View MoreThe city of Gai Wei filled in with travellers, coming from different villages, as they mingled around some carrying heavy loads on their backs. The locals do their daily routines. Creaking sounds of carts are heard, as they pass through inns and markets of the city.
It was a time of festivities so it was normal to see the city fully packed. Lanterns hang freely as the cold breeze touched them one after the other. Children ran around as they chased after the orange and hot anvil lanterns floating in the air. Young misses of the rich families wandered around looking for dresses for the night. Some took interest in hair accessories. The young men were at a close distance trying their chances with these beautiful ladies. Some men on horsebacks moved as fast as they could while shouting for the masses to disperse so that they could pass through. They wore shiny armour which was tainted with blood, carrying bows and arrows on their backs. Their swords were suspended at their sides. They were many for their horses shook the ground frightening those who were near watching them. Some were hoping to be one of them in the near future. Some looked at them with faces filled with hatred and some remembering the sad encounters with them. As they were moving away from the crowd, one of the people started, "they are finally back after a whole month of fighting, I am sure they won. After all, victory is always on our side as long as the hound is amongst them." "Hound?" The other surprisingly asked. Unknowingly staring at the man leading the army. He had no expression as such he did not look sideways like the other men. He would hit his horse here and there to increase its speed. "You don't know? Which world are you living in? It is our famous general who was enlisted at the age of eighteen after defeating several armies at war. He is said to possess the form of a hound when fighting. Some say he has never been scratched by a single soul." "So he keeps clean. Sounds like a neat freak to me," the other man interjected as he continued to watch the back of the man on the horse who was so eager to reach the palace before sunset. He was weary of being late and dealing with the old man was tiring. He also could not stand the stench of blood on his body. He wanted to take a bath and rest for a while. "General, we need to care for the injured. Wu and I will stop by the physician's manor to get them treated." The man beside the general lamented. He slowed down his horse leaving the general on his own. When he neared the palace gates, he slowed down for the guards to open it for him. He passed them and headed towards the inner palace. The palace was so spacious and strict. When he was walking he could see the maids bowing his way portraying the palace etiquette. "General Xue Han is here to see your majesty," he called, letting the eunuch open the door for him. Inside this imperial hall, there an old man sat on the golden throne beside him was his favourite Consort Hui, who was feeding him tangerines like a baby. Sometimes, Xue Han wonders why this old man was his rumoured fierce emperor of the West. "General Xue, welcome. I heard you have defeated those barbarians. What do you want from this old man to grant you? Eighty gold pieces? Women? Name anything." "This servant sees it better if you would grant me a house of my own, your majesty." Xue Han replied as he bowed to the man who was now laughing at his loyal subject. The general had long wanted a house of his own. He was getting tired of changing cities each and every time he was sent on missions. Every time he had to find an inn where there would be a lot of noise from the other people. He hated loud places the most. So this was a chance given to rob this stupid emperor of his riches after all he sacrificed his life too many times. "Sure, I will do as you say. You look a mess go and have some rest, general." The emperor dismissed him. He turned to look at his concubine and got busy kissing her with so much love. Xue Han rose and vacated his majesty's chambers and when he was outside he looked back feeling used for this man's gain before riding his horse and exiting the palace. He stopped at the Xing Inn where he took one of the rooms and bathed for some time and slept for a few hours. It was early in the morning when he was awakened by loud noises in the next room. "Women," he snarled lowly whilst he got up putting on his outer gown. Two voices of women argued. And this didn't get so well to the man who so loved his nap. He took his sword which he had laid on the wall the night before. He then opened the door to greet the intruders. He searched to see what was truly happening at this point in time. He watched as one of the women neared the other pouring water on the head of the other woman who stood idly and stopping her maidservant who wanted to help her master. "Min, you slut what were you chattering about with my lord! Can't you leave him alone? He doesn't love you ...." She kept blubbering nonsensical things before she prepared to pour yet another bowl of water. Xue Han looked at the other girl who was now raising her head high with eyes that could freeze an ocean. She lazily pulled her long black wet hair at the back of her neck revealing her pale white skin and sharp features which had earned her name: little beauty Cheng. Every young man at that moment was entranced by her beauty and that small gesture except the general who had an indifferent look. "Sister, what have I done for you to treat me like this? Which lord are you talking about? I was all alone. If you mean the Lord I dined with yesterday. Then no need to worry I... wait what's it to you if he was with me tonight? Do you perhaps have feelings for him?" The sister was surprised to see her standing up for herself. She had got used to bullying her at home and she felt happy to see her little sister away from home for a long time but when she came she had the nerve to invite her lover for lunch that afternoon. Getting annoyed she stretched her arm so to slap Min on the face but she was blocked by the little girl that had gained some guts these past months. "Get your filthy hands out of my face sister if you still want them intact." She threatened with a strong voice that meant war. She threw her hands aside and continued glaring at her. The general was getting more and more irritated to the point where he didn't realize he was walking towards them before pointing his sword to a certain someone's neck. "Stop all this drama and get to your homes little girls," he ordered the two women who noticed him now at this very moment. The two women wondered who he was pointing at with his sword."No. Nothing happened. Don't worry too much." Cheng Yan persuaded her, while caressing her hair, desperate to distract her from asking him any more questions. He did not want to mention what the other man had just asked him, so he chose to keep it to himself. However he knew too well that his little sister wouldn't let it go. That's why he stroke her hair in an attempt to please her. She really loved it when he did that. He had used this method to coax her many times. "Gege, stop it. I know when you are trying to distract me." Cheng Min complained and watched as her brother blushed with embarrassment and then hurried her to go inside the house in case she got too many sun burns. "Be careful or else you will look ugly and no one will want to marry you." He shouted after her. She turned to face him and made a silly face before running away and entering their room. Cheng Yan then stood up from his seat and walked away. He needed some time to himself. It was just too much to think when
A few months have passed after his last visit to the siblings. Xue Han found it hard to face them. Especially the woman who couldn't stop popping in his mind. At first he blamed it upon the tea he drank that day but later on he just couldn't keep at it at all. The mighty general managed to sort out his feelings and decided to act upon his heart. Once he woke up, he made his way to the closest stream and took a quick bath in the cold water. He didn't feel the coldness at all for he had grown up in this kind of environment when he was doing his training. And with years he had gotten used to it. His body looked good and was well built due to the work out he had been doing almost all his life. When he was done. He changed into a dark purple robe with beautiful bamboo leaves drawn at the helm. He plaited a handful of hair at one side and tied the rest into a pony. Some were left at the front where it fell into a pretty fringe. When he was satisfied with his look. He got onto his war ho
The general took a sip of his tea before bringing it to his nose letting the steam enter his nostrils. He wanted to make sure if it was the same as his late mother's. To his surprise everything was just similar, the taste, the temperature and the amount of sugar put into it. He gently put the cup down and looked at Cheng Min. "Where did you learn to brew this tea from?" He asked desperately trying to find some clues. Cheng Yan was confused, this was just ordinary tea, anyone could make it. Cheng Min also thought the same. No one had taught her any skills in brewing tea. She just made it randomly. "Nowhere. It's simple. Do you want me to teach you how?" Cheng Yan answered back, she honestly wanted to help him. "No thanks. It just reminded me of someone." Xue Han answered softly. He remembered her soft smile and delicate facial features. When he looked up from staring at the image in the tea he was greeted by Cheng Min's face which was smiling widely at her brother who was refilling
Xue Han was left in a very bad mood. He clenched his fists tightly, his nails digging deep into his palm. His hand ended up dripping with a trail of blood. All that filled his mind was the way Cheng Yan behaved with him right now. He knew for sure that he was the one who had stolen the supplies. Xue Han wasn't so sure on how he had managed to do it. He laid his back on his chair and rested his head on the palm of his hand. After seeing a pile of reports waiting on the side of the table he picked up a few and started to go through them. It was after a shichen when his deputy came to seek him. He was a little on urge, while informing him on what the crown prince had ordered. Upon hearing Wang Fu mentioning the sibling's names in his report, General Xue Han felt his emotions shoot but he still remained calm. "I will see what I can do about it." Xue Han finished their talk. He stood up and exited the tent. The first thing he did was go to the tent with the supplies to check if anythi
While sitting in a cold dark room, Cheng Yan looked through the bars that was restricting his freedom. He wanted to check if the guards were still on their shift. When he found no one he rose quietly not wanting to disturb his little sister's sleep. After checking to see that she was sleeping comfortably, he turned away and took a few steps toward the small window where some moonlight was entering through. He whistled softly for a couple of times and stopped as if he was waiting for something to appear. In a while, he heard flapping sounds as if something was approaching him. A white pigeon landed on the window seal, on it's leg there was a small pouch where he put on a letter he had written during the day. He was fortunate because he always travelled around with paper and ink which he would hide somewhere in his clothes. He was also lucky because when the guards searched him they didn't find it on him. After successfully putting the small piece of paper on the bird, Cheng Yan spoke
Cheng Yan knew that if he made any careless moves then he would be dead so he did as he was told. "Turn around slowly." The other kept on demanding as he tightened his grip on the sword bringing it closer to his neck. Cheng Yan felt some pain on where the sword had cut. He brought up his hand and pressed on the wound to stop the bleeding. Whilst he was doing all that he also turned around not wanting to aggravate the attacker more. If looks could kill he would have died the moment he took in the image of the man standing in front of him. He was very handsome and looked very cool with the way he was handling his sword with a cold air around him. Cheng Yan took in his image as if he was drinking water. Even his Adam's apple was dancing to every saliva he was gorging down. The wound was long forgotten. When the man noticed him being like that, he scowled. He had never met such a shameless person before. After all, everyone feared him except that little girl he met at the inn. When h
