Syria’s POV

I didn’t know how long we’d been driving, but when the car finally stopped, it felt like I’d been holding my breath the entire time.

The tires crunched to a halt on the dry gravel road, and everything went quiet.

“Why are we stopping?” I asked, doing my best to sound calm. My heart, though, was racing like it knew something I didn’t.

Not peaceful-quiet. Just tense, unnatural quiet, the kind that made your skin prickle.

I glanced at Bennett from the corner of my eye, trying to read his expression. His jaw was tight, but he didn’t look alarmed. That made me more nervous, not less.

He didn’t look at me when he answered.

“We’re just taking a break. The guards need to rest. You stay here, I’ll take care of everything.”

He didn’t give me time to respond. The door opened, then slammed shut behind him.

A second later, I heard the lock engage, leaving me sealed inside. I stared at the window, my reflection barely visible in the glass.
