Calista's POV
"Hold still, Dad." I adjusted my father's collar as he stood in front of the mirror looking like a man being marched toward execution. "I don't care about the collar," he muttered. "I care about surviving this meeting." A laugh escaped me. My father was one of the elders of our pack. Normally calm and respected, he always became nervous whenever the Alpha Council gathered, but today seemed worse. "You'll be fine,” I said, trying to ease his fears, but it wasn’t working. "That's easy for you to say." Before I could tease him further, my mother walked into the room carrying a silver pin. She attached it neatly to his jacket before stepping back to inspect him. "You do look nervous," she admitted. Father groaned. "Every important Alpha will be there," Mother continued. "Even the Alpha King." The color immediately drained from his face as I burst out laughing. He sat heavily on the edge of the bed. "Our Alpha will already be there. I don't even know why elders have to attend these things." "You know exactly why," Mother said. Father rubbed a hand over his face. "And somehow I'm expected to stand up and give a speech while the Alpha King watches." I rolled my eyes. "You act like he's going to eat you." Father gave me a look. "Nobody knows what he's capable of." Here we go again. Stories about the Alpha King had circulated for years. Some claimed he could control wolves with a glance. Others said even powerful witches feared him. The most ridiculous rumor was that nobody had ever seen him shift. I had never believed any of it. People always exaggerated what they didn’t understand. The alpha king had lived for hundreds of years slaying enemies. For someone who didn’t have a wolf he was pretty powerful and had defended the lands without being a wolf. I knew arguing with my father was pointless as he eventually stood and picked up his phone from the bed. "Go get Jake. Tell him I'll be waiting at the edge of the pack. If he keeps delaying, I'll leave without him." I frowned. "Shouldn't the Alpha already know that?" Father smiled, "You know Jake." Unfortunately, I did. He was always late for his meetings. A few minutes later, my parents left for the council gathering, leaving me alone in the house. I grabbed my coat and headed for the Alpha's mansion. The walk wasn't long. Normally, seeing Jake always improved my mood. He was my mate. The man chosen for me by the Moon Goddess. The future Alpha of our pack. My future husband. As I crossed the pack grounds, wolves greeted me warmly. Many already referred to me as the future Luna seeing as I had been dating Jake for three years now and we were practically seen as a couple. I smiled and returned every greeting, completely unaware that my life was about to change. The guards opened the mansion gates the moment they saw me. "Future Luna,” the guard there smiled as I laughed. "Keep saying that and you'll make it sound official." The guards grinned as I entered. Everything looked normal. Servants moved through the halls carrying out their duties. The mansion was as spotless as ever. I headed for the staircase but before I reached it, someone hurried toward me. It was the head maid Helga. "Miss Calista,” she called. Something in her voice made me stop. "Yes?" She looked uncomfortable. "The Alpha is busy right now." I smiled. "That's okay. I'll only be a minute." But her expression tightened. "No. I mean... very busy." The smile slowly disappeared from my face. "I just need to tell him my father is waiting." "Perhaps you should come back later." My stomach twisted. Why was she trying to push me away? She wasn't meeting my eyes and that alone told me something was wrong. "Move." "Miss Calista, please." "I said move." She nodded and stopped aside as without another word, I brushed past her and climbed the stairs. The moment I reached the second floor, I heard it. A moan as everything inside me froze. For one second, my mind refused to understand what I'd heard. Then another sound followed coming from Jake's room. My heart dropped. I walked faster but the closer I got, the louder the sounds became. By the time I reached the door, my body was already restless. I shoved the door open as the world stopped. Jake stood in the middle of the room naked with one man on his knees before him, sucking him while another stood against his side with his hands on his bare chest. For a moment, nobody moved. Nobody breathed. Then rage exploded inside me. "Jake!" The men jumped apart as Jake spun around, horror flooding his face. "What are you doing here?" He asked, the question hitting me harder than the scene itself. Not an apology. Not an explanation. That. As if I was the one who had done something wrong. Jake quickly grabbed a blanket and wrapped it around himself. "You two, leave,” he commanded the men as they rushed out of the room without hesitation. The door closed behind us as silence settled between us. I stared at the man I had loved for years. My mate. The future I had planned my entire life around and suddenly I couldn't recognize him. Jake took a cautious step forward. "Calista, I can explain." A bitter laugh escaped my lips. Of course he could. Cheaters always had explanations. I looked him directly in the eyes and for the first time since meeting him, I wondered what kind of lie was about to come out of his mouth. I remembered all the pain I had gone through to protect him from what people had to say about him. I remembered all the tears I had endured as I thought he was my mate and would never cheat on me. But here I was. I was a joke and this man before me was about to lie in my face about what I had just seen.Calistas povThe moment I pushed them open, the guards standing outside went completely rigid, bowing deeply as Magnus strode out behind me.We walked out of the mansion and onto the wide green lawn. The entire courtyard was packed with pack members, servants, and warriors. The moment they saw me… the girl who had been dragged away in chains just an hour ago… walking freely alongside the legendary Alpha King, the crowd went dead silent. Hundreds of eyes stared at us in absolute shock, whispering frantically among themselves. We reached the gravel driveway where the black armored convoy was waiting. Magnus walked past his guards, stepping up to the lead SUV. Instead of getting in and waiting, he opened the heavy passenger door himself and stepped aside, looking down at me."Get in," he said.I gave a small gasp. The Alpha King was opening doors for a shiftless pack girl. I nodded quickly and climbed into the plush leather seat, and he slid in right beside me, his massive shoulder brush
Calistas povI leaned slightly closer to his desk, making sure my voice was low enough for him to hear."I have spent years writing detailed journals on shiftless wolves," I told him, keeping my eyes locked on his. "I have always been fascinated by the idea that amongst all my peers in this pack, I am the only one who can't turn into a wolf. It drove me crazy, so I started looking into it. And during my research, I heard stories of so many people in our pack and other packs who couldn't turn into a wolf either. I tracked their histories. I found patterns."Magnus listened attentively, his fingers tapping slowly against his chin. He nodded, his deep voice rumbling softly. "Okay. That is fine. If there are others like us, I would like to meet these other people. I want to know how they live, and if they feel the same power we felt today."I let out a sharp breath and shook my head. "That’s the problem, your Majesty."Magnus frowned, his massive brows knitting together. "What do you mean
Calistas povI stood tall in the center of the room refusing to let my knees buckle under the weight of the man sitting before me, the Alpha King. He was almost seven feet of pure muscle and dark tattoos that went all the way up his neck. The Alpha King looked like a god of war sitting behind that oak desk. I was not going to look down. I was not going to let the Alpha King see me tremble. The Alpha King crossed his legs, his dark eyes staring straight into my soul."Who are you?" He asked, his voice rumbling through the floorboards."My name is Calista," I said, my voice loud and clear. He stared at me for a moment then tilted his head, his eyes looking at my bruised face and the messy hair falling over my shoulders. A strange expression passed over his features."Calista,” he murmured, saying my name out loud. Then his eyes narrowed slightly. "You do not look very sorry for what you did, Calista."I let out a laugh, crossing my arms over my chest."Because I am actually not sorry,"
Magnus’s povThe air in the dungeon felt thick and heavy. My chest was heaving as the huge surge of power settled under my skin. For the first time in my life, I felt something within me wake up. It was roaring in a way that made my blood feel hot. I couldn’t take my eyes off the girl before me. I knew I had to calm down.I blinked hard then forced the light from my eyes. I turned my head slowly toward the men standing behind me."Kaelen," I said loudly, my voice shaking the dust from the stone ceiling. My Beta stepped forward right away. "Yes, my King?""Set up an investigation of what happened here. Now."Kaelen nodded. His face was very serious. "I will get on it right away, sire.""Wait, what?" Beta Paul said in shock. He stepped forward with his hands raised. He looked pale. His voice was heavy with worry. "Your Majesty, with all due respect. This is not possible. There is no need for an investigation. It is clear that she was the one who attacked the Alpha of our pack. We found
Alpha Magnus' POV The grand council hall was completely silent. Dozens of Alphas and elders from across the territories sat in the rows of stone seats before me, but nobody dared to breathe too loudly. I sat on my heavy, dark throne, my fingers lightly tapping against the carved armrest. I looked down at them all but they avoided my gaze. I knew what they saw when they looked at me. I was nearly seven feet tall, my frame built from centuries of war and pure muscle. Heavy dark tattoos spilled out from beneath my leather tunic, winding down my thick forearms and covering the backs of my hands. My voice, whenever I chose to use it, was a deep baritone rumble that could shake the dust from the ceiling. They feared me. They feared me because I was the Alpha King, and they feared me because of the rumors. Nobody in this room had ever seen my wolf form. Yet, they all knew I could break them without even trying. My Beta, Kaelen, leaned down toward my ear, his voice a low whisper.
Calista's POV I paced back and forth across the bedroom floor, my hands shaking so violently I had to clench them into fists. My vision blurred. My chest heaved. I couldn’t stop moving. The air in the room felt thick, smelling of sex, sweat, and betrayal. I looked at the rumpled bedsheets, then at the floor, and finally at him. "You do this with men?" My voice cracked, barely above a whisper. "You have sex with men?" Jake stood by the bed, the blanket wrapped tightly around his waist. He looked flushed, his hair messy, but the shock on his face was already turning into irritation. "Calista, just calm down for a second," he said, taking a step toward me. "It’s not what it looks like." "Not what it looks like?" I scoffed, a bitter, breathless sound. "I just walked in on two naked men on top of you! What else could it possibly look like, Jake?" "It’s just something I do occasionally," he said, shrugging his shoulders as if he were talking about a hobby. "It’s no big deal.
