Chapter 5 | Information

Alpha Chase Croft

I sent Lauren and Arie home after we waited another 3 hours and never saw her parents. Arie thanked me and Lauren mumbled incoherently, lost in her need for sleep.

It wasn’t until the next morning when I saw Walter Sinclair walk into the hospital with another man in a business suit by his side.

My eyebrows furrow, that’s an odd sight to see. I wonder where his wife is, I haven’t seen her since before the blood draws last night.

I continue to wait and after half an hour I watch as the two of them leave and I can’t help but notice that Walter looked distressed. I wonder what’s going on.

What if Marinette lost the baby?

No, if that happened, I bet he would be there comforting his daughter. I huff as I cross my arms and continue to wait. I don’t know what else to do, I can’t go back home, not without her. I’ve waited far too long for my mate to leave without her.

Her scent wafts into the room and I look up, but she’s not in here. There’s a woman walking away in scrubs that smells like her. It must’ve been her nurse.

I stand up and rush towards her as I say, “Excuse me, Miss?”

She turns around and tilts her head to the side as she says softly, “You’re a werewolf.”

I nod in confirmation as I state, “I am.”

She smiles softly and asks, “My name is Evelyn, how can I help you?”

“Well, Evelyn, I met my mate last night, but she ended up coming here due to being in labor. I haven’t been able to see her. I was hoping maybe you’d be able to help me.”

Her lips press together in a line, and I wonder why she seems conflicted. Because we’re both werewolves she understands the need and want to be with your mate. So, she knows that me not knowing what happened to mine would be driving me and my wolf crazy. She looks me up and down before huffing as she turns back towards where she came and states, “Follow me.”

I keep up with her as she gets into an elevator. Once the doors close, she says, “Look, if you plan to reject the girl then promise me, you’ll do it later, I don’t think she could handle the pain right now.”

Mates are a sacred thing, although rejections happen, they are heavily frowned on in our community. Something must be horribly wrong for her to think I would reject my mate. My eyebrows furrow and I ask, “What are you talking about? Why would I reject her?”

She sighs, “I’m only telling you this because you may be able to help her.”

“What are you talking about?” I ask as I feel exasperated from waiting for her to explain.

“She’s a hybrid. Half vampire half wolf, her vampire side awoke last night after her dying.”

My eyes widen, “She died?”

The woman nods and says, “I don’t believe her wolf side is awake. She doesn’t seem to know anything about our world.”

I bite my lower lip and nod and she says, “I can’t give you any more information about her, but please if you are going to reject her then wait. She’s been through enough without the feeling of rejection.”

I nod, “If I do then I’ll wait.” My wolf growls at me for even considering rejecting her, but… she’s a hybrid! I thought vampires were extinct, I don’t understand how she’s alive.

I ask, “Is there anything I need to know about her being a hybrid? I’ve never met or even heard of hybrids before.”

She smiles softly as we get off the elevator and says, “Most people haven’t. All you need to know is that she needs blood to survive. Her eyes will turn red the longer she goes without and if bloodlust starts then she won’t be able to control it. Any blood will do but human blood tastes the best for her… actually since you’re her mate then your blood would be the best.”

I nod and ask, “How long can she go without?”

She shrugs as she stops in front of a door and says, “It varies based on the person and how much energy they’re using. Now, do you want to meet her?”

I nod eagerly, and she asks, “What’s your name?”

“Chase… Chase Croft.”

Her eyebrows raise as she says, “Alpha of the North River Pack, impressive.”

I smirk from her comment as she opens the door. The smell of maple and cedarwood fills my nose and makes my wolf purr, but I also notice another scent… it also smells like maple, but it’s mixed with something else like… blueberries.

The woman who led me in here says, “Marinette, I have someone to introduce you to.”

I walk behind her as she pulls the curtain back and I see Marinette rubbing her eyes before looking at us. She lets out a small yawn as she waves and says, “Hi.”

The nurse says, “Marinette, this is Chase Croft. He is from the werewolf world, and I thought he could help answer any questions you may have about that world.”

Marinette scrunches her nose and then nods and says, “Okay, thanks. Could you bring me Marigold?”

The woman grabs the baby out of its bassinet, and I realize that’s where the blueberry scent is coming from. Marinette smiles as she holds the baby in her arms and the woman dismisses herself. Marinette glances at me and says, “So… Chase Croft.” The way she says my name makes butterflies erupt in my stomach. She looks me up and down and says, “That name sounds familiar, have I met you before?”
