Chapter Seventeen: Sage Losing It

  Why did I do that? Why couldn't I be honest, for fuck sake? She is my mate. Lee hasn’t said a word, not even a fucking growl. Nothing. He is so pissed off at me. I should go to her, tell her the truth, and maybe, just maybe, I can date her secretly. No one would know. Maybe that will work.

  I get my cell phone out to look at her picture again. What the hell 17 messages and they're all from the same person. Vanessa. Damn, I don't bother reading them. I just deleted them all and block her number. Enough, she has a mate. Guy Patterson. He seems very caring and understanding. He acknowledged Vanessa as his mate straight away. Why couldn't I do that? What is going on with me? I'm such an asshole. Why couldn't I be honest with everyone, including Mandy? 

  "I can't stop thinking about her….Lee." I mind-link Lee, hoping for a response.

  "Yeah, asshole, me neither. Our mate hates us thanks to you. You fucked things up with our mate. Fucker. It would help if you stopped thinking about what others think. You crushed on her for years, so what is your deal? Fix this shit now because until you do, I won't be talking to you." Lee growls at me. He's so pissed off with me right now. I don't think he will ever forgive me until I sort things out with our mate.

  The next morning, I get in the shower all the time, thinking about the night before. I couldn't get her out of my head. I can still taste her on my tongue, so delicious.   "Oh well, I was at the movies with Vanessa," I said, trying to hide my anger from my mom.

  "You do know she's no good for you. I heard something about her, and I'm pretty sure she isn't your mate, so let her go. It's a shame you and Amanda aren't together." My mom says, not knowing that I already ended it with Vanessa and that Mandy is my mate.

  "You know I don't like her. She's normal and weak." I say defensively.

  "Why are you like this? What did poor dear Amanda ever do to you?" My mom says, with a smirk on her face. My dad looks at me, smirking. What's going on with the two?

  "I need someone strong. Too bad Vanessa has a mate. I found out last night at the sushi place. Amanda was there with two guys. Yeah, now, who is bad? Anyway, I gotta go. I'm going to be late for school." I say, trying to throw them off. My parents stare at me in shock, from what I just said about their best friend's daughter, Amanda.

  "Anyway, love you guys," I say, waving to them as I leave the house, going to my truck. I still can't stop thinking about my situation. I'm trying to figure out if Amanda would go for a secret relationship. Obviously, I would have to date other she-wolves to keep up appearances. I hope she understands. I want her so bad. I wanted to sneak into her room again last night to watch her sleep, but I pushed the urge down.

  As I'm driving to school, I decided to take my mind off it all by listening to the radio. Just as I turn it on, this song starts playing, 'I hate you, I love you. I can't help but listen to the lyrics, and I'm going to be doing the same shit to her when I talk to her. Maybe I should leave her alone and see where it goes. Wait, I still need a date for the dance tonight, maybe another she-wolf. I pull into my usual parking space, and it has my name on it because I'm the next alpha. Whoever I'm dating always has the space next to me, which at the time was Vanessa. What the fuck was I thinking? As I walk towards the school, I smell her, and she's nearby. I spot her with Duke and Guy.

  "Oh man, check out Amanda. The way she's got her hair in an updo and wearing that dress, WOW. What a knockout." Kyle says, walking beside me. I growl and glare at him, thinking to myself, MINE.

  "Fucker. I told you, didn't I? You will fuck it up." Lee mind-links me laughing. I watch as Vanessa walks up to Mandy. Oh shit! What is she gonna do? Is it because of Guy's there? Is it because of me?

  I listen in, and she's accusing Mandy of trying to take her mate. Guy just grabs her hand and walks her away to talk privately. I'm so glad she took my advice. It's for the best. Mandy just carries on talking and laughing with Duke, and she doesn't seem bothered by Vanessa. Duke starts whispering to Mandy and pointing over to the restrooms. I look to see that he is pointing at some guy who is calling her over to him. She nods and walks over willingly. What does he want with my mate? I've got to hear this.

  "Hi, I'm Gabe. Would you honor me by accompanying me to the dance tonight?" Gabe asks her. What the fuck? I'm about to lose my shit and walk over there when suddenly….

  "I would love to, Gabe," Mandy says while looking straight at me, smiling.
