Kade's POV

"I am not marrying Aurora."

My father's expression hardened immediately, but I refused to look away.

We had been arguing about the same thing for nearly an hour, and I was getting tired of repeating myself.

"You will marry her, Kade."

I let out a humorless laugh and leaned back against the chair. "Are you seriously hearing yourself right now? This is 2026, Dad, not 1926. People don't arrange marriages anymore. At least, normal people don't."

"Normal people do not inherit responsibility for an entire pack."

I rolled my eyes. "There it is again. Blood Moon Pack. Everything always comes back to the pack."

"Because everything will eventually come back to the pack," he replied sharply. "You are twenty-three years old, Kade. You are the future Alpha of Blood Moon, yet you continue to behave as though your only responsibility in life is hockey, parties, and whichever girl happens to catch your attention that week."

My jaw tightened.

"I'm completing my Alpha training."

"After being dragged into it."

"I'm the captain of Mooncrest's hockey team."

"Which you take more seriously than your future position as Alpha."

"Because I actually enjoy hockey."

My father shook his head in disappointment. "That is exactly the problem. You are doing well in every area of your life, but you refuse to take any of it seriously enough to become the leader you are supposed to be. You continue wasting your time as though you have another twenty years before responsibility catches up with you."

"I don't need a wife to become a good Alpha."

"You need a Luna."

"I need to choose my own Luna."

My father sighed heavily before moving toward the window.

"Princess Aurora is not some random woman I picked out because I thought she looked pretty beside you. She comes from a respected royal bloodline, she has been trained for leadership since childhood, and she understands what it means to stand beside an Alpha. She is intelligent, disciplined, politically connected, and perfectly capable of becoming the Luna of Blood Moon."

"She is also rude, entitled, and completely obsessed with me. Can you imagine? She calls herself my wife."

"That's because she loves you."

I stared at him in disbelief. "You cannot possibly be serious."

"I am completely serious. Aurora is the perfect fit for you, whether you are willing to admit it yet or not."

"I don't want her."

"Well, I'm sorry you don't have a choice here. As your father, I know what's best for you, and trust me, you'll thank me later."

My father turned around, and the calm expression on his face immediately made me suspicious.

"Aurora will be arriving soon."

My stomach sank.

"Why?"

"Because if you are going to marry her, I expect the two of you to spend enough time together to understand what this marriage will require. So you had better start preparing for your wedding."

My stomach dropped.

"What wedding? You've already decided on the wedding without even asking my consent?"

"I know what's best for you, so I don't need your consent. All you have to do is accept it."

I dragged a hand down my face.

"You've got to be kidding me."

I grabbed my helmet from the table.

"You're giving me a headache, Dad. I'm not marrying Aurora, and I cannot continue having this conversation with you."

I stormed out.

The moment I climbed onto my bike, I jammed the helmet over my head and started the engine. The engine roared to life beneath me, and I accelerated away from the estate before my father could find another reason to remind me that my entire future apparently belonged to everyone except me.

The wind hit my face as I drove, but even the speed wasn't enough to clear my head.

Aurora was coming, and my father wanted a wedding.

Somehow, I was expected to smile, shake her hand, and pretend that spending the rest of my life with a woman who irritated me within five minutes of every conversation was exactly what I wanted.

By the time I reached the bar where my teammates usually gathered, I was still furious.

I parked outside, removed my helmet, and walked through the entrance with enough anger in my stride that Dylan immediately looked up from the table.

"Whatever happened, I can already tell it wasn't good."

Marcus turned toward me and laughed. "You look like you're about to punch somebody."

"I might."

I dropped into the empty seat beside them and waved toward the bartender. "Give me something strong."

Dylan raised an eyebrow. "That bad?"

"My father wants me to marry Aurora."

The laughter around the table immediately stopped.

Marcus stared at me. "Wait. You mean actually marry her?"

"Apparently, that's the plan."

Dylan leaned back and whistled. "Damn. Your father really isn't playing around."

"He thinks she's perfect Luna material."

Dylan shook his head. "I don't understand how you haven't lost your mind yet."

"I have. I'm just hiding it well."

The bartender placed my drink in front of me, and I took a long swallow before continuing.

"I don't even like her. She's rude, she's arrogant, she's constantly flirting with me, and she's so obsessed with the idea of becoming my wife that she already talks about me as though we're married."

Marcus laughed. "She does call herself Mrs. Voss."

"Exactly. And now my father wants me to actually make it happen."

Dylan was quiet for a moment before his expression changed.

"What if you make her end it herself?"

I looked at him. "How?"

"Get a girlfriend."

I frowned.

Dylan leaned forward with a grin. "Not a real girlfriend. A fake one. You make Aurora believe you're completely serious about another woman, and eventually she'll get tired of waiting around for you to change your mind. She'll call off the engagement herself."

I stared at him.

For the first time since leaving my father's office, I felt the tension in my shoulders loosen.

"Why didn't I think of that?"

Marcus laughed. "Because you've been too busy being angry."

The idea actually made sense. If Aurora believed I was already involved with someone else, there was no way she would willingly agree to marry me. My father might be able to pressure me, but he couldn't force Aurora to accept a marriage if she decided she wanted nothing to do with me.

Then another thought occurred to me.

"There is one problem."

Dylan raised his glass. "What's that?"

"Every girl around here is just like Aurora."

Marcus laughed. "Meaning?"

"Meaning half the girls at Mooncrest would probably volunteer to fake-date me, and then spend the next six months fighting each other over who gets to keep me."

Dylan nodded reluctantly. "Fair point."

"There has to be someone different."

The two of them exchanged a look.

Then Dylan said, "There is."

I looked between them.

"Who?"

Dylan's grin widened.

"Selene Calloway.”

Chapter 9Kade’s povI drove straight home while thinking back on the conversation I had with my dad earlier. “Who is the girl you were caught kissing?”I could remember rolling my eyes on the call. “Father, we don't need to talk about this.”But before I could land, his voice thundered through the speaker in anger.“I want you to come straight home. I don't want to have this discussion with you over the phone. I want you to look me in the eyes and tell me why you decided to go around and make a fool out of yourself.” “Father, we can talk about this after school. I'm still in school.”“Now, Kade,” he had growled, as I took the phone away from my ears before cutting the call. I could remember taking deep breaths, trying to figure out what answer I was going to give him because right now I had poked the bear. Now I was very close to the house, thinking of all the excuses I could give. This was going to end up being a huge fight, one I wasn't ready for but one I had to give. The mo

Chapter 8Selene’s povI got back into the school building and headed straight for class as Amelia blocked my way with two of her goons. Her aura flared, a sign that she was angry but trying hard to hide it.“Well, well, well,” she smiled a fake smile, “if it isn't Fatty girl right here.”I sighed, taking a step back. “Please, I don't want any trouble.”“Well, trouble found you.” She looked at me from head to toe, then shoved me back with a firm finger which I was sure would leave a bruise. “What's this I hear and see about you and Kade being together?” I had nothing to say as I stared at her blankly. “What? Can't talk now? Where was all that aura when he was kissing you? Or should I say you were forcing a kiss on him?”“I didn’t force any kiss on anyone, he kissed me.”She scoffed, “oh please. Kade would never look at you like anything but a fat ugly thing that needs to be taught her place.”“I’m not going to stand here and listen to you insult me.”I tried walking past her but he

Kade’s povI laughed while pointing to the little screen on my dashboard, which was showing a funny movie. I then took a huge bite of my shawarma before turning to look at Selene, who wasn't even eating her food. Her wrap was still there in her lap while she fiddled with her fingers. “What's going on?” I asked, “You're not eating.”She looked at me. Her eyes filled with sadness before she gave me a smile, but I knew the smile was fake. “I'm not hungry.”I rolled my eyes. “Is it because of what they said in class?”She shrugged. “Not really. I just… I'm not hungry.”I scoffed. “You know I can tell when people are lying, right? I've had that all my life. Had people lying to me, left, right, center, because I am the alpha son. I'm used to that kind of life, and I don't want that to happen between us.”She muttered something under her breath, which I heard but I pretended like I didn't hear it. “I didn’t get that.”She looked at me squarely. A hardened look in her eyes. “Funny how yo

Selene’s povThroughout my day in class, I didn't pay attention to anything the teacher said. I kept on thinking about what Kade had told me, the way he had wanted me to be his girlfriend. I kept wondering how it would feel like being his fake girlfriend. Yes, it would be fake, but what if something was to happen between us? After all, we had to make it look real. What if I made a move that would be unethical? What if I pushed it a bit too far to achieve my goal of having him take my virginity? How would that make him feel? How would that make me feel? Of course, I knew what Kade's type was. I wasn't stupid. His type was slim, hot girls. And as usual, I was plus-sized. That little bit bothered me. No matter how many times I tried to go to the gym to lose some weight, I would always come back crying because I would see girls from my class being there and taking pictures of me. I hated that. I couldn't be myself. I couldn't eat what I wanted in the cafeteria without people pointin

SELENE'S POVI should have known something was wrong when Kade Voss walked toward me after classes. He had never walked toward me like that before.Usually, whenever Kade saw me at school, he would give me a casual smile, maybe ruffle my hair if Ethan was standing nearby, and ask how my classes were going before turning his attention back to his teammates or whichever beautiful girl happened to be hanging around him that day.Today was different. He was alone, and he was walking directly toward me.I immediately looked around, wondering if perhaps there was someone standing behind me that I had somehow failed to notice. There wasn't.My heart began beating faster.Kade stopped in front of me and studied my face for a moment."Can I talk to you?"I tightened my grip around the books against my chest."About what?""It's private."That did absolutely nothing to calm my nerves.I glanced at the students passing through the hallway before reluctantly following him toward the quieter end.

KADE'S POVI nearly spat my drink across the table."What?"Marcus burst out laughing. "You heard him."I wiped my mouth and stared at both of them as though they had collectively lost their minds."Are you two insane? Selene is Ethan's sister.""Yes, we know.""She's my best friend's sister.""We know that too."I shook my head. "Absolutely not. Ethan would kill me."Dylan shrugged. "Ethan is in Spain.""That doesn't change anything.""It changes everything," Marcus argued. "He's going to be gone for months. You need to get rid of Aurora before the engagement becomes official, and Selene is the only girl you know who isn't constantly throwing herself at you."I leaned back in my chair and stared at them. They were actually serious. There was another reason Selene was different, and it had nothing to do with her being available. For more than fifteen years, Ethan and I had been inseparable. His family was practically my second family, and Selene had always been part of that picture. I
