The morning after the party, I had woken up early to talk with my father at breakfast. He was a busy man. He was Alpha of one of the biggest packs in the area. Sometimes, it seemed like there were just too many wolves in the pack for him to control at times. We always had issues with fights breaking out among our pack. I never understood why, though.

I was really young when my father decided to expand our borders and take in more wolves. He always said there were so many wolves out there with no home or direction. He just wanted to help them all. I admired that about him. Maybe that was Sawyers case. Maybe her family never had a pack to live amongst, which is why they chose to live with humans.

I headed for the dining room. Dad sat there drinking his coffee while waiting to be served. Mom was sitting next to him, looking over some documents.

"Morning son! Come join us!" his voice boomed through the room. He always knew how to draw attention.

"Good morning, Father. Mother," I rounded the table and leaned in to give my mother a kiss on the cheek before sitting next to my father.

"You're up early," she eyed me carefully.

"There was something I was hoping to discuss with you both."

"What is it?" my father asked.

"On our way to the lake house for a party the other night, we met a wolf. Close to my age, but she didn't seem to know she was, and her scent seemed off too. It was almost like a mix of human and wolf. She worked at a diner in the human town."

"Not uncommon for some wolves to live amongst the humans. You know that."

The waiters came in with plates of food. My father started to dig in.

"Continue," he said.

"Well, she wore this pendant. I think it may be the reason she doesn't know she's a wolf."

"What sort of pendant?" he said as he placed a fork full of food into his mouth.

"It was a wolf with a full moon in the background."

My father suddenly started choking, so I patted his back, "What do you mean it was a wolf with a full moon?"

"I mean, it was a wolf with a full moon in the background. What's wrong with you? You okay, father?"

"Yea, the food just went down wrong. Have to watch myself these days, I am getting older," he nervously laughed.

My mother looked at him with concern written all over her face.

"Tell me more about this girl."

"Well, I don't know much. I caught her at a party the other night so I could ask her more about the necklace. She didn't know much about it. That's why I think she may have been given it to keep her from shifting. Like someone wanted her to blend in with the humans. Maybe her mother and father? I just can't figure out what pack it would have been from."

"Son, I don't think that's for you to worry about. Forget about it. I would also leave her alone," he looked at me sternly. I knew he wouldn't want me to see her again. He didn't want anything to do with the humans. He was concerned about protecting the pack.

"I was thinking of going to the lake house again today. Maybe spend the week there with Max and Elizabeth?"

"As long as you go straight there. No more visiting this diner. You should have plenty of supplies at the house."

I stood up to leave.

"I don't want you visiting this girl anymore. Okay?"

If he knew she was my mate, he would freak out. He didn't need to know this, so I kept it to myself.

"I promise!" I said with my fingers crossed behind my back. What he didn't know wouldn't harm him. I'd get to the bottom of this.

"Goodbye darling! Have fun at the lake house."

"Thanks, mother!"

With that, I took off to my room to pack a bag. The lake house was closer to the human town. I mindlinked Max and Elizabeth to tell them to meet me there later that evening. That should buy me enough time to stop into the town and watch her for a bit. Give me a chance to observe and catch an opportunity to speak with her.

Once I finished packing, I left. The drive would take me a couple of hours to get there. That should be plenty of time, especially for a weekday. She was probably at school. I'd park the car off in a plaza parking lot and then walk over to the woods, which seemed to surround the town and watch for her by the school.

She was my mate and I had to know more. She smelt good and looked amazing. The most beautiful girl I had ever seen. She had long golden brown locks that had been sunkissed by the sun. She had a slender, althetic build but curves in all the right places. Her skin was slightly tanned, and her lips a beautiful shade of pink. I don't think she knew just how beautiful she was. If she did, she wouldn't let a guy treat her the way that guy did at the party. Who cheated on a girl as beautiful as her? I'd never let her slip out of my grasp if she was mine. Then again, I did have a girlfriend back at the pack. Her name was Shiloh, or Shy for short. We've been together for a couple of years now, and my parents were fond of her. I'm sure they wouldn't approve of Sawyer, not with the way they reacted this morning.

With Saywer not even aware of being a wolf, maybe I wouldn't have a problem letting her go.

"She's ours and worth pursuing."

"Okay, Tye," I said just to calm him down.

"You should break up with Shy now and focus on finding Sawyer. She needs us. We need to mark her and make her ours."

"That's not happening anytime soon. Especially since she's unaware that she's a wolf."

"In due time, Krewe. She will know, and you better listen to me. Otherwise, she will leave and be someone else's mate."

"Yea, yea," I shoved him back to the darkness of my mind and focused on driving.

I sat on the back deck with Liz as Max got the grill going. They were being so nice to me. They accepted me for who I was. This whole wolf thing was so ordinary for them that it made me forget who I truly was. I didn't feel like a freak, but I needed more. I needed more answers. Like, why my aunt and uncle are making me wear that necklace instead of telling me about who I really am? "Sawyer, are you good with burgers?" "Definitely. Thanks, Max." Krewe had excused himself and took off inside. I was starting to get used to the sensitivity of scent and hearing. I could tell he wasn't around the house right now. I wonder where he went. Maybe it had something to do with Shiloh? Maybe there was more there than I knew? "Hey, Sawyer! How about we go for a swim in the lake! It's such a beautiful day!" "I'd love to, but I don't have my swimsuit with me." "You can borrow one of mine! Come on!" Liz grabbed me by my hand again, and we made our way into the house, to a bedroom upstai

It was 11:30 A.M. already, and I hadn't seen Sawyer at school yet. I started to worry. My class needed my attention, but I was fading as my mind wondered to her. "Mr. Henderson?" A student stood in front of my desk. "Yes?" "The bell rang, are we able to leave?" "Sorry, class. Please finish up chapter 12, and we will review it tomorrow." "Thank you, Mr. Henderson." I grabbed my things and headed outside to see if I could spot her in the football fields. It was a nice day, so I figured she would be with the other cheerleaders. I couldn't even scent her anywhere in the halls. My mind was so preoccupied with trying to get outside that I didn't realize I bumped into her best friend, Ceasar. "Sorry, Mr. Henderson. I didn't see you there." He probably didn't see me or care to as he was too busy typing away on his phone. "It's all good, Ceasar." "Have a good day, Mr. Henderson." "Actually, Ceasar, have you seen Sawyer?" "No. She's not at school today." "Thank y

I grabbed her hand, and it felt glorious. Her hand fit in mine perfectly. The bond felt better than I could have imagined. I grabbed it without thinking of Shy, though. Sawyer must have felt something off because as quickly as I grabbed it, she was just as quick to let go. She was perfect, though, composing herself and introducing herself to Shy like a true Luna would despite the awkwardness. Shy saw the hand hold, and that was my first mistake because she went off on Sawyer. It didn't have to mean anything, but she wolves, especially dating Alphas, are quite possessive. They know if their not fated to us that they really are disposable. "Shy!" I called out after chasing after her, "can you stop and talk to me?" "Talk to you! How dare you!" "What did I do?" "I saw the way you looked at her, the way you held her hand. Why would you bring your next conquest here while you still have a girlfriend?" "I didn't! We just met." "She means more to you than that. Be honest, Krew

The next morning, I woke up feeling refreshed after having one of the best sleeps of my life. It was as if my nerves and thoughts finally quieted and relaxed me. "It's because I've been suppressed this whole time. Now we can let our true self be free." "I don't know about that yet. I don't think humans are supposed to know about us." "No, but we can find a pack to live in! We can be surrounded by our own. We can live free there." "I don't know the first thing about a pack or werewolves. Maybe I should mention something to Ma and Pa?" "Hmm, they are wolves." "Their what!?" "Their wolves too, can't you smell them?" "Is that what the new smell in the house is?" "Yes, everyone has a unique smell to them as a wolf. Usually, it is quite an earthy scent. Your mate, however, will smell differently. Of smells that really speak to you." "I don't think I should let Ma and Pa know just yet. They always told me not to take off the necklace. If I won't put it back on, then I sh

I could feel eyes on me as I dangled my feet in the water. I didn't want to give whoever it was the satisfaction that I knew right away. Instead, I sniffed the air and could smell her sweet scent. My mate. I looked up and stared in the direction that I could feel she was standing. I couldn't see anything. Her wolf must be a tracker and a good one at that. I stared and started to slowly get up, but that's when she took off. Her emotions are raw and uncontrolled right now. She needs to listen to her wolf right now for guidance. I can't push too hard, or I will scare her away. That would be the worst thing I could do. So I stood and stretched before taking my pants off and jumping into the cold water for a swim. I needed to relax my mind. I couldn't believe it when she asked me to come watch her practice or even when she asked me to come back to her place. When I got into her room and her scent hit me as hard as it did, I wanted to jump her, mark her, make her mine. Then she as

Krewe ended up coming to practice. He sat in the bleachers, and I waved to him as I ran towards the cheer squad. "I don't think Tom's going to be too happy seeing that guy here," Cassandra said with a sneer. "Why would Tom care?" I scanned the field for Tom. His jersey number was 22, but I hadn't caught sight of him yet. "Why!?" She scoffed, "Maybe because that guy hit him." She folded her arms across her chest. "I didn't know about any of that." "Yea, because you're always leaving your man for others to take care of. Where were you later that night when that went down?" "I had gone home. I wasn't feeling well." "Mhmm. Anyways, girls, let's get started." I looked up to Krewe sitting on the bleachers and wondered why he would have done such a thing. He smiled, so I politely waved back before beginning practice. "Hey babe! How's it going?" Tom put his arm around me after practice ended. "Where did you come from? I didn't see you when I got here?" "I was probably st
