Chapter 3

The next morning, I woke before my alarm.

For a split second, I couldn't remember why.

Then it all came back.

Florence.

Architecture.

The project.

Matteo...

And the strange sense of calm that settled over me whenever I thought of Rafael.

I rolled onto my back and stared at the ceiling.

It was only six o'clock.

A normal person would have gone back to sleep.

Not me.

Whenever I was nervous, or excited, sleep became impossible.

After ten minutes of tossing and turning, I gave up.

An hour later, I was sitting in the Boboli Gardens.

They were almost empty.

That was exactly why I was beginning to love this place.

The city was only just waking up.

The morning air was cool against my skin, and the sun hadn't yet warmed the stone paths. A peaceful silence lingered over the gardens—the kind of silence I rarely managed to find back home.

I settled onto a bench, pulled out my sketchbook, and opened the page with our hotel design.

Something still wasn't right.

I knew it.

I just couldn't figure out what.

I drew one line.

Then another.

Then erased them both.

"Third version already?"

The sound of a familiar voice startled me so much that I nearly dropped my pencil.

I looked up.

Rafael was standing beside the bench.

He looked as though he'd been awake for hours already. His dark hair was still slightly tousled, as if he'd run a hand through it on his way there instead of bothering to tame it. A loose strand had fallen across his forehead, stubbornly refusing to stay in place. Somehow, it suited him.

His sketchbook rested beneath one arm.

In the other hand, he carried two takeaway cups.

"Were you looking for me?" I blurted out.

He crossed the last few steps and sat down beside me.

Close enough that our shoulders were only inches apart.

Much closer than I'd expected.

When he turned toward me, a faint trace of fresh coffee drifted between us.

For a second, I forgot what I'd been about to say.

"I wasn't," he replied calmly.

I realized I hadn't moved at all.

Neither had he.

He simply held one of the cups out to me.

"I didn't know you'd be here."

I accepted it, still trying to understand.

"Then why did you buy two coffees?"

For the first time, I caught the faintest hint of a smile.

"Because I was hoping."

For a moment, I simply looked at him.

Then I glanced down at the cup.

Latte.

Exactly what I'd ordered yesterday.

A smile tugged at the corner of my mouth.

"That's... a little unsettling."

"Why?"

"You remembered what I drink."

"I remember a lot of things," he said quietly.

There was nothing boastful in his voice.

It was simply a fact.

For some reason, that made it even harder to answer.

I took a sip.

The coffee was perfect.

"Thank you."

"You're welcome."

We sat in silence.

Oddly enough, it wasn't uncomfortable.

With Matteo, silence never lasted very long.

He always had something to say.

A new idea.

A new plan.

A joke waiting to be shared.

Rafael treated silence differently.

As if he understood that sometimes words only got in the way.

After a few minutes, he leaned slightly closer to my sketchbook.

"This is what's bothering you?"

He pointed to one section of the design.

I nodded.

"I can't figure out why it doesn't work."

He studied the drawing for a long moment.

Then he reached for my pencil.

"May I?"

I handed it to him without thinking.

His fingers brushed mine for the briefest second.

Warm.

Steady.

Almost absentminded.

Yet somehow my heart skipped anyway.

Rafael looked back at the page.

He drew a single line.

Just one.

Suddenly...

Everything made sense.

I stared at the sketch.

Then at him.

"How did you see that?"

He shrugged.

"I don't know."

His gaze drifted toward the trees, where the first rays of sunlight filtered through the branches.

"Maybe..."

He paused.

"...because you're looking at the building."

His eyes lingered on the landscape surrounding us.

"And I'm looking at everything around it."

I didn't know why, but that sentence settled somewhere deep inside me.

It felt far more important than it should have.

Neither of us knew then that this single difference would one day shape the course of both our lives.

We stayed in the gardens much longer than I'd planned.

Not that I minded.

The truth was...

I'd completely lost track of time.

The sun had climbed higher into the sky, and the garden paths were slowly filling with people.

Tourists unfolded maps they barely understood. Joggers wove between them with effortless determination. Students wandered through the gardens, looking for the same thing we were—a quiet place where the world couldn't reach them for a little while.

Meanwhile, Rafael sketched.

And sketched.

And kept sketching.

I'd never seen anyone work with such complete focus.

He didn't need music.

He didn't need his phone.

He didn't even need conversation.

Just paper.

A pencil.

And whatever was happening inside his mind.

"You really can stay quiet for an incredibly long time," I said eventually.

He didn't even look up.

"Thank you."

I laughed.

"That wasn't a compliment."

"In that case," he replied without missing a beat, "I'll keep it anyway."

For the first time that morning, he looked at me.

There was a quiet spark of amusement in his eyes that hadn't been there before.

"Matteo wouldn't survive five minutes without talking."

"Five minutes?"

This time, Rafael laughed too.

It was soft.

Warm.

It suited him.

"You're right," he admitted, setting his pencil down.

"Two."

"That sounds much more accurate."

Silence settled between us again.

Comfortable.

Unforced.

After a moment, Rafael spoke.

"He likes people."

I nodded.

"I noticed that on the first day."

"And you don't?" I asked.

He was quiet for a moment before answering.

His gaze drifted across the gardens before settling back on me.

"I like specific people."

The words lingered in the air between us.

Something about the way he said them. Calmly, almost absentmindedly… made them feel more personal than they probably were.

For one reckless second, I wondered if he meant me.

My pulse stumbled.

It was ridiculous.

We'd only known each other for a couple of days.

He couldn't possibly...

Could he?

Heat crept into my cheeks before I could stop it.

Don't be ridiculous, Violet.

He hadn't said my name.

He hadn't looked at me any differently.

He hadn't given me a single reason to believe he meant me.

And yet...

I couldn't stop wondering.

The question settled somewhere beneath my ribs, refusing to leave.

If he wasn't talking about me...

Why did I suddenly wish he had been?

And why did that thought make my heart beat just a little faster?

“I thought I was building a future for us.”“But little by little, I was losing you.”His voice caught for just a moment.Only slightly.“And the worst part is that I didn’t realize it until you were gone.”I stayed silent.Because some apologies come too late. And yet they still matter. Not because they can bring anything back. But because they finally close what has been left open.Matteo took a breath. Then he said the one thing I never expected to hear.“I still love you.”The wind swept against the railing. The sea whispered below us.For a moment, the world around us disappeared.“But this time, I’m not here to ask you to come back.”I looked up at him in surprise.Matteo smiled.Tired.Sad.And somehow... free.“I just wanted you to know that I finally understand what I lost.”And for the first time since we broke up, I felt something I hadn’t expected. Not anger. Not pain.Gratitude.Because the man standing before me finally saw the woman I had always been.He had simply seen

Eight months later, the sea was as calm as it had been the day I first saw the property.Everything else had changed. The land was no longer an empty stretch of ground.A building now stood on the hillside above the coast.Exactly as I had imagined it.Stone.Wood.Glass.Terraces descending toward the sea.Light.Space.Peace.It wasn’t the largest project of my career. It wasn’t the most expensive either. But it was the first. The first that was truly mine.On the sign at the entrance stood a single name.VIOLET DESIGNThe first time I saw it formed in metal letters, I cried. Not in front of the guests. Not in front of Rafael.Alone.Because only then did I understand how much I had missed seeing my own name. How many years I had hidden it behind a brand.Behind a company.Behind someone else. The hotel was opening that day.Journalists.Investors.Local officials.Guests.They were all slowly beginning to arrive.I stood on the terrace in a simple pale blue dress. The sea breeze pl

Tomorrow, I still didn’t know what I was going to do.But for the first time in many years, that didn’t feel like a problem.“There you are.”I startled.I hadn’t even heard Rafael return. He stood in the doorway leading to the terrace, a paper bag from the bakery in one hand and the car keys in the other. But he wasn’t looking at me.He was looking at the open sketchbook in my lap.And smiling.Slowly.Almost in disbelief.“It took me three tries to find you.”I lowered my eyes to the pages.“I was only looking through some things.”Rafael placed the bag on the table and sat down beside me.“This isn’t just some thing.”He pointed to one of the drawings.A hotel built into a cliff. The old design. My favorite.“I remember this one.”I looked at him in surprise.“Still?”He laughed.“Violet, you talked about that project for three weeks straight.”I had to smile.“That isn’t true.”“It is.”“Not for three weeks.”“All right.”He pretended to think.“A month.”This time, I laughed alou

He laughed. And I laughed with him.The sea breeze tangled our hair. Somewhere in the distance, a seagull cried out.And I realized that for several minutes, I hadn’t thought about Matteo.Or Bianca.Or the company.I was simply sitting there.Looking at the sea.Such an ordinary thing. And yet I hadn’t known how to do it for years. For the first time in a very long while, I felt something I had almost forgotten.Lightness.Not happiness. It was still too soon for that. The wounds were fresh. The pain was still there. Some nights, I still woke with the feeling that my entire life had fallen apart. But beside the pain, something else was beginning to appear.Space.A place where there had once been nothing but obligations.A place where I could finally hear myself.I looked out across the endless water, and suddenly a thought came to me that frightened and comforted me at the same time.Maybe the end of my life had never really been an ending.Maybe it was a beginning. That afternoon,

I heard Rafael behind me.“I found you.”I turned around. He was smiling.“I thought you might get lost.”I looked around.“I’d probably have to try very hard.”He walked over to me and pointed toward an old olive tree standing a few metres from the house.“My grandfather planted that when my father was born.”I looked at its twisted trunk. It must have stood there for decades. Perhaps an entire lifetime.“It’s beautiful.”“Stubborn too.”I laughed.“I wonder who it takes after.”“No idea.”This time, we both laughed. And as I looked back toward the sea, I realized something strange. In Florence, I was always looking at my watch. Here, for the first time in a very long while, I was simply looking ahead.Inside, everything was simple.Wood.Stone.Large windows facing the sea.No luxury. And yet it felt more perfect than our enormous apartment in Florence.Because this place had something our home had been missing. That evening, we sat on the terrace with the sunset before us.It was s

For a long time, we sat in silence. Then I looked at the city again. At Florence. At the life I had built. And for the first time in years, it occurred to me that perhaps I didn’t need to save everything around me.Perhaps I should begin by saving myself.Suddenly, I realized that for the first time in many years, I was standing at a real crossroads. Not a professional one.A personal one.I could stay.Keep going.Return to the office.Solve projects.Convince myself that time would fix everything. That the pain would pass. That life would eventually return to the way it had been.Or I could do something I hadn’t done in years.Choose myself. The thought terrified me.Because I could barely remember how.For a long time, I sat there looking down at the city.At the rooftops. The lights. The lives of strangers. And I wondered when I had last made a decision simply because it was what I wanted. Not the company. Not Matteo. Not anyone else.Me.I remembered the old sketchbook. The girl
