LOGINZayn Pov
I slammed the door hard enough to crack the frame and tore through the room like something in my chest needed a target more than it needed sense. A table went over. Glass shattered against the far wall. I don't remember picking anything up. Just the sound of things breaking, and some small, distant part of me thinking it still wasn't enough.
"What the hell was that, Zayn?" Raphael, right behind me, breathless from keeping pace.
I didn't answer. My hands were shaking. I put one through the wooden frame of a chair just to feel something give under me for once.
"You made her your damn personal slave," Raphael said, louder, angrier, like he had any right to be. "You were supposed to execute her, or ship her off to the vampires like the others."
"I can't deal with you right now." My voice came out lower than I meant it, dangerous, Leo clawing at the inside of my skull, restless in a way I didn't have energy for yet.
"Why's your wolf trying to surface?" Tristan asked. He was the only one in the room still using his head instead of his mouth.
"Because he wants to be with his mate." The word left me before I'd decided to say it out loud to anyone, before I'd even fully let myself think it.
Tristan went very still. "What. What do you mean, mate. Don't tell me she's your mate."
"Yes."
"Whose mate?" Raphael, still not catching up, still standing there useless.
"The slave, dummy," Tristan said to him, and I don't remember choosing to move.
Leo got there before I did. My hand closed around Tristan's throat and lifted him half off the floor. My beta. My oldest friend. I didn't care.
"Don't you dare call her a slave." My voice wasn't fully mine, something older riding underneath it. "She is MINE. My mate."
"Let him go, Zayn," Raphael said, somewhere far off, the words taking too long to reach me.
"It's ALPHA," I snarled, and dropped the full weight of it over him, and he folded, one knee hitting the floor, head bowed before he'd decided to bow it.
"I'm sorry, Alpha," he said, fast, desperate. "Please. Give Zayn control back."
I let go. Tristan hit the floor coughing, one hand at his throat, and it took a full breath before I felt my own hands again, before I could tell where I ended and Leo's fury stopped.
*You've always been too soft on him,* Leo said, disgusted, before he pulled back and left me standing in a room I'd just wrecked, staring down at my beta gasping for air on the floor.
"What the hell, Zayn," Tristan managed, once his breath came back, still not standing, still watching me like I might do it again.
"She's my mate. That's what the hell it's about." I dragged a hand down my face. "Leo won't let me hurt her. Best I can do for what's left of my sanity is make her my personal slave."
Silence. Raphael stayed on one knee, not moving, not looking at me.
"You're lucky you never got to sleep with her," Tristan said to him, some of the tension finally cracking, dry humor bleeding back into his voice. "He would've killed you."
Raphael scratched the back of his neck, still not meeting my eyes. "I did try. She stopped me herself." A pause. "Suppose I owe her a thank you. For the kick."
"I think you should," Tristan said, laughing despite himself.
Raphael shot him a sharp look, then turned back to me.
"So what are you going to do," Tristan asked, careful now, standing but keeping his distance. "Are you accepting her?"
Something in my chest went white-hot. "Never." Flat. Final. "I am never taking a human as my mate."
"You can't reject her either. You know what that does to you."
"I know what it does." My jaw ached from how hard I was clenching it. "That's why she's my personal sl..."
I couldn't finish it. My tongue locked. My skull split down the middle, pain so sharp I nearly dropped to my knees, Leo screaming behind my eyes at the word before I could even get it out.
Raphael, wisely, said nothing.
"Can't believe we waited this long for our Luna to be human," Tristan said quietly, more to himself than either of us.
*I want to see her,* Leo said, and it wasn't a request. *Why aren't we with her right now.*
*You know what her kind did to our parents,* I said back. *We can't accept her.*
*I don't care what her kind did. She isn't the ones who killed them.*
*They're the same kind,* I screamed at him, and cut the link before he could answer, before I had to hear him say it again, before I had to feel how much I wanted him to be right.
That was the part I couldn't afford to sit with. Not the anger. The wanting.
Tristan and Raphael were both watching me in silence. They knew the look of me mid-argument with something that wasn't either of them.
"He's not taking it well," Tristan said finally.
"No. He wants to see her."
Raphael glanced up. "Should I have the guards bring her here?"
"Do it."
A few minutes later, a knock came at the door.
"Bring her in," I said, and hated how much of me meant it.
Kiara Pov What’s actually going on here? I thought, still standing. He pulled away from the hug and looked at me. Up close, the blood on his skin looked darker. There were cuts along his side that hadn’t closed the way werewolf wounds usually did. His eyes were still too bright, like the fight hadn’t fully left him. For a second neither of us spoke. The room felt smaller with him in it.“I’m so sorry,” he said, voice rough. Then he turned and went into the bathroom without waiting for an answer. The door shut. Water started running.A few minutes ago I’d been sitting with Nessa on this same bed, trying to make sense of why witches and vampires were asking for me by name. What my part in any of this was supposed to be. She’d looked scared when she said it *you* like the word itself might summon something through the walls. Now the king of the palace had come through the door as a wolf first, then as a man covered in someone else’s blood or his own and he’d held me like the floor might
Silver hair. Pale eyes. Standing there in the middle of the fighting like the battle was a mild inconvenience, clothes barely touched, that same unreadable expression he’d worn in the forest.A few of the witches near the breach had gone still. One of them actually took a step back.“Ohh my God,” she whispered. “Is this really him?”Another answered under her breath, almost reverent. “It has to be. Look at the way the magic moved...”He looked at me like the dead and the dying were scenery. “Do you want my help or not?”“Go to hell,” I said.“Well.” A small, almost bored tilt of his head. “I’ll help. Not because of you, obviously.”He raised one hand. The air changed. Not a flash, not a roar just a sudden, deep pull, like the ground itself had been told to choose sides. Pressure rolled outward from his palm in a wave I could feel in my teeth. Every vampire still inside the wards was dragged backward as if hooked by invisible chains. Bodies slammed into the barrier and were thrown thro
Zayn Pov“There’s something else,” Tristan said as we moved through the inner walls toward the gate. His boots struck the stone hard. Torches along the corridor threw long shadows ahead of us. “I didn’t want to say it in front of her.”I kept walking. “What is it? Did you find anything on the golden eyes?”“Nothing on that yet.” He hesitated, jaw working once. “But the vampires and the witches. They’re demanding her. Your mate.”I stopped so hard the guards behind us nearly walked into my back.“What?”“They say if you want to save the kingdom, you hand her over.” Tristan’s voice stayed level, but his eyes weren’t. “That’s the price they’re naming out there. Her, or they keep tearing at the barrier until nothing’s left. They’re not even pretending it’s about territory anymore.”Anger hit so fast Leo surged under my skin, claws scraping the inside of my mind. The bond pulled tight toward the rooms we’d just left. Tristan was lucky he was only carrying the message.“I am never giving he
“I… I don’t know what to say.” Zayn scratched the back of his head, looking more lost than I’d ever seen him. “I don’t even know what you want from me right now.”“Then don’t say anything.” My voice came out thick. “Just leave me alone.”I turned and started for the door. My legs still felt unsteady, but I needed distance more than I needed to look steady.“Wait.” He moved after me. “Kiara, stop. We can’t do this right now. Not after what just happened to you. You’re not walking out of here while the threat is still out there.”I stopped with my hand on the frame and looked back at him. “What happened to me is my problem. You don’t have to worry about it. We both know there’s nothing we can do about the bond, so you do your thing and I’ll do mine. That way nobody gets hurt.”His jaw tightened. “Being angry at me doesn’t mean you get to walk straight into danger.” He let out a short breath. “I’m sorry, but you’re not leaving this room until whatever’s outside is dealt with.”I stared a
The room was dim. A lamp still burned somewhere to the side. My head throbbed in a slow, heavy way that made me not want to move. My mouth felt dry. For a second I just lay there, trying to remember why I was in bed. Nothing came. Only the ache and the quiet. Then I saw him.Zayn was in the chair beside the bed, head bowed, face resting against his hand. He looked like he had been there a long time. His shoulders were tight even in that position, like he was scared to even fall asleep, and for a second my heart tugged at me.I shifted a little under the blanket. His head snapped up so fast the chair creaked. He stared at me for a split second like he wasn’t sure he was seeing right, then the tension in his face broke.“Goddess sake,” he said, voice rough. “You’re finally awake.”He was out of the chair and leaning over me before I could answer. One hand braced on the mattress near my shoulder. His eyes moved over my face, checking, searching.“How do you feel? Does your head still hur
Kiara Pov Darkness held me first. Not the soft dark of sleep. This was heavier, thicker, like water that had forgotten how to let anyone surface. I tried to move and felt nothing that belonged to me. No hands. No breath. Only a vast, pressing quiet. Then the dark cracked.Light spilled through in broken pieces. A sky the color of ash. Cold wind cut across my face and brought the smell of smoke and wet earth. I was standing on a ridge I had never seen, looking down into a valley full of movement. People ran. Someone shouted orders I couldn’t catch. Steel rang against steel. A scream rose and stopped too fast.I didn’t know this place.I didn’t know these people. But my feet stayed planted like they had stood here before.A man’s voice carried up from the slope below, rough and urgent.“Hold the left side do you hear me? If they break through there, we’re finished!”Another voice answered, closer, a woman’s, sharp with exhaustion.“We’re already finished if the second line doesn’t arri
