The Shadow of Duty

I stood at the edge of the training grounds, wrapping my hands in worn leather straps. The morning air was cold and sharp, pulling at my lungs every time I took a deep breath. Across the field, warriors were sparring, their heavy grunts and clashing swords echoing off the high stone walls of the Silver Moon packhouse.

My name is Elena Vance. To anyone walking past, I was just another warrior trainee working in silence. But to the elders, I was a living reminder of sacrifice.

Eight years ago, my mother gave her life on a bloody battlefield to save our pack’s Luna and her young son, Kai. My father took a blow meant for the Alpha himself, an attack that shattered his spine and left him paralyzed from the waist down. They were Guardians, elite warriors born with a sacred bond to protect the royal lineage at all costs.

Because of their bloodline, everyone expected me to follow in their footsteps. I was destined to become the personal Guardian for Kai when he officially took over as Alpha.

There was only one problem. Kai didn’t even know who I was.

I watched him across the field. Kai was tall, broad-shouldered, with dark hair that fell over his brow and sharp amber eyes that seemed to look through everyone. He was moving effortlessly against two senior guard trainees, disarming them both in a matter of seconds. Cheers broke out among the onlookers.

Kai wiped sweat from his forehead and tossed his wooden practice sword to the ground. He didn't look in my direction. He never did. To him, I was just another shadow in the crowd, another face among the hundreds in his territory.

"You're staring again, Elena," a quiet voice said beside me.

I turned to see my father sitting in his wooden wheelchair. Despite his condition, Mark Vance still carried the steady, proud posture of a true Guardian. His dark hair was silvering at the temples, and his eyes held a mixture of deep love and unspoken worry.

"I'm not staring, Dad," I replied, tightening the strap around my left knuckles. "I'm analyzing his footwork. If I'm supposed to guard his back one day, I need to know how he moves."

My father let out a soft, low sigh. He reached over and gently tapped my arm. "Elena, you don't have to carry the weight of your mother's memory on your shoulders every single day. The Alpha bloodline is strong, but your life belongs to you."

"Mother gave her life for them, Dad," I said quietly, looking down at my wrapped hands. "You gave your legs. I have to finish what you started. It's the only way to honor what our family lost."

"A Guardian’s path is paved with sacrifice, my child," he whispered, his voice tinged with sadness. "I only hope you find something worth living for, not just dying for."

Before I could answer, a loud horn blasted from the main gates of the pack territory. The sudden sound cut through the noise of the training ground. Conversations stopped instantly. Warriors dropped their weapons, instantly on high alert.

Three long blasts. That meant visitors—uninvited, high-ranking visitors.

I stepped closer to my father’s chair, placing a hand on his shoulder as the heavy iron gates swung open. Dust kicked up from the road as a convoy of polished black SUVs pulled into the courtyard. On the doors was a crest painted in crimson and gold: the crest of the Bloodfang Pack.

The Bloodfang Pack was our largest neighboring territory. They were fierce, wealthy, and ruthless in battle. Their Alpha, Lucian, was notorious across the northern territories for his brutal strength and sharp mind.

The door of the lead vehicle opened, and a tall man stepped out. He wore a dark leather jacket over a simple black shirt, but his presence dominated the entire courtyard instantly. He had sharp, chiseled features, raven hair cut short, and eyes as cold and blue as ice.

Alpha Lucian.

Beside me, my father’s breath hitched. I could feel the tension ripple through the air as every warrior in our pack straightened their spines.

Our current Alpha, Alpha Thomas, stepped forward from the packhouse entrance, flanked by Kai and two elder councilors.

"Alpha Lucian," Alpha Thomas said, keeping his tone carefully neutral. "We did not expect you until the regional summit next month."

Lucian smiled, though the expression didn't reach his intense blue eyes. "I felt no need to wait, Alpha Thomas. Formalities only slow down progress. I am here to discuss our territory borders... and to settle a personal matter."

Lucian’s eyes scanned the crowd of warriors gathered around the yard. He wasn't looking at Alpha Thomas. He wasn't looking at Kai, who stood with his jaw clenched and hands balled into fists.

Lucian's gaze moved slowly across the ranks until it landed directly on me.

I froze. A sudden shiver ran down my spine. His intense blue eyes locked onto mine with an overwhelming weight, as if he could see straight into my soul. There was a sudden, electric pull in the back of my mind, a strange sensation that made my heart hammer against my ribs.

"What is he doing here?" I whispered under my breath.

My father’s hand gripped the armrest of his wheelchair tightly. "Stay back, Elena," he muttered in a low, panicked tone. "Don't attract his attention."

But it was already too late.

Alpha Lucian took three heavy steps toward my side of the courtyard, ignoring the tense murmurs of the surrounding guards. He stopped just ten paces away from me, his sharp gaze fixing on my face.

"I came here to make an offer," Lucian said, his deep voice carrying clearly across the silent grounds. "A treaty that will unite our packs forever."

Kai stepped forward, his voice cold and laced with warning. "Whatever treaty you want, Lucian, you discuss with my father and me in the council chamber. You don't walk into our training grounds like you own the place."

Lucian finally turned his head slightly toward Kai, a dangerous smirk playing on his lips. "Ah, young Prince Kai. Still so quick to anger. But this matter involves someone specific."

Lucian turned back to me, extending a hand in my direction.

"I want Elena Vance," Lucian announced calmly. "She will return with me to the Bloodfang Pack as my Luna."

Silence fell over the entire courtyard like a heavy blanket. Nobody moved. Nobody breathed.

My heart stopped in my chest. His Luna? I had never spoken a word to Alpha Lucian in my entire life.

Kai stared at Lucian in absolute disbelief before his gaze snapped over to me, looking at me truly for the very first time. His amber eyes were wide, filled with shock and a sudden, dark fire.
