We started walking back to my place. He stalked behind me as I pushed my bike. I still didn't believe any of this was real. Werewolves were stories we learned about in fairytales. I didn't think I would ever be a part of that. Maybe I should put my necklace back on? Maybe this was why Ma and Pa were so adamant about me not taking it off?

"Please don't put it back on! I'm finally free. I don't want to be caged away," Evelyn pleaded with me.

"I'm not used to this. Please stop! My head hurts."

I must have said it aloud because Krewe looked at me suspiciously.

"I'm sorry. Figured since you're a wolf too, that this would all be normal," I glared at him.

"I didn't mean to look at you like that. It's all very normal to hear her in your head and have conversations. Don't be alarmed."

I stopped walking and put my bike down. I then walked up to Krewe and looked up into his eyes.

"Look, this is new for me. My body aches, and my head hurts. What might be normal to you is not so normal to me. This is freaking me out. I've only read about beasts like this in stories. The stories make us believe we're monsters. So here I am, trying to accept the fact that I'm a monster, walking with another monster, trying to decifer if this is all real," Tears started to flow down my cheeks. I didn't want him to see me like this, but I couldn't hold them back anymore.

"Sawyer, I didn't think of it like that. I'm sorry," he said as he put his head down, like he was ashamed. He twitched like he wanted to reach out and touch me.

I stepped back, "You should be. I didn't ask for this."

I picked my bike up and started walking again. Although, as we walked past a parking lot, Krewe grabbed my bike and ushered it to a car as I stood there staring.

"Are you coming? I'd rather drive you home so your feet don't get sore from walking barefoot."

I looked down at my bare feet and looked back up at the car. I felt defeated, so I walked over to the car and got into the passenger side. He loaded up the bike into the trunk the best he could. Had he been looking for me this whole time?

"He's our mate! Of course, he was watching over us. What a man!"

"Okay, here's the deal, Evelyn. I don't know what a mate is, and I don't know how to work this whole, talking to my wolf, thing. So can you take it easy on me? Maybe let everything sink in before speaking to me again?"

"Fine! But don't cage me up again. Let me stay out, and I will behave. Give you your space," she said with a sigh.

Krewe got into the driver's side, "Ready?"

"Yes. I will put my address into your GPS," as I started playing around with the screen in his car. It almost looked like he had a smirk on his face. I wonder what for?

He drove off in the direction of my home. I was hoping that since the school day wasn't over, that no one would be home. It would be better that way.

As we pulled up, there were no signs of anyone being home. I sighed in relief. I got out of the passenger seat and rounded the car to grab my bike that Krewe was taking out. I parked it on the side of the house before walking to the front door.

"You coming in? Or do I have to invite you in like a vampire?"

Krewe gave a small laugh, "I'm coming."

I lead him into the house and up the stairs to my bedroom. He seemed way too large to be in here. He reached the ceiling, and his body was as wide as the door frames. He was very muscular. I'm sure all the girls threw themselves at him. He was handsome. He had some dark stubble on him, and his hair was styled with short sides and longer hair on top. I wouldn't be one of those girls, though. Plus, I was still seeing Tom.

He looked around my room like he was memorizing everything.

"So you want to explain what's going on? Give me a bit of a history lesson here?" I said as I sat on my bed.

He sat next to me before speaking.

"I don't know exactly why you don't know or shifted so late."

"Shifting?"

"Yes, when you go between your human and wolf form. It's called shifting. We all shift for the first time at the age of 16. That pendant you have on your necklace has some meaning. I'm not sure what, but I'm sure if we took it to a witch, we could have more answers."

"So now there's witches, too? Did you laugh earlier because there's actually vampires as well?"

"There are, but we don't usually associate with them often."

"That's a relief," I said with a hint of sarcasm.

"Anyways... That necklace was obviously trying to hide you from this world. We should figure out why. Obviously, you have new adoptive parents, so they might not know anything."

"Their actually my aunt and uncle. They took me in when I was 3. That's when my parents died."

"Do you know anything about them?"

"Not too much. They lived elsewhere, about a couple hours away. Their names were Felix and Sasha Moon. So I guess my last name is actually Moon, too."

"Moon. That sounds familiar. So maybe your aunt and uncle are wolves too!"

"Why would they hide this from me then?"

"I don't know. My father is the leader of our pack," my eyebrows raised at that, which made him stop to think. "A pack is a group of wolves. It's actually quite large. It's almost like a small city deep within the forest where no one would even look. Our pack is one of the biggest. Anyways, my father is the leader, maybe he would know more about your parents. Maybe they even came from our pack since we're about a couple of hours away."

"You think you can ask him? I mean, if they were trying to keep me from this life, maybe it was for a reason. They always mentioned it was for my protection. Maybe their protecting me from something?"

"I will make sure to ask cautiously. I won't give too much information away. My father is a very caring man. I'm sure he would be happy to help."

I smiled as my phone started to ring. I looked at the screen and saw it was Tom calling.

"I'm sorry. I'm going to take this."

"Yeah, no problem."

"Hey Tom! What's up?"

"You doing okay? Why aren't you at school? It's almost practice."

"I wasn't feeling well and came home to relax. I will head back soon."

"Okay, babe. I'm glad you're feeling better. See you soon."

I hung up and sat back on the bed. I put my head in my hands.

"How do I get used to this? There's just so many noises and smells. My head wants to explode."

"Just don't fight it. Let it happen and embrace it. Your wolf will help. Let her."

"I don't know if I can."

He grabbed my hand in that moment, and there were sparks. It felt warm and relaxing.

"Sawyer, just trust your wolf and yourself. You will be alright. Try to drown it all out unless you specifically want to hear something."

"Thanks, Krewe. I appreciate this. It still doesn't feel real, though."

"No problem."

We stayed like that in quiet for at least 5 minutes.

"Anyways, I should probably get ready and go back to school for practice."

"Practice?"

"Oh, something you don't know?" I said with a sly smile. "I'm a cheerleader. So I cheer on the football players when they play. You should come out one night to check out a game."

"Maybe I will."

"You can watch practice if you want?"

"Sure. Then I have to head out."

"No problem! It will take me only a couple of minutes to get ready."

I spent the day packing. I never got to ask how I would explain things to my friends. Would I just disappear to never be seen again? I would have to finalize everything and get our stories straight. Ma walked in. "I'm so sorry I couldn't protect you more." "Ma, what are you talking about? I think you have done a great job already. I love you guys so much." "I love you too, baby. But you shouldn't be leaving like this. I should be with you. Protecting you." "You are by sending me to live with Leila. I'm 18. I need to grow up. Whether it was from me being a wolf or me going off to college. At least I figured out everything here and not alone, at some random school, with random people." "I'm sorry I kept this from you." "Don't. It's alright." "It's who you are, though. I didn't allow you to be your true self. I suppressed your wolf, I hid you away." "It's alright. I'm coming to terms with this new world. I honestly thought I was a freak. Now I feel like I actually fit

I watched as she left. I couldn't stop her, even though everything in me wanted to. I wouldn't allow myself to. She needed to find out and know the truth. As long as Max and Liz didn't know, she would be safe. "Why did you let her leave!" Max yelled at me. "I had to. I can't keep her from finding out." "Who will protect her as you say? What happened? Why can't you tell us?" "If you knew and my father found out, Sawyer and her family would be in grave danger. Do you understand!? Or are you just too dumb to realize the consequences of an Alpha command?" "So instead, we have to stand around and do shit all to protect her?!" "Yes!" "I can't do that! If you won't fight for your mate, then I will!" "Max, stop!" "Why!?" "We have to let her go. She has to find out. She needs to know who she is. This is a lot on her already. My father isn't the man you think he is. I will take over the pack, and I will protect Sawyer while making everything right again." "So what? We los

They all just stared at me. I felt uncomfortable. "Can someone say something?" "Sorry. Sawyer, I just haven't figured out what we should do. I just know I have to keep you safe," Krewe said as he came to kneel beside me and take my hand. "Safe from what?" I felt so confused. What happened? Why was I being kept away from what I was? What did Krewe know? "I can't tell you. Not yet." "So what do I do?" "I'm not sure." "This isn't fair! This is all so new to me. I want answers, I want to know why I've been kept a secret all these years. I don't get it, and if you won't tell me, then I guess I will go home and ask my aunt and uncle." I got up and stormed upstairs to grab my belongings. I didn't want to be here anymore. I didn't want to feel this pain anymore. I felt betrayed as everyone had this deep secret about me, and I was being left out. It was my life. I should have a say. I went back downstairs and headed for the door. I could hear them all whispering. "Sawyer, pl

  • The Last Moon   Chapter 18

I felt like I had the best sleep of my entire life. I felt warm and rested until I felt a hard body pressed up against me. I stretched and turned and saw Krewe sleeping behind me. I remember laying down with him, but when did he get naked? I quickly checked to make sure I wasn't naked, but no, thankfully, I still had my clothes on. I lifted the blanket and crawled out of the bed, and grabbed the blanket on the end of the bed to drap over him. As soon I had it on top of him, he woke. "Good morning." His voice was still deep and raspy from sleep. "You do realize you're naked?" "I am? Oh yea, I went for a run last night." He said it so casually like it shouldn't matter. I've never been with a naked man. It does matter. I didn't grow up with wolves. This is just awkward. I could feel my cheeks heating up the longer I just stared, dumbfounded. Talk Sawyer, talk. "Well, don't you think you would be more comfortable with some clothes on?" "Oh, shit, yea. I hope I didn't freak y

I could feel the soft rise and fall of her chest as she slept peacefully beside me. I took a look at the time on my watch. It was only 10 PM, I could make it home in time to ask my father more questions and make it back before the morning. "Dad, I need to speak with you. I'm going to run back. Let the night patrol know it's only me running through the pack lands." "I will be in my office. I've got a lot to finish up still. See you soon, son." I closed off the mindlink as I snuck away from the bed and out of the room. Max stood there in the hallway with a glass of water. "What the fuck man?" "This isn't the time to talk. I have to head home quickly." "No! You said I could go for it. You said you didn't mind. You just can't let me have anything, can you? Mr. Alpha has to have everything? Fuck you, man." "That's not it, okay, Max? I will explain everything in the morning." Max shook his head as he went back into his room, "Whatever. I'm done." I felt bad, but I knew I

  • The Last Moon   Chapter 16

Krewe had set me up in a room for the night next to his. He provided me with a t-shirt of his to sleep in, and Liz gave me a bunch of options for the next day. My aunt and uncle believed my story, and I was happy to stay. Krewe and I had kept our distance the rest of the evening, and I had made an effort to avoid Max as well. Krewe had asked to keep things under wrap until tomorrow when we would speak with Max and Liz. I agreed to his plan. I slipped into the t-shirt, only keeping my panties on underneath. It was a thinner material in white. So it was a bit risqué. However, no one would see me. Until there was a knock at my door. I opened the door and peeked out. "Oh, hey, Max! What can I do for you?" He stood there with no shirt on and only his pajama trousers. "Just wanted to make sure you were settling in okay for the night." He looked shy but amazing! He just didn't compare to Krewe the more I let my feelings take over. "I am, thanks! I was just about to lay do
