Chapter 6
Adele Wilson ‘Thank you for the offer, but I don't think it'll be necessary’. My fingers tightened on my phone, heart thudding, and eyes glued to my phone, reading the message that I had typed. “Just give it up, Adele. You're already Chloe and Henry's target. This is the best thing you can do for yourself.” I whispered, wiping the texts. I stayed at the rooftop until it was lunch break, and I headed to the canteen. Silence thickened in the air the moment I stepped into the canteen, all heads turned to me, then their whispers followed. I strode to the counter to get my food, ignoring everyone, then walked over to sit alone at a corner. My eyes wandered around the canteen, and as I spotted Chloe walking in through the entrance door, my body went numb. For a second, the idea of escaping crossed my mind as it was the only way that I could get away from her, but I decided against it. Then Jason walked up to me. Tray in hand, eyes locked on me. “Hey! Mind sitting with you?” My eyes widened… Huh? My eyes swept around the canteen as their murmurs faded into silence. “My hands are hurting.” Jason spoke, drawing my attention to the tray in his grip. “Oh… yes. Yes, you can.” “Thank you.” He pulled a chair across from me and sat. My eyes met with Chloe's burning eyes, and I quickly looked away, swallowing nothing. “They are going to talk, just ignore them.” Jason said, digging into his food, and I nodded. I was used to it after all. “Hmm.” He lifted his gaze to me, and as our eyes met, heat crept up my chest, my grip on the cutlery tightened. ‘Don’t blink, Adele. Don't’ I was afraid he'd vanish if I did. Jason Wolff. Sitting with me was like a dream come true. “Henry is here.” Then someone announced, and my heart skipped a beat. “I bet they are going to fight over her. Adele is his plaything... he's going to be mad seeing her with Jason.” My jaw tightened, my throat burned hot, down to my stomach. The rage of being called Henry’s plaything was eating me out, but the presence of him made my heart pound, begging for an escape. His familiar cologne made my stomach twist inside out, and his approaching footsteps sent shivers down my spine, my palms growing sweaty as I rubbed them against my skirt under the long table. Jason was calm, eating his food as if nothing was happening. Then he stopped at our table. Henry. “Hey, Wilson…” His hand casually rubbed the back of my neck, and I felt the hair there stood. Wilson? There would always be trouble each time he addressed me using my surname. Am I cooked? “Can I join you?” He asked, dropping his tray of food right beside mine. He pulled out the chair beside me and sat, without waiting for my reply. “I know you wouldn't mind… Right, Wilson?” He leaned close, wrapping his arm around my shoulder. I lifted my gaze to Jason, and he still sat, unbothered. “Oh… You are here, Jason? I didn't see you.” Henry chuckled, reclining on the chair. “I've never seen you with Adele. This is unusual.” he continued. Jason dropped his cutleries, then lifted his gaze to Henry, a blank, yet powerful expression graced his face. “She hasn't asked you to sit. Don't you think this is rude?” Henry scoffed, removing his hand from my shoulder. He clenched his jaw tightly, his eyes boring into Jason's, a smug smirk playing around his lips. “Oh… right…” Henry paused, turning to me. “My bad, Wilson. You are not mad at me for not waiting for your response before sitting here, are you?” I wanted to tell him, “You are rude, jerk!”, but I didn't dare. Not to even open my mouth. “Come on, Wils—” Jason cut him off. “Her name is Adele, Henry. Wilson is her father's name.” Henry went mute, a deep frown settling on his face, but he smiled again, placing a hand on my shoulder. “She is not complaining, is she?” he looked at me. “Adele is my friend, and she doesn't have a problem with me addressing her by her last name.” “I have a problem with it!” I snapped... but in my mind. “It doesn't matter if she is your friend, Henry. It's rude.” Jason's voice was calm, yet firm. “Jason—” “Why don't you excuse us, Henry? I have something private to discuss with Adele.” Jason cut him off. “What?” "Excuse us." Jason leaned close, eyes locked on Henry. I felt my butt burning hot. Like I was on a hot seat. What was this? Henry looked at me. More like a threatening glare, and without another word, he stood and walked away. Not even taking his food. Then Chloe followed. Not without shooting me a glare that could kill me. I exhaled deeply. Like a heavy weight was just lifted off my heart. “I want to show you something. Meet me at the ice hockey arena. 4 p.m. Don’t be late.” Jason said, then stood and left the canteen. I stared after him until he was out of my sight. What does he want to show me? ‘I told you they were going to fight over her’. ‘This is really crazy. Is this some drama or something? This is so unreal’ ‘I think Jason has really lost his mind. Why is he defending Adele? The fat ugly girl?’ Those students… they would never keep their noses off my business, but they weren't my problem now. I just hope things gets better...Chapter 14Adele Wilson “Strip, Adele!”I froze. My eyes widened.“Wh…what?” My voice cracked, lips trembled as cold seeped through my body.“He…Henry…” My throat burned hot… Air vanished from my lungs. I opened my mouth to talk, but no words came.“That is the punishment I've chosen for you… for disobeying and humiliating me.” He went back to sit on the chair, lips curled in a smirk, eyes locked on me.I tightened my jaw, staring at him silently, tears streaming down my cheeks. He already destroyed my father's house. What more does he want?“Why are you doing this to me, Henry? I did nothing wrong to you.” My voice cracked.“What did you do to me…” he mumbled, leaning close, eyes locked on me. “What did I tell you, Adele? You are mine, Adele… Mine!”I tightened my fist, dropping my gaze. My mind went blank for a moment. I just knelt there, staring at the floor. My hand trembled as I lifted my hand to my shirt, but paused. There's no way in hell I'm doing this.I instinctively stoo
Chapter 13Adele Wilson I walked inside the ice hockey arena at exactly 5:30 A.M.My legs halted forcefully as I spotted Jason on the ice rink, skating. Fingers curled tightly around the hockey stick as he moved the puck speedily across the rink.I had pictured everything in my mind. How beautiful and perfect I would be after Jason helped me lose some weight as he had promised, but I couldn't bring myself to continue this. Not when my father's life is in jeopardy."Why have you not changed into your workout clothes yet?"My breath caught in my throat as his voice slammed me back to reality, and I realised he was already standing in front of me, eyes locked on me. "Good morning..." My voice sounded beneath the loud banging in my chest. "Yeah... Morning. Go change into your workout fit and come back." He then turned, skating away when I called his attention."Jason..." He paused and looked back at me."Yes?"I bit my lip so hard that it almost bled. My fingers dug into my palms in a
Chapter 12Adele Wilson ‘Stay away from Jason, and I will spare you, Adele’.My breath caught in my throat as Chloe's voice rang in my head over and over again. I curled up on the bed, staring into space, many thoughts lingered on my mind. The anger I felt earlier that pushed me to talk back at Henry had disappeared. All I felt now was fear… Just like that, I had crawled back into my shell, but still, I didn't regret what I did. I'd have still done that even if it was the last thing I had to do on earth. My phone rang. My father's number displayed on the screen.“Father?” I muttered, wiping my tears with the back of my palm.I cleared my throat, to be sure I didn't sound teary, then I answered the call, pressing the phone to my ear.“Father…”“Adele…” his voice cracked, and he sniffled. “Father… are you alright?” “Yes, I'm fine, daughter… I… uhm… can you not come home for some time?” I squinted my eyebrows. “Huh?”“The thing is, our house was attacked.” He sounded like he was a
Chapter 11Adele Wilson “He…Henry…” father stuttered, obviously tense. Has this bastard been bullying my father too?“Uhm… I'm sorry… I had no idea you… you… were in the academy.” Father's voice quivered, his hands trembled slightly as he fondled his fingers. Seriously?I stepped away from Henry, and went to my father. “Father, you should get going.” I rubbed his arm to ease him.“Come on, Adele. I'm still talking to him. You can't ask him to leave like that…” he paused, then turned to my father and smirked. “You won't leave, will you?”My father looked at me, forcing a smile. “Daughter, why don't you go back to your dorm, hmm? Father will handle this here.”“No. I won't leave until I watch you leave.” I insisted.“Aww… What a father and daughter moment. I love this.” Henry chuckled, clapping his hands. My heart twisted in my chest, hammering against my ribcage, and blood boiling as rage spurred through me. “Father, you should leave. I will sort this out with Henry.” I whispered to
Chapter 10Adele Wilson ‘Jase? She's even calling him by a nickname? Do they know each other before?’My heart twisted in my chest as I watched Jason wave back at her… smiling.Wait… this was the first time I'd ever see Jason smiling. They must be really close.“Come on.” Viola held my arm and dragged me to Jason.“This is unfair, Jase! You didn't call me to come here quickly.” Viola pouted her lips, sitting across from Jason.“I had a meeting with the coach. I rushed here for breakfast as soon as I left.” The way he looked at her as he spoke. The way his voice was extremely calm. It stirred something in me. Not anger… maybe jealousy.“I'll go buy us food…” Viola stood and turned to me. “What should I buy for you, Adele?”“Uhm… Rice—”“Salad… Get her salad.” My eyes widened as Jason spoke. Salad? That wasn’t even enough to fill my stomach, let alone fuel my aching body. But Jason’s eyes told me this wasn’t a debate.“Uhm… Jason…” my voice faded as he lifted his gaze to me, and I l
Chapter 9 Next morning Adele Wilson I woke up at dawn and got ready for school. A smile spread across my lips as I picked my suitcase and left my room. My father was still sleeping, so I wrote a note and left it on the table for him before leaving. The first bus usually leaves by 5:30 A.M, and fortunately, I got to the bus stop at the time that the bus arrived. My alarm blared as I stepped out of the bus in front of the academy. It was already 6 A.M. “Shit! I'm late!” I cursed silently, dragging my suitcase behind me as I hurried towards the gate, and as I stepped inside the academy premises, I spotted Jason. He stood along the veranda, hands tucked inside his joggers. He straightened up as I approached him, his eyes gazing straight at me. Cold, quiet, and unreadable. I halted in front of him, almost out of breath. “Good morning.” “You are late." he glanced at my suitcase, then back to my face, his eyes boring into mine as he continued, “Woke up late?” “No. The b
