The sun was shining brightly, warming Hayden and Krista as they strolled to the park. They carried their breakfast bowls, still steaming, taking occasional careful bites as they walked. Krista led Hayden to a bench at the edge of the park, where they could watch the ducks swim and dive in the pond as they ate and waited for Ian and Darcy to arrive.

Hayden's brow furrowed as he watched the ducks on the pond. A few were white or black-and-white, but most were black, flashing green, blue, and eve

  • The Guardian Rogue   Chapter 44

Mason was still in his office when he received the call from Alpha Andrew and Beta James from Krista’s old pack, Blue Mountain. What they told him had set his teeth on edge. He had witnessed the Werewolf High Council prosecute people with far less evidence and no confession than what they had on Justin Smith. The only time he had seen deals cut, the suspect worked for the Council, either as an investigator or a star witness in a much bigger case. Even then they imposed some form of punishment, not total freedom and immunity. Knowing what had been done to Krista, Mason hated to think of what was so much bigger that Justin would be freed without any punishment. He logged back into his computer and almost immediately had a message pop up showing he had a new email from the Werewolf High Council. Mason opened it and shook his head as he read it. The email confirmed everything that was said in his conversation with Blue Mountain. Mason pulled his phone from his pocket and dialed Liam, t

  • The Guardian Rogue   Chapter 43

Alpha Andrew was scowling at the man sitting across from him at his desk. When the situation with Justin Smith kidnapping Krista Jones had first unfolded, he had been reassured by the Werewolf High Council that Justin would be dealt with harshly, and with the most severe punishment being doled out as quickly as possible. Then he was called and told things had changed, and they were not sure the evidence supported that decision. That change had been bad enough, but now, he could hardly believe his ears. Now a council representative, by the name of Victor Trask, was sitting across from Alpha Andrew, saying they were not sure any charges would be brought against the man, and it would be up to each individual pack to handle things. Since nothing other than the planning of the crime had taken place within his pack, Alpha Andrew's hands were tied when it came to anything involving the assault on Krista and her abduction. He let out a slow, measured breath to maintain his control, then said

Hayden had taken some time to think about what to tell his brother before mind linking him. During that time, he removed his socks and shoes and placed them near the fire to dry with the other clothes. As he fed more branches into the fire, he looked at Krista. She was still shifted into her wolf, Lola, and was sound asleep, stretched out on her side. Darcy and Ian were still snuggled against her, sleeping soundly. He opened a mind link with his brother and nudged him to open it. He hoped that Harrison would not think there was a problem or become worried. "What's up? Don't tell me the kids fell in the creek," Harrison said through the link. "No. The kids did not fall in. Krista and I did. The bank had been undercut by the rains a few months ago. We didn't know about it, and the bank collapsed under us, dumping us into one of the waist-deep eddies," Hayden explained. "I was joking, but seriously, are you guys OK?" Harrison asked. Hayden gave a lopsided grin at his brother's conc

Hayden ambled down one of the trails in the woods that led to the creek. Darcy and Ian walked with him, bolting ahead and then darting back to him before running ahead again. Krista was happy to walk behind them, watching the kids play with their Uncle and how he was always happy to interact with them and answer their questions about what they found on the walk. Krista was happy to help watch the children for the day. It had given her a chance to get to know Hayden's sister-in-law, Nyla. She found Nyla delightful and looked forward to seeing her more in the future. Harrison still intimidated her. As the pack Alpha, he radiated a power and authority that Krista was not used to. Thankfully, his upbeat, often laid-back personality put her at ease. Hayden was an Alpha, but he did not have the same aura as Harrison. She wondered if that had something to do with the bracelet he wore to hide that he was a rogue. "Aunt Krista! Look what we found!" Darcy yelled as she ran back to where Kri

When Hayden and Harrison emerged from the woods, Krista and Nyla sat together on the bench, talking and laughing as they watched the kids feed the ducks. Nyla beamed as she waved to Harrison, and he waved back. She leaned over to Krista and grinned at her. "Told you they will always come back to us," Nyla whispered as she kept her eyes fixed on Harrison. Krista said nothing, but the words made her smile. She had spoken with Nyla before, but today, she was getting to know her Luna. Nyla was showing herself to be sweet, kind, and welcoming to Krista, not only as a new pack member, but as a member of her family. "Have they fallen in yet?" Harrison asked, motioning toward Darcy and Ian by the pond. "No, but Darcy has claimed one of the ducks as hers and has been carrying it around. He seems rather pleased with the arrangement. He fell asleep in her arms," Nyla said, still smiling. "She mentioned taking it home with her, but I said that we had to discuss it with you." "If someone cle

Hayden's brow furrowed as he watched the ducks on the pond. A few were white or black-and-white, but most were black, flashing green, blue, and even purple as the sun hit their feathers. He had seen a lot of ducks over the years, but he had never seen any quite like those. Krista giggled beside him, making him turn to look at her. "Why do you look so confused?" she asked. "The duck," Hayden said flatly. "I know that they aren't wild, and I have never seen any like them before. They are gorgeous." "Luna Nyla said they are Cayuga ducks. She specifically chose them to put on the ponds and lakes here in Blood Moon. They lay a lot of eggs,
