CHAPTER 3: THE ACCUSATION

last update 公開日: 2026-04-23 07:06:28

MENODORA’S POV

The opportunity came faster than I anticipated…

On the night that changed everything, the air felt similar to the night that I was born. The tension and uneasy watching, almost like the forest was waiting for something, but at the time, I wasn't sure what it was waiting for.

I just finished an unsuccessful hunt, my breath is coming out in shallow painful pants and my heart drums a frantic rhythm against my ribs. For some reasons that I cannot fathom, the air feels heavy and the metallic tang of fear lingers at the back of my throat.

“Something is terribly wrong…” the quietness of the forest puts me on edge, even the wind has stilled.

My claws tingle beneath my skin, my shift threatening to overtake me once again.

“Not now please…” I whisper, my fingers curl inward and my claw-nails dig deep into my palms, creating little red crescents as I fight hard to keep my shift in check. The feeling only grows stronger, something is out there calling out to my wolf or maybe trying to warn her of impending danger.

“ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHH,” a blood-curdling shriek rings through the trees, piercing through the stillness of the forest. My legs suddenly lose coordination with my brain, totally refusing to propel me forward as I stay rooted to the same spot, my heart drumming a frantic beat between my ribcage.

“That voice…,” I let out a painful gasp. I know that voice, in fact it's a voice everyone is familiar with. It belongs to the Alpha's sole heir.

Without conscious thought, I am already moving forward in the direction of his voice, my legs guided by pure instincts and all the while conscious of the fact that something ancient is stirring awake within me.

“Too late…too late…too late,” I chant like a mantra when I finally reach the clearing. I smell it before I even see him, that rich tangy iron scent of blood, clinging heavily to the back of my throat and causing my whole body to shake uncontrollably.

“Run!" my instincts scream at me but my legs remain fixed to the same spot. My eyes roam his body that lay in the centre of the clearing, his chest gaping open and his ribs split wide as though whatever killed him had clawed right through him.

From his wounds flowed a crimson torrent that turned the earth beneath him into a thick clinging mud that drank his life force away, feeding it to the trees instead like he was an offering made to the forest gods.

With a deep inhale, I let my feet sink into the muddy earth, trusting my feet to guide me against my fears.

“Oh-" a ragged breath escapes my lips as I stand over his body. His body is carved with a number of claw marks, but something about them feels unsettling.

Looking down at my own fingers, it comes to me immediately.

“No…,” I stagger backwards for the umpteenth time tonight “no…that's not possible…”, but the truth stares me right in the face. The claw marks are exactly shaped like my claws…jagged and unstable.

“Over there, he's over there." My head immediately whips in the direction of the voices. Warrior after warrior burst through the clearing, they're too many and everything is moving too fast for me to keep up with.

Their eyes land on the body that still lays on the ground and slowly, like the pull of a tide coming in, their focus is pulled away from the body and settles on me like dust on an abandoned armchair.

The silence that follows is deafening, almost similar to the moment just before glass shatters.

“I…didn't…do…it,” I stammer, shaking my head in disbelief at how I have quickly become a prime suspect in a murder I have no idea how it even happened.

“You're here right now and you want us to believe that?" That is all it takes and the accusation that were only thoughts in their minds begin to take shape. The accusation hangs heavy in the air, like a blanket placed over my face to suffocate the life out of me.

“I didn't do it, I swear," I try again, my voice comes out louder and shrill with desperation, but my words fall on deaf ears. The attention that lay upon me heavily like a mask is now turned to the body that lay on the ground and the warriors slowly begin to examine each mark with painstaking patience.

Without looking at the body, I know what they're seeing because for the past half hour, I stood over the same body, examining the same lines till I could tell the difference in the length and width of each of them.

“The marks are similar," I hear one of them, the closest to me, whisper to his other colleague, before he turns and looks at my fingers now folded in front of me.

“The curse has finally caught up with us," I hear another whisper, glancing in my direction before quickly glancing back to avoid being affected by whatever plagued me.

“She did it…”

"I DIDN'T DO IT,” I scream, my voice cracking through the silence like the whip of a horse. "I literally just got here…" that is partially a lie, but they didn't need to know that I have been here for more than half an hour now.

“I heard a scream and came rushing to see…”

"Silence!" My words are immediately cut off by the command that comes from between the trees. All eyes turn in the direction of the voice and the crowd parts to allow the Alpha step through the clearing with the members of the Moon Council on his heels.

His presence is overwhelming and suffocating, making the space feel smaller than it really is and his gaze is calculative and chilling in a way that turns my blood into ice. His eyes flicker to the body for a split second and his features are overtaken with grief before he straightens his back, his entire being filled with raw determination.

So you see someone standing over a body that looks so freaking mutilated... there's no blood on the girl... no sign of rage on her expression... no injury of her own or blood under her nails and you decide "OH MEEE GOSH. SHE'S A F*CKING KILLER" Soooo smart

MENODORA'S POV The tightness in his jaw completely unravels and it causes his lips to part just enough to let his guard down. I guess this strategy works well after all.“I know.” A quiet defeated breath slips past his parted lips.“So no more secrets right?"“Hmmm" “You're so annoying when you do that."“I know…" a mischievous smirk plays at the edges of his lips.I stare at him long and hard, not sure if I want to throw him down the valley or just hurl myself off into the mountains. Then I let out a slow theatrical hiss of air, my gaze lifting towards the sky, sending a quick prayer to the moon goddess for patience.“I really cannot believe how I became friends with you both," Kova says and he looks genuinely offended. “Bunch of idiots," I hear him mutter under his breath.“Friends? Since when did we become friends?" Orvax and I echo, both our eyelids slowly fluttering up at him in utter disbelief. The corner of Kova’s mouth quirks upward as he holds back a laugh."I finally got t

MENODORA'S POV“Tell my daughter...I have finally found her,” I hear Kova say and it feels like a boulder has been physically slammed into me. None of us speak, unsure of what to say to break the silence. The silver pendant still rests in my palm, the weight of it heavier now with the message behind it. The moonlight catches against the polished metal and the crescent gleams softly, like a silent answer to the moon from which it is born.I stare at the wolf if it is curled around, protecting it…or maybe it is trapping the wolf. I couldn't decide which of the interpretations to accept. A restless vibration hums deep in my bones, travelling from my arms down until it reaches my fingertips. They flutter like little birds caught in a trap, unable to stay still for even a second.Silently, I close trembling fingers around the pendant. It feels cold to touch, like a captured shard of winter, its porous surface stealing the warmth from my palm.“Menodora?" I look up to see Kova staring down

ORVAX'S POVI hold his gaze in mine.“I may not be able to save everyone, but I can save this one.”With that, I walk away, Menodora on my mind. I have an idea of where she might have gone. Not because of any mate bonds or mind links communicating between us, but simply because I built this place and I know from experience that lonely people would always look for quiet. With painstakingly slow steps, I make my way to the western cliffs that overlook Rogue land. It is a place that few people visited due to the cold winds that naturally blew here. The silence today seems deeper than usual. I find her seated on the old stone wall overlooking the valley, bathed in the silver light of the moon that hangs above the mountains. She refuses to turn around to acknowledge my presence and for the slight tensing of her shoulders, I'd have been so sure she didn't hear me approach.“I knew you would come find me." Her words caused my heart to feel light. I walk closer, careful not to startle her wit

ORVAX'S POV The moment is shattered, instantly lost when my father lets out a low chuckle.“That's quite amazing, isn't it?" I turn to look at him, the look in my eyes is so dangerous, enough to bend iron effortlessly. His expression only grows taut, his mouth curling into a razor-thin crescent. His smile did not bring me any form of comfort, only sharpening the air in the room instead."You know, there was once a time when you would give anything if it meant upholding your principles,” he pauses for dramatic effects or whatever mind games he's playing. "And now?”I can feel the entire room hold its breath in anticipation of his next words. My father's attention turns towards Menodora and back at me. He smiles then, the same smile that reminds me of a hunter who has finally caught his prey.“Now, I am led to believe that there is one thing that you truly cannot stand to lose." I hear Kova curse under his breath. Menodora's eyes widen slightly, like little saucers on her face and th

ORVAX'S POV"What does that mean?” Menodora's brow furrows in a slight frown. "What are you…” She trails off, her voice dropping to a fragile wavering whisper. She looks away, eyes darting between us both, trying to read the truth in our eyes.My father stands, arms casually folded across his broad chest. He leans back against the wall with the effortless swagger of someone who has absolute control over the room…and maybe he does. After all, we're just mere pawns in his big game of chess. Seeing him stand like that, you'd think we are merely just discussing the weather and not destroying lives in the worst way possible."Your father was not a peasant like you were led to believe," he says.Anxiety knots tighter in my guts than a hangman's noose, turning my stomach into a mess of coiled spring. From across the room where Menodora has moved to, trying to get a grip of herself, I see her go completely still. That feeling, it is one that I am very familiar with. Where it feels like your l

ORVAX'S POV“No…” the words do not form in my vocal cords nor does it leave my lips…at least not yet. But I feel it echo through my skull, pressing against the walls of my medulla like a life threatening tumour. The moment my father touches upon the mere idea of Menodora’s father, a fear so visceral and ancient rises within me…stirring like a storm on the sea.Somehow, I recognised that name…without even meaning to, he somehow managed to confirm what I suspected from the very moment I laid my eyes on her. Turning to her, Menodora stands frozen. I can see it in her eyes, willing her feet to move…to retreat from the can of worms my father has left open in the room…but her ankles refuse to obey. She stands there locked in place as if anchored to the earth by heavy leaden weights.I watch as her eyes dart across the room, from one face to another, the world she thought she was familiar with suddenly rearranging itself into an illegible puzzle she is yet to solve. Her pupils are wide, desp
