. Your private doctors saw how afraid your parents were for you, accepted each staged attack as proof, and kept billing for treatment instead of insisting on a confirming test."Mom stood frozen for a long time."You're not sick?" she finally asked. "All those attacks over the years... You were faking them just to fool me?"Anna lunged for her hands. "Mom, I was just scared that once you found out I wasn't your biological daughter, you wouldn't want me anymore. I was so afraid of losing this family..."Mom shook her off and slapped her across the face."I haven't slept a single peaceful night in 20 years because I was so worried about you!" Her hand trembled. "When Chloe first came home, I was ter

Before the summit was even over, a suspension notice from Silver Moon and a credit freeze notice from Blackstone reached Graycliff at the same time.Alongside the mining suspension, Alaric withdrew the credit guarantee Silver Moon had been giving Graycliff. Lucian froze new credit and raw-material orders, as the contracts allowed. But the Graycliff Group, the pack's company, had depended on both of them to keep its cash flowing. Once that protection was gone, a financial hole hidden for years suddenly came to light.Less than ten minutes after the market opened the next day, shares in Graycliff's publicly traded subsidiaries plunged. Banks and creditors came knocking one after another. The Alphas who'd been toasting Dad just the day before took one look at Graycliff's financial reports and pulled their support too. No one wanted to pour money into a pack with ruined credit and no end to its debts. When Lucian handed me the investigation file, he said only one thing. "Graycliff's proble

"She traded it to me." Anna's lips had gone white. "I gave her a $30 million diamond bracelet for it. She agreed to it herself...""Just because she agreed to the trade doesn't mean you can pass Blackstone's heir's token off as a gift from your father."Lucian didn't raise his voice. He only lifted a hand. Two Blackstone enforcers stepped in at once, one in front of Anna and one behind her, cutting off any way out."The twin-wolf bracelet is registered in the Blackstone vault as Chloe's heir's token. Trading the bracelet didn't transfer that title, and you told everyone here it came from Malcolm. Take it off and apologize to Chloe. Otherwise, the Blackstone pack tribunal can investigate why you passed it off as a gift from your father."He glanced at his watch. "You have 30 seconds. Choose."There was no threat in his voice, but Anna seemed to finally realize what she'd taken. She tore at the bracelet in a panic. The more frantic she got, the tighter the bracelet seemed to get around h

This year, the Full Moon Summit was held on a private island. The parking area outside the private dock was packed with cars from the major packs. Inside the banquet hall, seats were assigned strictly by pack rank.As soon as we arrived, Dad went off to talk business with a few Alphas. Mom took Anna's arm and headed straight for the inner lounge, which was reserved for Lunas.I'd only followed them a couple of steps when Mom stopped. "Go sit over there. The people here are all pack leaders. Don't wander around or cause trouble for Graycliff."She pointed to a small table in the farthest corner, right next to the catering station. It wasn't part of the official seating plan, and the light from the moon-crystal chandeliers in the main hall didn't even reach it.Anna stepped in to explain, her voice soft. "Mom's just worried you're not used to events like this. Once you learn how things work, I'll introduce you to everyone."I didn't call her out. I just turned and sat down in the corner.
