Chapter 3 The P.E. "Accident"

The soccer practice ended, and the boys went to the lockers to shower and change themselves. Jonah was checking that nothing from his stuff was missing from his bag, he was very careful with his things. He checked his cellphone; his uniform and his hygiene things were all inside. He felt relieved, he trusted his friends but couldn't say the same about his other teammates.

"What did Amy Wilkes want?" Danny asked putting on some deodorant.

"Just wanted to thank me. For defending her today." Jonah answered drinking water.

" Yeah, everyone heard what you did for her today. Are you two a thing now?"  Brad Coleman mockingly asked.

Brad Coleman was the previous soccer captain before Jonah came to school. Jonah was told by Danny how Brad was so arrogant and cocky, as he would act as he was the only player on the team, and would hardly even pass the ball during games. However, everything changed when Jonah entered the team, his teammates obviously preferred him since he did play with his teammates as a the team they are and Coach Carter noticed that he also noticed Jonah was an inspiration to the others and decided to name him captain instead. 

Brad got upset when he heard the news, he spoke disappointed to Coach Carter and asked him not to give his position to the new guy. To his bad luck Coach Carter did not change his mind. Ever since then there was a dispute between Brad and Jonah, and even though Jonah tried to get along with him, Brad would always be a jerk to him. Eventually Jonah got tired of trying to get along with him and just decided to ignore him. However, Brad would always try to push his nerves. And this was no exception.

"Not your business, Coleman. But no, we are not a thing. " Jonah answered giving him an icy look.

"Okay, i thought you were having lady issues and that's why you were hanging out with a girl like Amy Wilkes. " Brad snorted.

Brad wanted to provoke him, to make Jonah hit him so Coach Carter had a reason to bench him  from the upcoming game. Jonah knew that was what he wanted and he was not going to fall in his trap, he was going to show him he was more mature than he was. 

"I have never had lady issues, i can date the girl i want. As simple as that."

"Are you really sure about that? I bet you can't make Amy Wilkes fall for you. "

Jonah couldn't believe the stupidities that were coming from his mouth. He learned from his mother, that girls should always be treated with respect, and has always had her words in his minds. That's why he never played with girls' feelings as other guys did, because he knew it was incorrect. He would never let his mother down with some stupid crap from Brad. 

"I won't play your stupid game, because I, unlike you I have grown up and i am not a kid. " He answered grabbing his stuff and passing next to him without even giving him a look. Brad turned his head staring at him angrily.

Amy and Sean arrived home, wanting to chill and have a sibling time. Since she was born he was always overprotective with her, but she was thankful to have him as a brother. She knew she could always count with him for anything she needed. 

" I need you to sign a permission note for me to go to a school trip. " Amy said to Sean as they ate for dinner the leftovers of the Chinese food they bought last night. 

"Where?"

"To the Amphibian and Reptile Laboratory, it's on Friday. " 

" I don't know, i have a bad feeling about this. " He answered taking his dish to the sink and washing it.

"Common Sean, if I don't go, I'll have to watch a boring documentary that lasts two hours. Plus writing an essay about it."

"Let me think about it. Go to sleep, I'll wash your dish."

"Good night, see you tomorrow.And please sign the permission, nothing bad will happen to me being there ." She said walking to her room.

Amy was surprised Sean would act that way. He was very overprotective with her since her parents died at the plane accident, but she never expected him to act like this with a school field trip. It was the first time he acted like this. She changed to her pjs and went to sleep hoping he would change his mind in the morning. As he drove her to school next morning, they were both quiet and Amy decided to break the silence.

" Have you thought in what i told you yesterday?"

" Teenagers get all crazy when going to those kinds of trips. When i was your age i remember some classmates took beer to a museum. It was a complete disaster as you can imagine."

" I get your point but I'll be only hanging with Dana. You know it."

"Fine. Before you leave the car pass me the permission so i can sign it."

When they arrived at school Sean signed the permission slip as he said, said goodbye to his sister and drove to his workplace. Dana and Amy had P.E. class at third period and went to change. As they did, they spoke about yesterday's events. They spoke in a low voice as they didn't want anyone else to listen to their conversation. 

"So tell me, did you spoke to Jonah?" Dana asked tying her shoe. 

"Yes, i did. I thanked him for defending me. " 

"That's all?" Dana asked disappointed. 

"What else do you wanted me to say?" 

"That you would give him your phone number or something like that. "

"Be serious Dana, that won't happen. " Amy answered shaking her head. 

"You don't know that ,don't underestimate yourself. You never know, he might ask you out someday."

Dana had that about her, always being optimistic about everything. Amy didn't think that would happen; he was friendly to her but nothing else. And she knew it would be wrong to mistake his kindness with having an interest on her. That week it was all about volleyball during PE class, Dana was more excited about the game since she knew how to play it but Amy was nervous since she was not too sporty. The two of them were placed on the same team, to their happiness. The teacher, Mrs. Scott, whistled and the game started. On the other side Jenna was looking at Amy in the same way a hungry lion looked at a gazelle, making Amy feel nervous. Jenna made a strike and the ball hit Amy on the forehead to which she fell to the floor. Amy would just touch her face. Dana rushed to her side checking on her friend. 

"Are you ok?" Dana asked concerned. 

"Ms. Murphy, please take her to the infirmary. " Mrs. Scott said to Dana.

As Amy walked she heard giggles from the other girls and heard Mrs. Scott shushing them. She placed her arm on Dana's shoulder who walked with her slowly.

"That bitch made it on purpose. She was hiding a smile after she hit you. " Dana said angrily.

"That makes no sense, i have not done anything to her. " Amy answered.

"We both know how Jenna Stone is, she doesn't needs a reason to pick on people. Or maybe she's upset because Jonah called her a bitch and blames you for it.But  she'll pay for this, don't worry."

"Don't do it, you can get in trouble later. She's not worth it. "

"You're my friend Amy, and this can't be left like this.What kind of friend would i be if i don't do anything? "

Amy knew how stubborn Dana could be, so she decided not to insist, she was not going to listen anyway. Dana took Amy to the infirmary and went back to the gymnasium. The nurse checked her sight and made her questions and checked on her for thirty minutes to see if she had or not a concussion. She did gave her a damp towel to place on her head as a bump was forming and wanted it to swell.  After she was done checking her she gave a sheet to her. It said Concussion Signs And Symptoms List Checklist. 

"What's this?" She asked.

"Give that to your parents. From what I see you have no concussion but it's important to be checking in case symptoms appear afterward. If they do appear it would be good to take to you a health care professional with experience that can evaluate concussions. "

Perfect. Sean wouldn't like this and would ask all type of questions to know what happened. With him being so overprotective it was hard for her to be a normal teen, as she wasn't allowed to go to many school activities since he considered them dangerous. She wondered how he would react after telling him what happened at the P.E. class. 

The nurse told her to go to class, so she walked slowly to the girl's dressing room. To her surprise Jonah came in the opposite direction and said hi to her. 

"Hi Wilkes, what are you doing here?" He asked stopping. 

"I was with the nurse. I got hit playing volleyball during P.E. class. "

He came closer to her and grabbed her face with his two hands checking her carefully. It was something she didn't expected him to do and made her nervous as not even the nurse had that physical contact with her. After a while he let her go. 

"Apply during all day ice compresses to that bump, you can use frozen peas or frozen meat. No more than twenty minutes. If you feel any headaches use acetaminophen."

"How do you know that much? "She asked. 

" I have had many accidents playing soccer. That's my experience talking. " He smiled. 

"I see, thanks for the help. I have to go change and go to class. Bye. " she said lowering her head a bit.

"Same, i was going to the bathroom and I must better hurry up or Mr. Jones will say i was taking to much time. See you, Wilkes. " he said shaking her shoulder.

Amy walked as fast as she could to the girls' dressing room, she was only focused on going to her next class and explaining to her next teacher what happened. She didn't noticed how Jonah turned his head to see her for a last time and smiled before entering to the bathroom. Somehow he caused an impression on her even though they had been talking for a few days.
