LOGIN“He's not going to make it, right?” Reid said the instant we walked out of his dad's room. I looked up at his sad face, and the urge to ruthlessly tell him that his dad wasn't going to make it came over me, but I pushed it down. Maybe I can go on with it in a nicer way.
“I saw the way you looked at him…there's no hope,” he said and let out a sad laugh. I was quiet.
“The medicine I gave him can only make sure he doesn't go through much pain and sustain his life for a little more time, but it can't do more than that,” I said, and I was surprised when I actually reached out and patted his shoulder. He seemed equally surprised as he looked down at me. I realized at that instant that he really was tall, as I always found myself looking up anytime I had to look at his face.
I didn't know how long I stood there, my hands on his shoulder as I kept staring at his eyes. There was something about them that felt... If I stared at it for way too long, I was going to disappear in their swirling depths. I knew his dad was going to start seeing changes in less than two hours. All of a sudden, I couldn't stand it. I kept getting lost in his stupidly handsome face instead of doing what I was here to do.
I reluctantly tore my eyes away from him. I had to leave now before I started stirring even the tiniest bit of suspicion. It would look too suspicious if I waited for his dad to start seeing improvements, and seeing how desperate Reid is, he was definitely going to beg me to stay and take care of his dad. I was definitely going to accept, but accepting easily would be way too suspicious. I turned away from him and pushed the door open to pack my medicine. Reid followed me and paused when he saw his dad fast asleep, looking peaceful for probably the first time in a really long time.
I zipped up my bag and stood up.
“I have to leave now… I really appreciate the help and hospitality you showed me these past few days, but I have to leave…”
“No, I mean I haven't gotten the chance to thank you for what you did to my dad.” Reid looked alarmed.
“I haven't exactly done anything compared to what you did to me. I can't thank you enough, but I really do have to leave. My uncle, whom I was looking for, is actually dead. I wanna pay my last respects to him… “ I was surprised at how easily the lie flowed from my mouth.
Reid looked like he wanted to protest, but it would be selfish of him to keep me from going to see my supposed late uncle.
“Sure… permit me to see you off…”
“No, I'm fine. I would find my way myself.” I didn't want him to say anything else as I immediately walked out. He followed me closely, muttering about how he was going to call the beta to drop me off outside the pack's perimeter in case of any more rogues lurking around the pack. I agreed to it.
Everything happened swiftly. I thanked the beta who dropped me off and watched him turn back. I stood by the road for a few minutes, staring back at the road that wound back to the pack I hated with everything in me. Fishing out my phone, I finally sent a text to Axel to tell him about my progress so far. The sky looked grey, as if rain was going to fall any moment from now. Instead of going to the house Axel had rented for me, I hailed another cab.
I wanted to visit my parents' grave. The sky darkened the moment I arrived at the cemetery, and I got out of the cab. I cursed silently within myself when I remembered I was busy being too sentimental to actually bring some flowers along with me. Clutching my bag even tighter, I walked towards the three graves with the stone head.
Axel said he couldn't get my brother's remains, that he had to bury one of his favorite toys right in between my parents. I went on my knees and just stared at their graves.
I didn't know what I wanted to say. I wasn't even sure I could manage out a few words. If I tried to talk, I was more likely to break down in tears, and the last thing I wanna do is to cry and show weakness. I've been weak all my life, and it'll be absurd to show my parents that I'm still yet to change. The atmosphere changed, and rain began falling, but I just stayed there, letting the rain beat me. Hopefully, that way it might try to wash away the sadness that still lingered.
But it didn't. I could feel the anger, the fury, and the regret that had been residing in me for years.
If only I hadn't run away from home, I could have at least died along with them… or maybe if I wasn't so weak as to find myself in that fire accident, then maybe my mom would be healthy enough to actually cure Reid's father instead of refusing to treat him, which led to their untimely death.
“I'm sorry I had to be your daughter. Maybe things would have been different if I weren't,” I managed out before I stood up and walked back the way I came, the rain still falling heavily. Perhaps it was falling instead of my tears.

I barely placed the plate of pasta on the table when I heard a knock.
Was that Axel?
Taking a forkful of pasta, I walked towards the door as I heard another knock.
“I'm coming…” I called out. I pushed the door open and paused mid-chewing when I saw who was standing there.
The boy lay, tightly bound to the bed. He struggled as he finally became conscious. He fluttered his eyelashes as the fluorescent lights seemed too bright for his eyes. He stared around, pain kicking in from all over. His body ached like crazy, and he tried to wriggle his hands free from where they were tied to the bedposts. He struggled furiously, tears running down his cheeks as he fought to tear his hands free. He succeeded in ripping one free, while scanning the laboratory for any sign of the crazy scientist. He rushed, not wanting to be caught. He was tied to the bed with thick rope. After another minute of struggle, he finally got rid of it, and the moment his feet touched the floor, a little spark of hope ignited in him.He got off the bed, tried taking a step, but he stumbled. He tried grabbing onto something but crashed into a table holding test tubes and various weirdly smelling solutions. Shards of glass scattered everywhere. He stepped on a broken piece, but he totally ign
My hands moved on their own as I worked on Alpha Derek.I didn't have to think about what I was doing. My body just knew. The antidote was a mixture I'd memorized years ago. Back when Axel was still teaching me. I measured the crushed herbs with trembling fingers, added the tincture drop by drop, and drew the liquid into a syringe. His pulse was so weak. If I didn't act fast, he would die right in front of everyone. And a part of me that I hated wondered if that would be so bad.He killed your family, that voice whispered. He destroyed everything you loved. He deserves this. But then I saw his face. Pale, fragile, and defenseless. And I remembered the way he'd smiled at me this morning, telling me I looked good. The way he'd thanked me for giving him a few more weeks with his son.I couldn't do it.I injected the antidote into his IV and watched, my heart pounding so hard I could hear it in my ears. The liquid disappeared into his veins, and nothing happened for a long, horrible momen
The hall went silent as everyone looked around, wondering who Valerie was. I stood there, still staring at Reid, forgetting that Valerie was my fake name. I snapped back to reality, and I found my feet moving before I could control them. My heart began to beat fast as I climbed the podium. All eyes were on me as Reid held out his hand and helped me up the stairs to the podium.People began to clap, and I was grateful that at least I wouldn't have to say anything. It was the first time I would stand in front of such a huge crowd, and they weren't staring in disdain or calling me a failure. They saw me as a hero, and for a moment I smiled, forgetting about the pill I would be using on Alpha Derek right here.I went to sit beside Alpha Derek, who smiled as I joined him. I gave him a faint, quick smile, immediately averting my gaze, and making sure I didn't stare into the crowd. People's gazes were still on me; aside from that, I didn't want to meet Axel's eyes and remember what he’d said
The moon cave wasn't anything much, but it was something Summers always found intriguing. Her dad claimed he gets the best view of the moon from there with his telescope. Today, he sat her down behind the telescope as Summers stared at the moon. She was quiet as she stared. This moon was going to decide her fate today. “I feel like this is the best spot for you to have your first shift. I purposely had it decorated for you,” Her father said with a bright smile. She was so deep in her thoughts that she didn't notice the little ribbons set up inside the cave. Summers smiled at her dad and pulled him into a hug.“Alright, sweetie, I'll wait for you outside while you do your thing.”He made to leave, and she immediately grabbed his hands. She was grateful he followed her instead of her mother; her mom wouldn't know anything about shifting anyway.“How does it work?” she asked.“Just give in to your instincts. Relax and let it take you.” Summers swallowed, not sure it would be that easy
Reid didn't take his eyes off us, and I found myself still staring until Theo followed my gaze. Something about the way he looked hurt made my heart drop.I looked away immediately and forced a smile at Theo.“Today will be a very busy day for you. Don't let me distract you.” I spoke.“Doesn't mean…” Theo barely finished when his father came to whisk him away. I turned my head to look at Reid again, but he wasn't looking at me anymore. He was smiling at a blonde-haired bitch who wouldn't keep her hands to herself. She kept touching his arm every second.Maybe that was how he felt when Theo tried to help me with my hair earlier. I couldn't bear to stare any longer. I picked up a cup of wine from a passing waiter and proceeded to walk away from the vicinity.A lady bumped into me, and I cursed.“Watch where you're going!” I snapped.“Aren't you excited to see me?” The familiar voice made me stop in my tracks. I turned to take a second look at the lady. The familiar face made me burst in
I barely slept that night.Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Reid's face, the way his eyes had dropped to my lips, the way he'd pulled away like touching me would burn him. I tossed and turned, my bruised wrist throbbing with a dull ache that matched the one in my chest. When morning finally came, I’d barely slept at all.I sat up slowly, wincing as I flexed my wrist. I swung my legs over the side of the bed and walked toward the mirror. The person staring back at me looked tired. The shadows under my eyes were darker than usual, and there was a hollow look in my gaze that I couldn't quite hide.Today was the ceremony. The moment Reid officially becomes the Alpha of the Bloodmoon pack. And the moment Axel would make his move.I pressed my palm against my chest, feeling my heart race beneath my fingers. I should have felt excited. This was what I'd been working toward for months. Years, even. Every lie I'd told, every mask I'd worn, every moment I'd smiled at Reid while planning his f
