Nadia's Pov

“Shall we stop lying to each other now?”

My murderer sits on the edge of the neat bed. She folds her hands in her lap and waits patiently, like a kind hostess waiting for her guest.

Between us, on the desk, are three things: the knife that killed me, the seal that hunted me, and the girls whose names have been crossed out.

Run, every part of me screams.

Rule three: the woman I have become reminds me.

I place the candle on the desk. My hands want to shake, but I refuse to let them.

  • The Hollow Moon Awakens   The Empty Eyes

Lyra's POVForty girls live on the servants’ floor of the east wing, but thirty-one of them are like empty shells. Their bodies are there, but they are no longer truly themselves.“I know the exact number because I am the only person in this palace who can tell when something inside someone is missing.”To everyone else, the girls in gray uniforms are perfect servants. They are quiet, never complain, never miss home, and never laugh or have fun. They can even work at midnight without needing a candle. The stewards like them because they never cause trouble. The other servants, like the maids, know something is strange about them. But they have learned not to talk about it. Instead, they avoid those girls and use a different staircase. But I'm the Heart. I learned what that means the night I fed a starving wraith from my own chest.I can sense the bonds between people as easily as other people can sense changes in the weather. When I walk through the east wing, I can sense that somethi

  • The Hollow Moon Awakens   The Locksmith's Offer

Nadia's PovOn my second evening in the bride's apartments, the doors simply open, and a slim, gray-haired man in a plain dark coat walks in alone. He looks at my maids and waves them out. They curtsy and leave without a word. Then he sits across from me at the small table as if we have been having tea together every week for years."Lady Voss."He pours tea into both our cups himself."Forgive me for coming without notice. I find that I learn very little during formal audiences. Everyone acts differently when they know they are being watched."I recognize him immediately. I never met him in my first life, but I know exactly who he is.Cassian's father, and the Alpha King. The moment he enters the room, everything seems to move around him.His face is warm, even kind. But I have spent two lifetimes learning the difference between real warmth and a smile someone has learned to wear.In my first life, this man never looked at me. I married Dorian, ruled beside him, died, and the King re

  • The Hollow Moon Awakens   The City of White Stone

Lyra's POVOn the last morning, I ride into the capital on the Alpha Prince's own horse. The trap we outsmarted never comes, and somehow, that frightens me more than the trap ever could. At dawn, Cassian announces the change of route in a bored voice."We're using the north gate. The rear wagon's axle can't be trusted. Miss Thorne will ride with me. I need to keep an eye on my father's property."He says it like the decision means nothing. But I see Bray's face, and just for a second, something changes in his expression.A tiny flicker, and then it is gone.He looks like a man rebuilding a plan inside his head. So I spend the entire morning waiting for the counterattack.I ride in front of Cassian, his arm wrapped tightly around my waist like an iron bar. His heartbeat is steady against my back. But through the bond, I know the truth. He isn't calm, not even close. He is tense and ready to strike.Together, we watch everything, and nothing happens. The north gate swallows us into a ri

  • The Hollow Moon Awakens   The Girl at the Crossroads

Lyra's PovCassian reaches the kitchen before I can even put down the water jug.He comes through the door half-dressed, with wild eyes, and holding a knife. He looks around the room, searching for whatever caused my fear to rush through the bond. Then he sees me. I am standing frozen beside the shuttered window, my heart beating like a frightened rabbit.“What happened?” His voice is sharp.“I heard two men in the stable yard,” I whisper. “Commander Bray and a stranger.”Cassian's eyes narrow. “What were they saying?”“They're planning to take me.”My voice shakes. “At the river gate, on the last day. They're going to create a fake delay. Then the rear wagon will take the road beside the old wall.” I swallow. “They're taking me to a place called Vale House. To someone they call the Lady.”Cassian goes completely still. “The man said she only needs an hour with me.” I force myself to continue. “Then the King can present whatever is left of me.”I watch it happen as, somewhere in the

But you still took twelve days to find it.”She shakes her head. “Honestly, Lady Nadia, the girl I knew was much faster.”“The girl you knew,” I say, “was easier to control. Being murdered changes a person.”There, the truth is finally out between us, and strangely, there is no dramatic reaction.Seraphine simply nods, as calmly as
