We were at the dinner table, with the kitchen staff surrounding us in silence. It was one thing to stage a fake dinner in my parents’ small, humble kitchen; it was another thing to be in a real one surrounded by opulence and quiet, almost unbearable politeness.

I could see it in Michael’s eyes. He was putting in so much effort to move naturally like Mark, and he was successful in fooling the staff, but I could see that it was a completely new experience for him.

The only sounds I could hear wer

“So tell us, Blake, how exactly are we going to find her?”“How the hell should I know? You’re the one who should know about it. She said you hired her.”Michael grabbed Blake’s collar again.“No! No! Wait! I swear I don’t know!”“Don’t lie to me, Blake. I paid you to find a woman for the video. I never so much as exchanged texts with that woman.”“Well, I don’t know what really happened, then. One day she texted me and said someone paid her to be in a video with me. She texted me the location and the time, and that was all. The only thing we spoke about when I was in that room with her, about to shoot the video, was the positions and the things we should say. After that she took the camera and left.”Michael was silent but still holding Blake’s collar.“You can beat me to a pulp but you won’t get anything more than that, because that’s what really happened.”Michael pushed Blake to the floor, letting go of his collar.“Alright. We’re going to trust you for now. But if I find out you’

“Great. He escaped,” Michael groaned.I looked around the restaurant and the beach. I couldn’t find any trace of him.“Now what? He might disappear forever. We will never get that press conference,” I said.“Not if I can help it.”Michael took out his phone and called someone. A few minutes later he hung up.“Who did you call?”“Someone in Mark’s contacts. I learned about each and every one of them through his correspondence and I found that this guy can find anyone you want him to and everything about that person too, even their deepest secrets. He said he needs twenty minutes.”“That fast?”“Seems that Mark only hired the best.”***We parked outside the place where Blake Jones was staying, another luxurious resort that was mostly visited by young influencers and hustlers. Michael walked into the hotel with confidence and slight arrogance. The receptionist tried to greet him but he ignored her.“How do you know where the room is?”“The guy told me. He’s that good.”We ended up in a

Michael and I went to an island famous as a haven for lonely executives, call girls, and fame-seeking youngsters. It wasn’t exactly a place I would go to for a memorable experience, but it was exactly the kind of place I expected to find someone like Blake Jones. We checked into the resort under a different name in flimsy disguises: a cap and aviators for him, a sunhat and aviators for me. They were enough to not get us recognized. The receptionist didn’t give us a second look as she handed over the key to a twin room.We went inside and I collapsed on the bed on my back. I thought about Sammy and what he was doing, but I was suddenly interrupted by the sight of Michael. He took off his shirt and pants, not caring that he wasn’t alone. I could see every contour of his chest and abdomen again, clearly this time, as there was no sun on his back like it was on the beach. Suddenly there was a sizable lump in my throat and my chest and lower abdomen became warm.“Why are you naked?” I said

It had been a couple of weeks since Michael assumed the role of Mark. I observed that he had been performing it amazingly well in front of everyone. No one had raised any suspicions or started any rumors and that made me breathe a little easier. The reporters had been relentless, though. They stalked us everywhere we went and camped outside our mansion every day. Michael was even stronger than they were, never saying a word and always keeping his composure whenever they tried to provoke him.He had been busy with work and new responsibilities, but he hadn’t changed from his true self whenever he was only with me and Sammy. He still gave off that carefree energy, which was reassuring. One afternoon after coming back from grocery shopping, I heard sounds coming from Sammy’s bedroom. When I went upstairs and almost reached the bedroom, I heard Sammy and Michael laughing and talking.I peeked into the bedroom and saw Michael carrying Sammy around like an airplane. The image made me all wa

Pepper leapt at Michael and pulled him into a tight hug, her eyes closed and brow furrowed.“Pepper!” Michael said, slowly dragging his arms up around her back.“I’m so happy you’re alive, Mark! I’m so happy! I never thought I would see you again,” Pepper said, her chin resting on top of Michael’s right shoulder. She had to stand on tiptoe.“I’m so happy to see you too, Pepper,” Michael said, his voice polite and reserved.“Tell me it isn’t true!” Pepper shrieked. She pulled away from the hug to face me. “Tell me it isn’t true that you came back to this bitch and made her your wife again!”“Pepper,” Michael said, his voice lowered.“Tell me it isn’t true, Mark. You promised that you were going to make me your wife! Why is she here? Why is she living here?”Michael put his hands in his pockets.“Sarah is going to stay here indefinitely.”“What?!” She shrieked again, her hands balling into fists. “No! I can’t accept that!”I looked away and saw Sammy sitting at the top of the stairs, wa

“So, how was your first day at the office? How was the meeting with the board?” I said in the car. We were on the way to the mansion at noon. Michael decided he only wanted to work half a day.Michael glanced toward the chauffeur. I nodded.“It felt like wearing an old coat,” Michael said in Mark’s voice.I caught my body becoming a little tense and my throat closing up. My mind wandered to the countless rides I had spent with Mark in this car.He responded by reaching for my hand and squeezing it, as if he could sense the change in my body. He then traced his thumb along the lines of my palm. He kept doing it for a while in silence, and my discomfort was slowly replaced with ache.I looked at him, who was staring out of the window. I couldn’t remember if Mark had ever done something like this with me. I didn’t know if I wanted Michael to be the one doing these gestures to me, or Mark. When we approached the mansion I saw a group of people holding cameras and a boom microphone surroun
