LEONA’S POV

I didn’t sleep that night, I sat on my kitchen floor with my back against the cabinets, staring at nothing actually, replaying the moments in my head. It should have felt enough but for some reason, it didn’t.

By morning I tried to convince myself I could still fix this. I showered, changed, and drove straight back to the hospital because that was the only place I needed to be right now.

Maddy’s room was quiet except for the constant beeping sounds of the machines keeping track of her. I sat in the same chair I’d cried in the day before and took her

“Morning, love,” I said, hoping she would respond. I don’t know how long I sat there, but I knew that it was long enough.

Two officers walked in without knocking, and I knew deep down within me that Mr. Adams wasn’t one of them.

“Leona Vermont?” The taller one spoke out loud, even though it wasn’t really a question.

I stood slowly, still holding Maddy’s hand. “That’s me.”

“You’re under arrest for assault, unlawful possession of a firearm, and criminal threatening.” He was already reaching for his cuffs. “You have the right to remain silent.”

The rest of it blurred into noise. I looked back at Maddy one last time as they turned me around, her chest rising and falling under that thin hospital blanket, then my chest began to hurt.

“Please,” I said, though I wasn’t sure who I was talking to anymore. “She needs me.”

Nobody answered. Fucking bastards!!

They walked me out through the corridor in cuffs, past nurses and the strangers in the hospital. I definitely looked like the bad guy. I didn’t have the energy to argue, either… otherwise.

The holding cell was cold, I sat on the metal bench and stared at the wall, and for the first time since the accident, I let myself cry without any intention of stopping it.

My court-appointed lawyer looked barely older than me. “They’re saying you threatened Reynolds Miller with a firearm,” he said, flipping through pages. “There’s footage.”

“No shit. Footage of what exactly?”

“Enough.” He didn’t look up. “His father’s already made calls. This isn’t going to go the way you want it to.”

I let out a fake laugh. “Nothing ever does.”

The hearing took less time this time around. I was shocked because I know it takes longer than that. I stood there listening to words like unstable and history of violence alongside danger to herself and others, and I watched the judge’s face carefully, hoping for a glimpse of doubt but there wasn’t any.

Alexander Miller sat in the back row the entire time, saying nothing. His presence alone was doing the work for him and honestly, he shouldn’t have bothered coming.

When they announced I was being remanded pending psychiatric evaluation, I turned around, searching the room for anyone especially my father but he wasn’t there. Of course, he wasn’t. Maddy couldn’t be and that part broke me honestly.

They transferred me three days later. Nobody told me where but I was in a van with blacked-out windows and two orderlies.

“Where are we going?” I asked, for the fourth or fifth time.

“Somewhere you’ll get the help you need,” one of them said, in a certain awkward tone.

I stopped asking after that. I was this close to cussing them out but no, they were not worth shit at all.

****

The building they brought me to looked nothing like a hospital at all. It had white corridors and locked doors within locked doors with no noise at all.

They took my clothes first, replacing them with a number and a set of pale scrubs that didn’t fit right. A woman with a clipboard asked me lots of weird questions. I didn’t bother answering honestly, because I had already learned that honesty here only ever worked against me. Heck, even in the real world.

“Do you hear voices?” She asked.

“No.”

“Do you believe people are trying to harm you?”

I let out a side smile on my face and chuckled. “I don’t believe it dear… I know it.”

She wrote something down without looking up and honestly at this point, I didn't bother anymore. That first night I lay on a bed, in a room with no windows, and let myself think about Maddy for the first time all day.

I missed her and how she would fall asleep against my shoulder halfway through a movie, she would laugh so hard.

I found myself smiling so much at myself. Gosh, she would drive forty minutes in the rain because I said I wasn’t okay and she didn’t believe me one bit when I said I was fine.

I love you Maddison Alaine, I thought, staring at the ceiling. I’m sorry I ever touched you. I’m sorry I ever loved you the way I did….regardless, I’m not sorry it’s real.

Somewhere down the hall someone screamed, long and rough, and no one came running. I flinched at the sound and then forced myself still.

A nurse came by sometime after, sliding a small paper cup of pills through the slot in the door without a word.

“What is this?” I asked.

“Your evening medication.”

“I didn’t consent to medication.”

She didn’t answer, just stood there like a statue, waiting, until it became clear that refusing or being stubborn wasn’t actually an option.

I swallowed them because I didn’t yet know what would happen if I didn’t and my instinct kept disturbing me deep inside me.

As the drowsiness crept in, blurring the edges of the room, I thought about Reynolds standing in his living room, glass in hand, telling me Maddy was better off without me. Maybe he was right or maybe I had ruined the one good thing that had ever happened to me the moment I let myself want it… want her so badly.

Regardless, I was not going to give up. All I knew, as sleep finally dragged me under, was that Maddison Alaine was still out there somewhere, and I intended to find my way back to her no matter what it took me.

The last thing I remembered before the sleep took over completely was her voice on the phone. ‘Loena’.

I held onto it like and the sweet slumber took me away.

LEONA’S POVI let a week pass before I confronted her, a week of restless nights, of turning that overheard conversation over and over until I couldn’t stand carrying it alone anymore.Octavia was in the same room I first met her in, standing at the same window, like she never left.“I heard you,” I said, before she could turn around. “You and Mara. A week ago and I have been trying to decide since then whether I actually wanted to know, or whether it was easier to keep pretending I didn’t actually know shit.”Her shoulders went stiff upright before they relaxed a bit.“I assumed you might.”“Then stop making me wait for it.” My voice shook. “Tell me exactly what you did.”She turned slowly, and she looked older than the version of herself she’d been presenting, “Sit down.”“I don’t want to sit down. I want the truth.”“Sit down, Leona,” she uttered.“You’ll want to be sitting for this.”Octavia lowered herself into the chair across from me, hands folded in her lap, she said nothing at

  • The Last Vermont: Loving Maddison Alaine (GL)   CHAPTER TWELVE

LEONA’S POVI didn’t sleep again that night either, I laid in that soft bed staring at a ceiling I couldn’t see in the dark, turning Octavia’s words over and over till the words started to hurt my eyes. A reason she would rather raise you in poverty with a man who beat you than risk you ever setting foot in this house. What kind of house does that? What kind of family makes a mother choose violence over her own blood.Even as I turned it over, my mind kept sliding sideways and I wondered if she was sleeping right now, wherever she was or if the headaches Mara mentioned were keeping her up too, both of us were awake in the dark for entirely different reasons.I pressed the heel of my hand against my sternum. I haven't touched her in weeks nor have I heard her voice but here I was, lying in a stranger’s house discovering I had a grandmother and none of it meant anything to me at all except for the fact that Maddison Alaine might wake up tomorrow and never think of me at all.*****Mara

LEONA’S POV“She gets paid more money than she’s ever seen in her life to come,” Mara said, already pulling me toward the car. “Then, I suggest you ask better questions later but right no? We move.”I didn’t argue, I climbed into the car, and the second the door shut behind me, I felt relief, disbelief and grief all tangled together so tightly I couldn’t tell where one ended and the next began.“Where are we going?” I asked, staring out the window as the institution shrank behind us, finally leaving this shit hole.“Somewhere safe… for now.” Mara didn’t look at me, eyes fixed forward, scanning the road like she expected trouble at every turn. “Tomorrow you’ll meet her.”“Say what now?.”“Octavia.” Mara’s mouth curved. “Your grandmother.”I let that settle over me slowly, the weight of a word I had never had reason to use in my entire life. Grandmother, like I was someone with family and like I was someone worth crossing this many lines to save.“Why does she want me?” I asked quietly.

  • The Last Vermont: Loving Maddison Alaine (GL)   CHAPTER TEN

LEONA’S POV‘Soon’ turned out to mean four days. Gosh, I don’t know why I kept my hopes so high for nothing, though nobody told me that until it was already happening. Do I feel fucking stupid? Hell yes. Will I give up still? Hell no.I didn’t see Mara again after that conversation, no note or message slipped under my door, nothing to tell me whether she had meant what she said or whether I had imagined the entire thing out of my utmost desperation to believe someone was still fighting for me. Low-key, I felt really angry but another part of me just gave up on the idea that she’d stay true to her words, whatever happened, I would still prevail regardless. ******The silence ate at me worse than Ingrid’s drawings ever had but at least Ingrid gave me something to brace against and I clearly couldn’t say I missed it, that girl was hella crazy. It was just that the more the silence was, the more it gave me time to spiral.I kept my head down, ate what they gave me, even when it turned

  • The Last Vermont: Loving Maddison Alaine (GL)   CHAPTER NINE

LEONA’S POV“You don’t want to do this,” I said, low, gripping the tray tighter.“I’ve wanted this for days now.” Ingrid’s voice sounded so lustful. “Ever since they brought you in… oh gosh, I have always wanted you mama. I want to make you scream on top of your voice and call my name proudly.” She stepped forward. “Finally, you’re mine tonight.” A dark smile crept on her face. “I remember how you usually scream at the doctors or fight five of them at once. I watched through the window and I thought, finally… finally someone real.”“I’m not what you think I am.”“You’re exactly who I think you are.” She took another step, and the light caught the object in her hand again, a piece of plastic, filed down to something with intent. “Everyone else in here is broken and empty. You’re not empty baby girl, you’re still fighting and I can feel it coming off you.” My back was flat against the wall now with nowhere left to go and for one terrifying second I was seven years old again in my mind

  • The Last Vermont: Loving Maddison Alaine (GL)   CHAPTER EIGHT

LEONA’S POVShe left before I could ask another question and I sat there in that little room with a freaking stranger’s note against my wrist.Honestly, I felt conflicted between two truths I didn’t know how to hold them both at the same time.Maddy was gone, at least the version of her that I remembered loving me back and now, someone, somewhere outside these walls was still fighting to bring me back and hopefully get me out of this shit hole of a prison. That night, alone in my cell, I finally unfolded the paper with my hands and I could barely keep it steady. I guess, I was too anxious to look at it.Finally, I saw what was written and it read: Your grandmother is coming for you.I read it so many times yet still none of it made sense, I didn’t have a grandmother and my mother never spoke about family, not once, not even when she was dying and even after everything, they left me with debts and a father who fought like an untamed beast.I hid the note in the same place I had hidden
