Emerence “Wren” Ashford

The sight of my locket resting against Lyra’s throat burned behind my eyes long after Julian dragged me back into the suite.

Every instinct screamed at me to run down that stone corridor, tear the silver chain from her neck, and reclaim the encryption key to my life before she could crack the code.

Instead, I had to sit on the velvet chaise lounge, cold and trembling, playing the docile, broken invalid.

The heavy mahogany door clicked shut behind Julian as he escorted Dr. Montgomery to the driveway.

Silence filled the bedroom, thick and suffocating, carrying the lingering scent of damp earth from the rose garden.

Kaelen said nothing.

He removed his rain-damp wool trench coat and dropped it over the back of an armchair. With quiet, deliberate movements, he rolled the sleeves of his crisp white dress shirt to his elbows, exposing strong forearms lined with veins and fine hair.

He pulled a small medical tray toward the chaise and placed a stethoscope, reflex hammer, and digital neurological monitor on it.

“Julian will be back in ten minutes,” Kaelen said, his low, gravelly voice cutting through the silence. “He wants a full physiological stress report logged for Montgomery’s files before the medical board leaves.”

“Lyra has the locket,” I whispered.

My voice was raw, barely audible. My hands were clenched in my lap, my knuckles white.

“She was standing by the east archway. She wore it around her neck, Kael. She knows what’s inside.”

Kaelen stopped.

He turned slowly, his silver-gray eyes fixing on me with sudden intensity.

“Are you certain?”

“I saw the chain. I saw the silver filigree.”

I breathed out shakily and unevenly because I was tense.

“If she hands that key to Julian, or decrypts my offshore trust herself, I lose everything. The entire corporate backing I’ve spent six months quietly protecting could disappear before the gala.”

Kaelen stepped into my path before I could pace the room.

He didn’t touch me immediately, but his six-foot-three frame blocked the sunlight coming through the rain-streaked window, wrapping me in his shadow.

“Sit back down, Wren,” he said gently.

The authority in his voice was absolute.

“Panicking plays directly into their hands. You need to give me a heart-rate reading consistent with an acute panic attack recovery, or Montgomery will demand a heavy sedative before he leaves the grounds.”

I swallowed hard and sat on the edge of the chaise.

“I don’t need a sedative. I need my key.”

“You need to survive the next ten minutes,” Kaelen replied softly.

He pulled a low leather stool closer and sat directly in front of me.

The proximity was immediate and suffocating.

His knees brushed the outside of my thighs, the fabric of his trousers warm against my silk ones. The scent of rain, cedarwood, and his natural warmth filled my senses, making my lungs tighten.

He picked up the stethoscope and slipped the earpieces into his ears.

“Shirt buttons,” he murmured, his gaze dropping to the collar of my silk blouse. “Unfasten the top three. I need direct contact for the acoustic monitor.”

My fingers trembled as I reached for the mother-of-pearl buttons.

The atmosphere shifted.

I undid the first button.

Then the second.

The third loosened, revealing the pale skin of my upper chest and the hollow of my throat.

Kaelen reached out.

The metal chest piece was cold against my skin when he pressed it just below my left collarbone. His hand holding it in place, however, was warm against me.

I gasped softly.

“Breathe, Wren,” he whispered.

His silver eyes lifted to meet mine.

The digital monitor beside us hummed, its small screen lighting up with an erratic spike in my heart rate.

Thump. Thump. Thump-thump-thump.

A faint, wicked smile touched the corner of Kaelen’s lips.

“Your heart is racing.”

“Because I’m… stressed about the locket,” I lied, my voice barely more than a breath.

“Is it?”

His thumb shifted from the silver casing of the stethoscope and moved across my bare skin.

The rough pad of his thumb traced a slow line along my collarbone, stopping at the sensitive hollow beneath my throat.

A sharp shiver ran down my spine.

My chest rose with a shaky breath as his fingers lingered, feeling the rapid pulse beneath my skin.

“Your heart isn’t racing from fear, Emerence.”

He used my real name.

The name no one in this house ever called me.

“Your pulse is spiking because I’m touching you.”

“Kael…” I whispered.

My hands gripped the edge of the velvet cushion until my fingers ached.

The attraction we had fought for weeks was threatening to consume the small space between us.

“Tell me to stop,” he murmured.

He lowered the stethoscope slightly, his knuckles brushing my upper chest as his silver eyes held mine.

“Tell me you want me to step back, and I will.”

I looked at his sharp jawline, the faint scar near his collarbone, and his lips only inches from mine.

I didn’t tell him to stop.

I couldn’t.

He was the only thing keeping me grounded in a house built on toxic lies.

I leaned forward slightly, my lips parting as my breath brushed his jaw.

“Don’t stop,” I whispered.

A low growl rumbled from Kaelen’s chest.

He abandoned the stethoscope, letting it fall to the floor.

His hands slid up my neck, his thumbs framing my jaw as he held my face and leaned closer.

The heat radiating from him was overwhelming.

His lips brushed mine.

It was feather-light, agonizingly slow, carrying the taste of rain and darker promises.

It wasn’t comfort.

It was a claim.

A slow, burning touch that sent heat rushing through me.

A soft sound escaped me against his mouth. My hands flew to his shirt, gripping the fabric and pulling him closer until his chest pressed against mine.

Click.

The soft sound of a digital camera shutter echoed from the quiet hallway outside my suite’s balcony doors.

Kaelen pulled away instantly.

His body went rigid as he turned, instinctively shielding me with his back. One hand dropped to the heavy glass handle of the balcony door.

Outside, on the rain-swept terrace, lay a tiny black memory card.

Someone had dropped it after pressing against the glass and photographing us through the sheer curtains.

My stomach twisted.

Then I saw the writing on the balcony glass above it.

Four words, written in crude, dark lipstick:

JULIAN HAS THE PHOTOS.

  • THE HEIRESS BEHIND THE MADNESS   Chapter 35: The first Touch

WRENTomorrow at midnight. The glowing white text on the matte-black screen blurred into a smear of harsh light. My lungs seized, the air suddenly thin and icy in my throat.I couldn’t breathe.Julian’s betrayal was one thing. A greedy, narcissistic man stealing a fortune was a tragedy I could understand. But this? This document bore the unmistakable, heavy-handed signature of Duchess Beatrix Ashford. My grandmother. The woman who had brushed my hair before my mother’s funeral. The woman who had once told me I was the only future this family had.She wasn’t trying to protect the Ashford name from my supposed madness. She had funded it.And now that Lyra was closing in on Julian, Beatrix was tying up the loose ends.A permanent offshore facility meant a black-site asylum. No records. No visitors. A ghost ship for inconvenient heiresses.“Wren.”Kael’s voice sounded like it was coming from underwater.“Wren, look at me.”I couldn’t tear my eyes away from the date.Tomorrow.Twenty-four

WRENI turn my back into the darkest corner of the room, my fingers curling tightly around the heavy brass base of the bedside lamp. My pulse roared in my ears, drowning out the steady rhythm of rain against the glass. Julian was downstairs. I had just seen him with my own eyes. The heavy oak door glided open, letting in a sliver of pale hallway light.A tall, broad-shouldered silhouette stepped over the threshold, closing the door behind him with a near-silent click. He didn’t reach for the light switch. He simply stood in the shadows, perfectly still, letting his eyes adjust to the darkness.“Put the lamp down, Wren. It’s just me.”The deep, gravelly baritone of Kaelen’s voice washed over me, instantly I felt relieved from the tension in my chest. I lowered the heavy brass base, my knees suddenly weak from the adrenaline crash. I couldn’t stop the quiet, shaky breath that escaped my lips as I stepped out of the shadows.Kael moved toward me, his lean, intimidating frame closing th

  • THE HEIRESS BEHIND THE MADNESS   Chapter33: Lyra’s secret visits

WRENMy jaw burned from holding a slack, vacant expression for four straight hours.Downstairs in the drawing room, I had played my part to absolute perfection. I had sat near the cold hearth, staring blankly at the unlit logs, letting my hands tremble against my knees whenever Julian crossed the room. When he handed me the harmless sugar pill with a glass of stale water, I swallowed it without a fight, letting him stroke my hair like a man fondling a prize horse he had finally broken. He whispered about how fragile I was, how much I needed him to handle the Ashford trust before my mind completely shattered.I hated the chalky taste on my tongue, but I hated the sickening pity in his eyes even more. Now, midnight had settled over Ashford Manor like a wet wool blanket. The heavy drapes in my bedchamber were drawn, but I stood in the narrow space between the velvet fabric and the ice-cold glass of the bay window. Rain clawed at the windowpanes, blurring the formal Cotswolds gardens belo

  • THE HEIRESS BEHIND THE MADNESS   Chapter 32: The Golden Cage Cracks

WRENThe echo of the gunshot had long faded from the damp stone tunnel, but the tang of blood and burned cordite still clung to the back of my throat.Lyra hadn’t pulled her trigger first. Kael had.Even with a hole ripped through his side, even as he leaned his full weight against me, his draw had been a flash of pure, terrifying instinct. One round through Lyra’s throat before her weapon could even fire. But the victory had cost us every drop of strength he had left.We hadn’t escaped into the night. We had been cornered in the lower garage by Julian’s secondary tactical unit before Millaray could even turn the engine over. Now, forty-eight hours later, the darkness of the subterranean tunnels had been replaced by the blinding, sterile white of Julian’s penthouse estate in the valley.I sat on the edge of the velvet armchair, my knees pressed tightly together, my hands resting meekly in my lap. I kept my head down, staring at the polished mahogany floorboards while watching the shad

  • THE HEIRESS BEHIND THE MADNESS   Chapter 31: Tactical Intimacy

WRENThe blast doors slammed shut above us with a heavy, concussive thud that rattled the fillings in my teeth. Up in the estate’s main office, the High Council’s execution squad was turning the sanctuary into a slaughterhouse, but down in the damp subterranean tunnel beneath the study, the world narrowed to the sound of Kael’s labored breathing. He was bleeding out.I hauled his arm over my shoulder, the heat of his body radiating through his wet jacket. The scent of copper, tobacco, and expensive cologne clung to his skin, thick in the stagnant underground air. Every step he took left a smear of dark crimson along the jagged stone walls.“Keep moving,” Kael growled, his voice gravelly against my ear. His fingers dug into my waist, partly for leverage, but with a sudden possessive tightness that sent electricity down my spine. “They’ll blow the inner breach in under two minutes.”“You can barely stand, Kael,” I hissed, locking my arm around his torso. My hand pressed against his ribs

  • THE HEIRESS BEHIND THE MADNESS   Chapter 30: A Queen’s Promise

Dr. Kaelen Thorne-VaneThe red lockdown alarm sliced through the subterranean air, turning the room into shadow and crimson.Clack-thunk.The metallic lock behind us wasn’t just engaged; it was sealed. We were trapped in a concrete vault beneath Mayfair, surrounded by ozone and chilled server fluid.Above us, on the narrow iron catwalk, a silhouette stood framed against the terminal’s glow. The long barrel of an anti-material sniper rifle pointed straight at my chest.“Don’t move, Kael,” a voice rasped from the shadows. It wasn’t Julian. It wasn’t Beatrix. It was a voice I’d buried three years ago.Vane’s former chief of security, a man who had sold out my father’s memory for a seat at ALPHA-00-ZERO’s table. “One breath, and I put a three-hundred-grain round through your sternum. The girl stays alive. You don’t.”My hand twitched toward the Sig Sauer beneath my coat. Every instinct screamed at me to fire. But the angle was impossible. The distance was forty feet. If I moved, he’d ki
