Chapter 2 The Charming Gentleman

Sean decided to have Chinese food for dinner, so he drove to the restaurant they liked the most. They asked for dumplings, sour and sweet chicken, and wonton. They ate dinner and at the same time they discussed their day, it was something they always did when they lived with their parents, and somehow, they kept that tradition even though it was only the two of them now. It made them feel closer to each other.

" So, my students got mad at me for having them write an essay since they said there's a huge party this weekend. I told them they have to have their priorities well defined. Can you believe it?

Sean was an English teacher at Western Miami University. He enjoyed his job a lot, however he would mention how troublesome his students were. Amy had a great admiration for her brother since he was hardworking and determined: Sean had fifteen years old, and she was ten when their parents died on a plane crash. They were having an important business on Boston and their presence was required. After that Sean and Amy went to live with their aunt Beth, their mother's sister a divorced woman. However, the siblings were not happy since it was clear she saw them as a burden, two more mouths to feed when she had three sons on her own. Their parents' will was read and it was explained that both Sean and Amy would receive their half million trust fund when they were both eighteen, and she felt relieved as it meant her nephew and niece would eventually be responsible of themselves.

Sean inmediately understood she didn't want them there and secretly earned money from small jobs he had, like tutoring other students at school, or any part time jobs he could take. A few days later after he turned eighteen, he took Amy with him moving to a small apartment, enough for the two of them which was still their present home. It was not something easy, but he knew it was for the best for them to be on their own. Since they have lived together and were fine, not needing of their aunt.

"And what else happened today?" Sean asked grabbing a dumpling with his chopsticks.

"Sean, do you think i'm pretty?" She asked.

"Where does this question comes from?" He asked surprised then spoke again. " I get it, it's because of a boy, right?" he said placing down his food.

"Yes. " She answered nervously scratching her arm.

"What's his name?" Sean asked placing his two hands together.

"Jonah Parker. But relax, it's not as if he likes me. And he won't ever like me."

"Don't tell me that dude said something rude to you because if he did i will break his face. "

"No, he's a popular guy. He will never look at me that way. No guy ever looks at me. " She shrinked her shoulders.

"Amy, any guy will be lucky to be with you. However, this is not the time, you're too young to date." He said after biting a wonton.

"And according to you, when should i date?" She asked placing a hand on her cheek.

"When i die and add three more days. " He answered.

"Was that a joke? I didn't find it funny."

"I know you're laughing in your inside, you just won't admit it. Let's pay the check and let's go home. "

Sean was sociable, he always had been since she had memory. Amy thought he would not quite understand how she felt about dating, as he had no trouble with it. She was hoping that someday she could ask him for advice freely and not feel shame because of it.

When Jonah Parker arrived home, he looked through his stuff on his closet, looking out for his yearbook from last year, when he was the new student. He looked thought the pictures of all his classmates and his eyes stopped on Amy Wilke's picture. It was her, her face expression was the same she had today when speaking to him, as if she was scared. He tried to remember her in his sophomore classes, and he understood that they weren't classmates last year, until now. He looked at her picture again. She was a pretty girl with no doubt, and he couldn't explain himself why he felt curious about her since it was the first he spoke to her. Usually, girls flirted back by waving their hair or smile back at him when he spoke to them, however her reaction was way different this afternoon when they spoke. She barely had eye contact with him, and yet she had hypnotizing green eyes.

That night he went to bed thinking in the mystery that surrounded Amy Wilkes, and what he would have to do to solve it. She was not like other girls, with no doubt. Next morning, he took a shower and got ready to go to school. He remembered it was Wednesday and grabbed his soccer uniform and placed it inside his backpack. He grabbed an apple and walked to his car. When he arrived at school he entered to his Biology class, and there he saw her. Amy Wilkes was seated on the back reading her Biology book, he forgot this year they shared three classes together as they also were classmates in Literature too. Ms. Gray entered the class asking everyone to be quiet.

"Good morning class. As you know we have been learning about Reptiles in class and i have managed to get the school to let us go out on a field trip to the Amphibian and Reptile Laboratory on Friday. I'll hand out the permission slips for your parents to sign them. " She said walking through the rows to hand out the sheets.

In that moment Amy raised her hand and Ms. Gray saw her.

"Yes Ms. Wilkes, do you have a question?"

"Do we have to take a notebook and pen?"

"Yes, you'll be writing on a report. In fact take your phones to take pictures as well. Thanks for reminding me." She answered.

"God Amy, couldn't you shut your mouth as you always do? You are so stupid." Jenna said

"Seriously Jenna, why do you have to act like a bitch? Get over yourself" Jonah asked turning his face to see her.

"Mr. Parker, i will ask you politely not to use that vocabulary in my class or i'll have to send you to the principal's office. "

The rest of the class was uncomfortable for everyone, everyone was silent during the class. After the class Ms. Gray asked Amy what her situation at home was, to which she explained that her Sean was her guardian. After everything was cleared, she went to the cafeteria to speak to Dana about what happened at Biology, to which Dana was pissed.

"What an idiot, I'm so glad Jonah defended you. "

"Yeah, he did. I didn't expect that."

"Have you thanked him already?"

"No. " Amy answered shaking her head.

"You should. It's the correct thing to do, plus you can have a reason to speak to him. " She said with a smirk.

"When? The soccer team has practice today and Sean will be coming for me as soon as school is finished. "

"So you know his schedule? I had no idea." Dana said leaning back on her arms and crossing her arms.

Amy's phone started vibrating and she checked it. It was a text message from Sean.

"Who texted you?"

"Sean. He says he has a meeting today and will be coming a bit later for me. "

"See? It's the perfect chance. Go look for him later. "

"You really think so?" Amy asked.

"Totally. Just talk to him, he won't bite you. " Dana said drinking from her seven up.

Jonah entered to the court and reunited with his teammates and best friends Trent and Danny, who were kicking a ball between them. Coach Carter was not seen there but he must be on his way, probably talking with the principal. They had a match in three weeks and whenever a match was getting closer, he would pressure the team harder. However, all of them were used to it already.

" Hey Jonah. " Trent said.

"Hey guys. "Jonah answered.

"We have to know; did you really call Jenna a bitch?" Danny asked tying his shoes.

"So everyone already knows what happened?" Jonah asked combing his hair backwards.

"You know how fast gossip runs in this school. So yeah, everyone knows how you called her the b word. I thought you felt something for her since you dated. For some time" Trent admitted.

"It was only one date i had with her, and it was the worst date ever. And she deserved it, she was been obnoxious to Amy Wilkes for no damn reason. "Jonah answered.

"Amy Wilkes? The quiet girl?" Danny asked stretching his arms.

"Do you have a thing for her now?" Trent asked.

"No, i don't . I was just being nice, that's all. " Jonah explained making a double knot on his sneakers.

"She's over there, guess she must be looking for you." Danny said pointing to the other side of the metal fence that surrounded the soccer court. Jonah turned and saw his friend was right. Amy was standing there making him a sign with her index and thumb to come for a moment.

"I'll be right back. " He said running towards her.

"Hi. " Amy said when he was there with her.

"Hey Wilkes, how can i help you?" He spoke.

She gave a huge sigh before speaking. She almost feels like throwing up in that moment, hoping that wouldn't happen or otherwise she would feel embarrased.

"I wanted to thank you for defending me today, that was really kind of you."

He noticed she was nervously playing with her hands as she spoke. He thought she looked cute doing that.

"You're welcome, Jenna was being rude to you. I hope she won't mess with you again. "

"Me too. That's all I wanted to say, I don't want to interrupt your practice. Goodbye. "

"Goodbye Wilkes, see you tomorrow."

Jonah started walking to where his teammates where and unexpectedly turned to see her and then hurried. What he didn't know is that Jenna was too far away and saw him talking with Amy and was not too happy to see them together.  What was with the two of them getting so close? She would find out if there was something happening between them.
