KAEL.

My chest burned.

Not from a physical wound, but from the memory of Lyra’s eyes.

When I’d told her to stay away from my daughter and me, I’d seen her soul fracture right in front of me. For a split second, the man who used to love her more than his own life had screamed at me to reach out. To pull her into my arms and bury my face in the curve of her neck and let the world disappear. I wanted to apologise and I wanted to sob in her arms.

Then, the smell of smoke and the memory of my Family’s screams curdled my blood.

She killed them, I reminded myself, my jaw tightening until it ached, she destroyed everything. Do not let the veil fool you, do not let the hurt in her eyes make you forget the blood on her hands.

I hardened my resolve, pulling my cold and stoic mask back into place as I reached Freya’s door. I pushed it open an inch, expecting to see the rhythmic rise and fall of her chest in sleep. Instead, she was sitting up, her small hands fiddling with the edge of her blanket.

“Freya,” I whispered, stepping inside. “Why are you still awake, little bird?”

She looked up, her large eyes reflecting the moonlight. She didn’t speak, she began to sign, her movements fluid and hesitant. I couldn’t sleep. The air felt heavy.

I sat on the edge of her bed, my heady softening in a way it only did for her.

“Are you okay? Did….did that woman try to hurt you?”

Freya shook her head quickly. She paused, her fingers hovering in the air as if debating whether to tell me her thoughts. Then, she signed again, and the words made my breath hitch in my throat.

“She didn’t hurt me. She was kind. I like the woman in the veil, Father. She feels familiar.”

A surge of white-hot protective rage flared in my gut, warring with a sickening sense of betrayal. Familiar? Lyra was a wildfire that had leveled our home. She was the monster who killed your mother, but I couldn’t say that.

“No, Freya,” I said, my voice sharper than I intended. I caught myself and took a breath, softening my tone, though the edge remained. “You must stay away from her. Do you understand me? She is dangerous and don’t let the veil fool you.”

Freya looked at me with that unnerving childhood intuition, but she gave a small and slow nod. I leaned down, kissing her forehead, lingering there for a moment to ground myself. “Sleep now. I’m right down the hall.”

I walked out, my pace quickening, the moment I crossed the threshold of my own bedroom and the lock clicked into place, I broke.

My knees gave out. I hit the floor hard, the impact jarring my bones, but I didn’t care. I stayed there, forehead pressed against the cold stone, gasping for air that wouldn’t come. Out there, I was a King, a formidable fucking force, but in here? In here, I was a hollowed-out shell, crumbling under the weight of a thousand things.

Then it started.

A low, guttural snarl vibrated in my chest, but it wasn’t mine. It was my wolf, again.

“Traitor.” The beast hissed in the back of my mind.

The pain hit like a physical blow. It wasn’t a transformation, it was an internal flaying. My wolf began to claw at my insides, trying to tear its way out, or perhaps, tear me apart from within. I let out a choked scream, my fingers digging into the rug, my nails drawing blood from my own palms.

It was a chaotic sensory, nightmare. I saw flashes of Lyra laughing in the summer sun, I saw the High Priestess standing cold and distant, I saw my mother’s lifeless eyes. My wolf lunged again, a mental bite that felt like hot iron searing my ribs. I rolled onto my back, arching my spine as my bones creaked and groaned under the pressure of a shift that I wouldn’t allow to happen.

“Stop.” I wheezed.

But my wolf wouldn’t stop. He was raging, confused and it was taking all that agony out on me. Why? What did I even do to him?

Then a thought appeared in my mind. It was her.

It had to be her. She was the one who caused all these things.

This had been happening for years, ever since the two nights after she left. But ever since she stayed back on my lands, it got worse. Very worse. She was the poison, she was the reason my own soul was trying to kill me.

I guess killing my family wasn’t enough for her, she still needed to kill me too.

“Damn you.” I gasped, clutching my stomach as a fresh wave of agony ripped through me. I crawled toward the wardrobe, my vision blurring with tears and blood. “Damn you, Lyra.”

I needed the one thing that could quiet the beast, the one thing I hated myself for keeping. Behind the heavy clothes in the wardrobe was the hidden scrap of her old garment, the one she wore before she left.

I reached out, my fingers trembling, inches away from the wood. But my strength failed. My arm fell uselessly to my side, splashing into the crimson pool growing beneath me.

The world tilted. The last thing I felt was the cold floor against my cheek and the taste of copper in my mouth.

“Damn you……”I whispered into the darkness, before the blackness finally took me.

LYRA’s POV. I don’t remember leaving the gardens. One moment, I was standing beneath the moonlight, watching Kael hold the little girl against his chest as though she were the most precious thing in his world. Next, I was inside my chambers. The door closed behind me with a soft click, but the sound felt deafening. I stood there for several seconds, staring at nothing. Father. The word wouldn’t leave my head. Neither would the way she had run into his arms, the way Kael had caught her without hesitation, the way his entire face had changed when he looked at her. I had never seen that expression on his face before. Not even when he looked at me. My throat tightened. My hands shook as I gripped my silk robes, trying to ground myself, but the world felt like it was dissolving around me. I turned away from the door and walked toward my bed, but my legs suddenly felt too weak to carry me. I sank into the edge, my hands trembling in my lap. A daughter. Kael had a daughter. My e

LYRA. “Father.” The word was sharp and clear, slicing through the fragile composure I tried so hard to maintain. I stood there in a state of absolute awe and soul crushing shock. My heart, which had been beating for him in secret all this time, felt like it was being squeezed by an icy fist. While I was wasting away in the temple, suffering through every lonely night and praying for a glimpse of the man I once knew, he had been building a life. He hadn’t just moved on, he had a child with another woman. Was I really that easy to forget? Kael didn’t even look at me at first. His entire world was centered on the small girl in his arms. He leaned down, pressing a lingering, affectionate kiss to the top of her head, his voice dropping into a low, soothing murmur I had once thought was only reserved for me. “Freya, what are you doing out of your room?” He asked, his brow furrowing with genuine concern as he ticked a stray lock of hair behind her ear. For a second I felt an immense

LYRA. Sleep refused to come. I had spent the better part of an hour lying beneath the heavy wool blankets, staring at the darkness above me. Every time I closed my eyes, I felt the phantom heat of Kael’s fingers against my wrist. The way his gaze had seared through me. I saw him each damned time. And the funniest thing was that I didn’t see the man who sat at the head of the council table, I didn’t see the Alpha King. Not the cold man who had looked at me as though my existence offended him. I saw the man who had caught me. His arms had closed around me before I could fall, and for one treacherous heartbeat, my body had remembered him before my mind could stop it.My skin hummed with the electricity of our encounter. It was a terrifying, and addictive pull. Even after all these years of hiding, one touch from him had made me feel more alive than a decade of safety ever could. Driven by a restless energy, I threw a fur-lined cloak over my nightgown and stepped out of my chambers,

CHAPTER FIVE.KAEL’s POV. I woke up calling her name. Again. My eyes snapped open, and darkness surrounded me. For several seconds, I lay still, breathing heavily as I stared at the ceiling. Another dream, another night where my mind had betrayed me, I turned my head toward the grandfather clock. Past midnight. Again. I sat up slowly. The dream was already fading, but I could still remember her face. She had been standing beneath the moon. Just as she had eight years ago. Her silver dress had moved with the wind, her hair falling over her shoulders. She had been smiling at me. Not the smile she gave me yesterday. Not the cold, polite expression of a stranger. The smile she used to give me, the one that belonged to me. Then she had reached for me, and every time, I woke up before I could touch her. I dragged a hand over my face. Pathetic. Eight years. Eight years and I was still dreaming about the same woman, the woman who murdered my whole family. I should be dreaming about

  • The King's Rejected Priestess   WELCOME BACK.

CHAPTER FOUR. LYRA’s POV. The room went silent. “What’s going on?” Someone asked. I stared at Kael. He stared back. My fingers curled beneath the table, and I refused to look away. Kael’s expression remained unreadable. Only his eyes had changed, the hatred in them was unmistakable. Someone at the far end of the table whispered. “Lyra?” Took them long enough. Another voice followed. “Is that really her?” Another person asked. “The girl who was rejected by the Alpha King?”“The Moon Goddess preserves us….”The murmurs spread around the chamber. But I kept my eyes on Kael, he didn’t seem to hear them. Or perhaps, he didn’t care. His jaw tightened once. That was all. High Elder Magnus rose slowly. “Alpha King, perhaps we should—““Leave.” His voice was calm. “She can’t leave, Alpha King. She’s here to help us find answers a—““I meant all of you except her, leave.” He said in that calm voice. Maybe they thought he didn’t mean it because everybody just froze around the tab
