"Oh, Leo. Silakan masuk. Dinda masih di kamar mandi, tapi sebentar lagi selesai," ujar Bu Mela sambil mempersilakan Leo duduk di ruang tamu.
Leo merasa sedikit canggung, tapi dia berusaha menjaga sikapnya.
"Sebenarnya, Ibu ingin meminta sesuatu darimu," ujar Bu Mela, suaranya sedikit bergetar, namun tetap tegas.
“Ibu… butuh kasih sayang seorang lelaki,” ucapnya pelan namun jelas.
Leo memandangnya, berharap Bu Mela hanya salah bicara. Tapi wajahnya serius, tanpa sedikitpun keraguan.
“Bu… itu—” Leo tidak sanggup merangkai kalimat.
“Itu syaratnya,” potong Bu Mela. “Kalau kamu benar-benar mau menikah dengan Dinda, buktikan.”
Diam panjang menyelimuti ruangan.
Leo tahu Dinda begitu mencintainya.
“Mas? Kamu kok diam banget hari ini?” tanya Dinda.
Leo mengerjap. “Oh? Nggak apa-apa kok, cuma capek.”
Jawaban aman. Tidak jujur. Tapi Dinda menerimanya tanpa curiga.
Leo memutar mobil menuju taman yang sepi. Bukan tempat khusus, hanya ruang tenang di mana ia bisa mendengar pikirannya sendiri tanpa gangguan.
Dinda memandangnya dengan khawatir begitu mobil berhenti. “Mas… kamu yakin nggak apa-apa?”
Leo menarik napas panjang. Semua ingin ia ceritakan. Tapi ia teringat ancaman Bu Mela.
“Aku cuma mikir soal pernikahan nanti,” katanya pelan. Separuh kebenaran, separuh kebohongan.
Leo mencoba tersenyum. “Rumah yang dekat taman itu. Tenang, tapi tetap deket ke mana-mana.”
Dinda mengangguk, matanya berbinar.
Leo tertawa kecil. “Kamu ngomongnya kayak mau punya banyak anak.”
Dinda menjawab tanpa ragu, bercampur canda, “Memang aku pengen punya banyak anak! Mungkin lima atau enam. Lucu kalau mereka kayak kamu.”
Grayson recovered quicker than Amberleigh did as she stood there covering her mouth, tears streaming down her cheeks. He fell to his knees on the concrete beside his best friend. His bound hands immediately went to the bleeding hole in Leo’s stomach trying to stop the blood flow.“Oh, fuck Leo!” screamed Grayson. “What are you doing here? Okay, we’re going to get you out of here okay brother just hold on! He needs a fucking doctor! Let Amber get Leo out of here and I’ll stay with you bastards. I’ll give you thirty billion dollars just please let Amber get Leo to the fucking hospital!”“I’m so sorry Grayson. I fucked this up…” sobbed Leo.Grayson placed his hand against Leo’s cheek as tears leaked from the corner of the chef’s eyes, sliding down into the concrete below. Tears also crept out the edges of the billionaire’s blue eyes as Grayson held his friend’s head up off the hard floor.“You didn’t. I love you, Leo. Just please hang on man. We’re going to get you some help brother.
Amberleigh found herself with a gun in her face again. Fantastic. She was getting fucking tired of near-death experiences today thank you very much. And she was so looking forward to all these bastards with guns dead on the concrete floor. That was all she wanted for Christmas this year.“Who the fuck are you?” said Morte, “and who the fuck sent you?”“My name is Amberleigh Dubois. And no one sent me. I came here to broker a new deal. Two billion dollars in exchange for Grayson. And the Van Tessin’s don’t get a fuckin’ dime.”“Amber? Why the fuck are you even here? And Leo let you do this? Something so fucking dangerous and stupid. I’ll kill him! What the fuck did you hope to accomplish by showing up here? How the fuck did you even know where to find me?”She shrugged, “Their boy Lazy Eye has a big mouth. I ran into him at The Rabbit Hole. I take it you all didn’t know I was born in The Fringe and I have ties to your gang the Psychos. Lazy Eye sang like a fuckin’ canary. Easy peasy.”
Amberleigh saw no one in the warehouse lot at first as she jogged across the cracked pavement yelling her fictitious dog’s name “Bella!” She nearly had the door to the warehouse opened before a man abruptly appeared pointing a gun in her face. Her startled scream was real as a stocky man with an unkempt beard and mustache walked out. And she noticed he walked with a limp. “What the fuck do you want bitch?” he demanded. “what the fuck are you doing here?” She recognized that deep raspy voice that was as unpleasant to the ears as nails down a chalkboard. This was the fucker who had beaten Grayson on the video. That spineless coward who attacked a man who had no way to defend himself. And he wasn’t wearing a mask. No fucking way he’d let her just walk away from here. She was counting on it.She put her hands up and backed away slowly, “I’m sorry sir. I didn’t think anyone was here. I thought this place was abandoned. I was just looking for my dog Bella. I
Giovanni decided to walk his daughter to within a few blocks of the warehouse where Grayson was being held. They spoke little on the way and for that Amberleigh was grateful. She didn’t think she could deal with another heavy conversation at the moment. Her nerves and her head were already in shambles and it only got worse the closer they got to the old warehouse. It was used to store boats long ago and had been empty for a decade at least. It was in the heart of Psycho territory and only fifteen miles from Leo’s warehouse. Well, what used to be his place anyway. Amber kept going over the details of her plan in her head. She could do this. It would work. It had to. It was a long time coming. But now that moment was here, it was with mixed emotions to say the least. She was excited, anxious, terrified, all at the same time. She just wanted to see Grayson. And she would give him the longest hug in the fucking world when both of them walked out of that fucking warehouse.
