The morning after the party, I had woken up early to talk with my father at breakfast. He was a busy man. He was Alpha of one of the biggest packs in the area. Sometimes, it seemed like there were just too many wolves in the pack for him to control at times. We always had issues with fights breaking out among our pack. I never understood why, though.
I was really young when my father decided to expand our borders and take in more wolves. He always said there were so many wolves out there with no home or direction. He just wanted to help them all. I admired that about him. Maybe that was Sawyers case. Maybe her family never had a pack to live amongst, which is why they chose to live with humans. I headed for the dining room. Dad sat there drinking his coffee while waiting to be served. Mom was sitting next to him, looking over some documents. "Morning son! Come join us!" his voice boomed through the room. He always knew how to draw attention. "Good morning, Father. Mother," I rounded the table and leaned in to give my mother a kiss on the cheek before sitting next to my father. "You're up early," she eyed me carefully. "There was something I was hoping to discuss with you both." "What is it?" my father asked. "On our way to the lake house for a party the other night, we met a wolf. Close to my age, but she didn't seem to know she was, and her scent seemed off too. It was almost like a mix of human and wolf. She worked at a diner in the human town." "Not uncommon for some wolves to live amongst the humans. You know that." The waiters came in with plates of food. My father started to dig in. "Continue," he said. "Well, she wore this pendant. I think it may be the reason she doesn't know she's a wolf." "What sort of pendant?" he said as he placed a fork full of food into his mouth. "It was a wolf with a full moon in the background." My father suddenly started choking, so I patted his back, "What do you mean it was a wolf with a full moon?" "I mean, it was a wolf with a full moon in the background. What's wrong with you? You okay, father?" "Yea, the food just went down wrong. Have to watch myself these days, I am getting older," he nervously laughed. My mother looked at him with concern written all over her face. "Tell me more about this girl." "Well, I don't know much. I caught her at a party the other night so I could ask her more about the necklace. She didn't know much about it. That's why I think she may have been given it to keep her from shifting. Like someone wanted her to blend in with the humans. Maybe her mother and father? I just can't figure out what pack it would have been from." "Son, I don't think that's for you to worry about. Forget about it. I would also leave her alone," he looked at me sternly. I knew he wouldn't want me to see her again. He didn't want anything to do with the humans. He was concerned about protecting the pack. "I was thinking of going to the lake house again today. Maybe spend the week there with Max and Elizabeth?" "As long as you go straight there. No more visiting this diner. You should have plenty of supplies at the house." I stood up to leave. "I don't want you visiting this girl anymore. Okay?" If he knew she was my mate, he would freak out. He didn't need to know this, so I kept it to myself. "I promise!" I said with my fingers crossed behind my back. What he didn't know wouldn't harm him. I'd get to the bottom of this. "Goodbye darling! Have fun at the lake house." "Thanks, mother!" With that, I took off to my room to pack a bag. The lake house was closer to the human town. I mindlinked Max and Elizabeth to tell them to meet me there later that evening. That should buy me enough time to stop into the town and watch her for a bit. Give me a chance to observe and catch an opportunity to speak with her. Once I finished packing, I left. The drive would take me a couple of hours to get there. That should be plenty of time, especially for a weekday. She was probably at school. I'd park the car off in a plaza parking lot and then walk over to the woods, which seemed to surround the town and watch for her by the school. She was my mate and I had to know more. She smelt good and looked amazing. The most beautiful girl I had ever seen. She had long golden brown locks that had been sunkissed by the sun. She had a slender, althetic build but curves in all the right places. Her skin was slightly tanned, and her lips a beautiful shade of pink. I don't think she knew just how beautiful she was. If she did, she wouldn't let a guy treat her the way that guy did at the party. Who cheated on a girl as beautiful as her? I'd never let her slip out of my grasp if she was mine. Then again, I did have a girlfriend back at the pack. Her name was Shiloh, or Shy for short. We've been together for a couple of years now, and my parents were fond of her. I'm sure they wouldn't approve of Sawyer, not with the way they reacted this morning. With Saywer not even aware of being a wolf, maybe I wouldn't have a problem letting her go. "She's ours and worth pursuing." "Okay, Tye," I said just to calm him down. "You should break up with Shy now and focus on finding Sawyer. She needs us. We need to mark her and make her ours." "That's not happening anytime soon. Especially since she's unaware that she's a wolf." "In due time, Krewe. She will know, and you better listen to me. Otherwise, she will leave and be someone else's mate." "Yea, yea," I shoved him back to the darkness of my mind and focused on driving.I spent the day packing. I never got to ask how I would explain things to my friends. Would I just disappear to never be seen again? I would have to finalize everything and get our stories straight. Ma walked in. "I'm so sorry I couldn't protect you more." "Ma, what are you talking about? I think you have done a great job already. I love you guys so much." "I love you too, baby. But you shouldn't be leaving like this. I should be with you. Protecting you." "You are by sending me to live with Leila. I'm 18. I need to grow up. Whether it was from me being a wolf or me going off to college. At least I figured out everything here and not alone, at some random school, with random people." "I'm sorry I kept this from you." "Don't. It's alright." "It's who you are, though. I didn't allow you to be your true self. I suppressed your wolf, I hid you away." "It's alright. I'm coming to terms with this new world. I honestly thought I was a freak. Now I feel like I actually fit
I watched as she left. I couldn't stop her, even though everything in me wanted to. I wouldn't allow myself to. She needed to find out and know the truth. As long as Max and Liz didn't know, she would be safe. "Why did you let her leave!" Max yelled at me. "I had to. I can't keep her from finding out." "Who will protect her as you say? What happened? Why can't you tell us?" "If you knew and my father found out, Sawyer and her family would be in grave danger. Do you understand!? Or are you just too dumb to realize the consequences of an Alpha command?" "So instead, we have to stand around and do shit all to protect her?!" "Yes!" "I can't do that! If you won't fight for your mate, then I will!" "Max, stop!" "Why!?" "We have to let her go. She has to find out. She needs to know who she is. This is a lot on her already. My father isn't the man you think he is. I will take over the pack, and I will protect Sawyer while making everything right again." "So what? We los
They all just stared at me. I felt uncomfortable. "Can someone say something?" "Sorry. Sawyer, I just haven't figured out what we should do. I just know I have to keep you safe," Krewe said as he came to kneel beside me and take my hand. "Safe from what?" I felt so confused. What happened? Why was I being kept away from what I was? What did Krewe know? "I can't tell you. Not yet." "So what do I do?" "I'm not sure." "This isn't fair! This is all so new to me. I want answers, I want to know why I've been kept a secret all these years. I don't get it, and if you won't tell me, then I guess I will go home and ask my aunt and uncle." I got up and stormed upstairs to grab my belongings. I didn't want to be here anymore. I didn't want to feel this pain anymore. I felt betrayed as everyone had this deep secret about me, and I was being left out. It was my life. I should have a say. I went back downstairs and headed for the door. I could hear them all whispering. "Sawyer, pl
I felt like I had the best sleep of my entire life. I felt warm and rested until I felt a hard body pressed up against me. I stretched and turned and saw Krewe sleeping behind me. I remember laying down with him, but when did he get naked? I quickly checked to make sure I wasn't naked, but no, thankfully, I still had my clothes on. I lifted the blanket and crawled out of the bed, and grabbed the blanket on the end of the bed to drap over him. As soon I had it on top of him, he woke. "Good morning." His voice was still deep and raspy from sleep. "You do realize you're naked?" "I am? Oh yea, I went for a run last night." He said it so casually like it shouldn't matter. I've never been with a naked man. It does matter. I didn't grow up with wolves. This is just awkward. I could feel my cheeks heating up the longer I just stared, dumbfounded. Talk Sawyer, talk. "Well, don't you think you would be more comfortable with some clothes on?" "Oh, shit, yea. I hope I didn't freak y
I could feel the soft rise and fall of her chest as she slept peacefully beside me. I took a look at the time on my watch. It was only 10 PM, I could make it home in time to ask my father more questions and make it back before the morning. "Dad, I need to speak with you. I'm going to run back. Let the night patrol know it's only me running through the pack lands." "I will be in my office. I've got a lot to finish up still. See you soon, son." I closed off the mindlink as I snuck away from the bed and out of the room. Max stood there in the hallway with a glass of water. "What the fuck man?" "This isn't the time to talk. I have to head home quickly." "No! You said I could go for it. You said you didn't mind. You just can't let me have anything, can you? Mr. Alpha has to have everything? Fuck you, man." "That's not it, okay, Max? I will explain everything in the morning." Max shook his head as he went back into his room, "Whatever. I'm done." I felt bad, but I knew I
Krewe had set me up in a room for the night next to his. He provided me with a t-shirt of his to sleep in, and Liz gave me a bunch of options for the next day. My aunt and uncle believed my story, and I was happy to stay. Krewe and I had kept our distance the rest of the evening, and I had made an effort to avoid Max as well. Krewe had asked to keep things under wrap until tomorrow when we would speak with Max and Liz. I agreed to his plan. I slipped into the t-shirt, only keeping my panties on underneath. It was a thinner material in white. So it was a bit risqué. However, no one would see me. Until there was a knock at my door. I opened the door and peeked out. "Oh, hey, Max! What can I do for you?" He stood there with no shirt on and only his pajama trousers. "Just wanted to make sure you were settling in okay for the night." He looked shy but amazing! He just didn't compare to Krewe the more I let my feelings take over. "I am, thanks! I was just about to lay do
