The Council of Shadows

The Great Hall was lit by dozens of flickering iron chandeliers hanging high overhead. The council of elders sat behind a long, curved oak table at the front of the room, while rank-and-file warriors filled the stone benches along the perimeter.

I stood in the center of the hall, flanked by my father on my right in his wooden wheelchair, and Kai on my left dressed in full formal pack armor. On the opposite side of the room stood Alpha Lucian, accompanied by two of his high guards.

The air in the room was thick with tension. Everyone knew what was at stake tonight—not just my fate, but the potential outbreak of a full-scale war between the Silver Moon and Bloodfang packs.

Elder Silas stood up, leaning heavily on his wooden staff. "We are gathered tonight under the light of the full moon to settle the claim made by Alpha Lucian of the Bloodfang Pack for Elena Vance, daughter of Guardians."

Silas turned his sightless-looking eyes toward Lucian. "Alpha Lucian, present your argument to the council."

Lucian stepped forward smoothly, his confidence filling the massive room. "Members of the Council. My request is simple and lawful. Under the Treaty of the Four Moons, an Alpha may request a female of Guardian lineage to secure a blood alliance between territories. In return, the Bloodfang Pack will grant Silver Moon full access to our eastern trade routes and military support against rogue factions."

Murmurs of agreement spread through several of the older council members. Eastern trade routes were valuable, and military support was always needed in these dark times.

"And what of the girl's choice?" my father’s voice rang out, strong and defiant. "The law also states that a Guardian cannot be forced into a union against her will if she is already sworn to her home Alpha!"

"She has not sworn her oath yet," Lucian countered sharply, looking at my father with cold precision. "She is nineteen years old and unbound. Until she takes the Guardian's Vow to Kai, she is free to choose her own path."

Alpha Thomas raised his hand, silencing the hall instantly. "That is correct. Elena has not yet taken the formal vow. Therefore, the choice ultimately rests upon her decision—or upon a trial of strength if the claim is contested."

Kai stepped forward, his heavy boots ringing against the stone floor. "I contest the claim."

Lucian raised an eyebrow, a slight smirk playing on his lips. "On what grounds, Prince Kai?"

"On the grounds that Elena Vance is bound to my heart," Kai announced clearly, his deep voice resounding through the high rafters of the hall.

Gasps filled the room. I turned my head sharply to look at Kai. My heart pounded rapidly against my ribs. *Bound to his heart?*

Kai looked down at me, his golden eyes filled with an unmistakable intensity. "I claim the right of First Blood. My family raised her, protected her, and she belongs to the Silver Moon Pack. If Alpha Lucian wants her, he will have to defeat me in the Sacred Ring."

"Kai, no!" I whispered frantically, grabbing his arm. "You don't have to do this!"

Lucian was a seasoned Alpha who had fought in dozens of brutal battles. Kai was powerful and skilled, but he had not yet fully inherited his father's Alpha strength through the ascension ritual. Fighting Lucian in combat was practically a death sentence.

Lucian let out a deep, rumble of dark laughter. "A trial by combat? Young prince, you are brave, but you are out of your depth. I will break you in that ring within minutes."

"Then let me be broken!" Kai yelled, his Alpha aura surging out violently, shaking the dust from the ceiling rafters.

"STOP!"

A terrifying, bone-chilling roar suddenly shattered the heated atmosphere of the room.

It wasn't Kai. It wasn't Lucian. It wasn't Alpha Thomas.

The heavy wooden doors of the Great Hall were violently blown off their iron hinges with a deafening crash! Splinters of wood flew through the air as several guards were thrown backward onto the floor, groaning in agony.

Dark, heavy shadow-smoke rolled through the destroyed doorway, bringing with it the nauseating scent of burnt copper, dark blood, and ancient magic.

Through the fog stepped a tall, sinister figure draped in long, jagged black armor. His face was covered by a bone-white skull mask, and eyes of burning violet glowed from behind the eye sockets. Behind him stood a dozen massive, monstrous wolves with pitch-black fur and red glowing eyes—rogues infected by dark magic.

"Alpha Malakor," Elder Silas gasped in sheer horror, stumbling back against the council table.

The warlord of the Shadow-Fangs—the most dangerous rogue faction in the Northern Continent.

Malakor’s cold, distorted voice echoed through the hall like grinding stones. "How sweet. Two foolish Alphas squabbling like dogs over a bone... while completely ignorant of what she truly is."

Malakor raised a clawed hand, pointing his dark blade directly at my chest.

"She is not just a Guardian's daughter," Malakor rasped, a sickening laugh echoing from under his mask. "She is the Vessel of the Sun Wolf. The ultimate bloodline needed to break the ancient curse on my dark kingdom."

Lucian immediately drew his broadsword, stepping in front of the council table. Kai drew his sword as well, stepping directly beside Lucian. For the first time, the two rival Alphas stood side by side, their hostility toward each other instantly shifting toward the new intruder.

"Touch her, and I'll rip your head off," Lucian growled, his body shifting halfway into his massive black wolf form.

"You'll have to go through both of us, warlord," Kai snarled, his golden eyes blazing with deadly intent.

Malakor chuckled softly, a dark, ominous sound that sent shivers down my spine. "Then both of you shall bleed tonight."

With a terrifying howl, the black shadow-wolves lunged into the hall, and pure chaos broke loose around us. Screams rang out as the dark beasts leaped over tables, snapping their jaws at the panicked elders and warriors.

Kai charged forward, his blade flashing in the torchlight as he sliced through the neck of the first shadow-wolf. Lucian moved like a shadow beside him, his heavy broadsword cleaving through two beasts at once with terrifying power.

I pulled both of my silver daggers, my heart pounding in my chest. My wolf inside me roared with a blinding, golden heat, and a radiant aura burst from my skin, blinding two dark wolves that tried to leap at me.

Malakor smiled wickedly from behind his white skull mask. "Yes, show me your light, little guardian. Tonight, you are coming with me."
