"I found the death certificates,” he said softly.

He reached out for her shoulders and laid his hands on them gently.

“I know it’s nowhere near the same thing. James is fine now, he’s great actually. He married a good woman and got the crown that was always supposed to be his. He’s happy.”

Aaron turned her around slowly.

“I can’t imagine waking up to all of these people in my life just being gone, to James being gone again.”

She was looking down, the tears flowing readily.

“And I know this didn’t start out the way it’s supposed to, that you don’t trust me, I get that. So if you really want me to take your clothes off and blow your mind in that bed, if you want to use my body for the night, if that’ll make it hurt even just a little less.”

Aaron started unbuttoning his shirt with one hand, his other hand on her chin as he lifted her face to his. He wiped away her tears as their tear filled eyes met, his shirt falling open as he reached the last button.

Keira felt the tension in the air just as her siblings did. Some of the world's greatest killers were assembled in the heart of what was once Absconditus, on the border of Imperium and Venatores. There was enough bad blood flowing between the founding families of the House of Assassins to drown all of Warlanda. And yet, even just a glimpse of Aaron was like finding him in that restaurant one and half years ago all over again. Brand new sensations. Life breathed back into her. Their last names meant that they were born on opposite sides, destined to kill each other. Nothing could erase that. Rivers of blood flowed beneath the bridge that connected them. Still, the way her aching heart yearned for him was irrefutable. "This is happening. We're all just going to have to get the fuck over it," said Keira, clasping her shaking hands behind her back as she and Aaron took their first steps away from their siblings, towards each other. Unreadable eyes looked her ove

Twelve years ago(Caines, Terres Somnia)"Again," said Mary. Aaron's eyelids were falling closed. They'd been at it for hours. Firing a gun wasn't like reading thick books or learning five different instruments at the same time. Nor was it like spending endless hours on puzzles like Sudoku, Scrabble or Go all while trying to master the language of the year. This year it was Japanese. Last year it was Spanish. Who knows what Mary would pick for next year. No, firing a gun was his least favorite extracurricular activity his mother forced down his throat. At thirteen, Mary often boasted that he was already the smartest, most talented man she knew. Certainly smarter than his father, Earl Henry. Only when it came to his combat training did Mary not push the issue. Until now. "Mama," he groaned. "Please Mama. No more." "No slouching!" Mary snapped, coming up behind him to reposition his stance. "Remember now, you're not a future pr

Aaron had been so focused on telling Henry to fuck off, that he missed Emily showing up entirely. Turned out, Henry wasn't the last person Aaron wanted to see after all. "Very well," said Henry, turning to leave. "For what it's worth, I'm sorry Aaron. For everything I cost you. For everything you lost in my name. Whatever you think about my preferences about my children, you were my heir, Aaron. In many ways, you still are. I'm so proud of the way you carried yourself in the last six months. When even Troy couldn't interfere, you put everything aside to step up. You were every bit the king I always wanted you to be. Strong. Smart. Effective. Decisive. A born leader. I only came to tell you it's okay to have what's in that envelope. The crown won't force anything else on you, but if you want it, it's yours. Rest, my son. Be happy." With that, Henry walked away, leaving Aaron and Emily alone. "The fuck are you talking about? I'm about to

2021, August 29th(Venatores, Warlanda) (Aaron) Aaron stared solemnly out at the border between Venatores and Imperium. Not one month ago, fights were breaking out at this very border. People were angry. Madz's death. All the seat number 12s that fell before her and then Lilith and Kendall biting the bullet the way they did. It was enough to start rogue fights in Imperium and Venatores alike, destabilizing both cities. The problem was Venatores wasn't intervening. The House of Assassins was working overtime to try and contain the situation, but it didn't mean shit until Grayson, new Duke of Venatores, stepped up and addressed the matter formally. As matters stood, all Aaron could do was keep a vengeful, grief-stricken Grayson from declaring full out civil war against Imperium. Gone was the love sick Grayson who would do anything for Keira. In his place was a drunk with too much power suddenly thrust upon him. It was hard to believe th

2021, February 23rd(Venatorres, Warlanda)Keira was stealthily making her way through the familiar hallways of the Hunter residence, careful to keep to the shadows and go unnoticed until she happened upon an unexpected intruder. "I come in peace," said Sam Greene, his hands held up in surrender as Keira stuck a gun in his face. "I'm here to invoke rule number 99 and to help."Sam gestured behind him, where the armed guards of the residence awaited his command. "I hardly think clemency is the first thing on your mind. You released Madz's killer so that she would come after me," said Keira. "After Madz had my father killed to protect you. You can see how I might hold a grudge," said Sam in a controlled voice. "Duke Greene was hardly innocent," Keira countered. "Ancient history," Sam said with a shrug. "At present, we're sitting ducks if we don't keep moving. I put everything on the line to help you take the

Last Call was the twenty-four hours before Imperium would cut off contact with the entire world, shutting itself in to host The Table's Assembly. For the very first time in Warlandian history, the Table's Assembly would symbolize peace instead of impending war. No country would be selected for war under the guise of friendship. Instead, the founding families of Warlanda would come together to pledge allegiance to the new queen of assassins and her campaign to put the Warlandian Wars to bed for good. "You may not like your new found popularity, but that isn't stopping them from looking," said Kate, tauntingly swaying back and forth as she sipped on her glass of champagne. "Especially that puppy. Hey handsome," Kate purred, waving flirtatiously at the man across the room. Keira made a grab for Kate's hand, forcing it down before coming to her senses. She raised her ducked head and her eyes met with his across the room. The man chuckled, his cheeks coloring
