Calista's pov

Dawn came far too quickly.

The ritual circle had been carved into the earth of the old training grounds, its edges glowing faintly silver in the pale morning light.

A crowd had already gathered along its border… elders in their ceremonial robes, nobles wrapped in furs, warriors standing at attention. Among them stood Stella, her face hard to read, and further back, my parents, held outside the circle by two guards who would not let them any closer.

Magnus stood at my side the ent

Magnus's povThe east wing collapsed behind us with a roar that shook the entire foundation of the mansion, sending a wave of heat and sparks rolling down the corridor we were sprinting through. Homer stumbled, his weakened legs finally giving out beneath him, and I caught him before he hit the floor, throwing his arm back over my shoulder even as I kept my eyes fixed on the ceiling above us, watching for the cracks that would warn us before it gave way."There," Kaelen shouted, pointing toward a side exit half-obscured by smoke. "That way, it's clear!"We ran for it, Calista's mother sobbing quietly with fear as Stella half-dragged her along, Calista herself moving beside me with a fierce, focused calm that told me she'd buried her own terror somewhere deep enough not to slow her down.We were three strides from the exit when the ceiling above it groaned.I saw it a second before it happened, the ancient beam directly over the doorway shuddering loose from its supports, and I did the

Calista's pov"Absolutely not," Magnus said, for the third time, pacing the length of the war room with his hands laced behind his back like he was physically restraining himself from throwing something. "I will not send you into Crescent Moon territory while whoever is behind this is still out there setting traps."“You saw what was written on that paper. They want me.”“I would tear down any mountain to keep you safe. Tossing you into the mouth of slimy wolves is not keeping you safe.”"You want to send the entire royal guard instead," I said, standing my ground on the other side of the map table, "which will announce our arrival from three miles out and give whoever is holding my parents plenty of time to disappear, or worse, hurt them before we ever reach the door.""A small force is still a force, Calista. It is not you walking into that territory practically alone.""I'm not going alone." I gestured at Kaelen, standing quietly by the door, and at Stella, seated at the end of the

Stella's povThey came for me at dawn, two guards at my door with the stiff posture of men who had been ordered to arrest someone they didn't actually believe was guilty."This is absurd," I told Kaelen, once I'd been dragged before him in the small interrogation chamber off the throne room, still in my sleeping robes, my hair unbrushed for the first time in longer than I could remember. "I had nothing to do with poisoning that girl.""You were seen near the tray," Kaelen said with a cold look. "Twice, according to witnesses. Once before the wine was poured, and once directly before it was served.""I was near the tray because I was avoiding my father's company for as long as socially possible," I snapped. "If you interrogate every noblewoman who ever hovered near a wine table to escape a tedious conversation, you'll have half the court in chains by nightfall."Kaelen's expression didn't shift, but I saw something behind his eyes like he didn’t buy what I was saying."Give me somethin

  • The Luna they cried monster   The Hunters line

Calista's povLord Robert had been in the palace for four days, and in that time he had managed to charm nearly every elder who had, mere days earlier, been ready to see me executed in a training yard.I didn’t know what he had spoken to Magnus about but Magnus refused to say anything to me about his meeting.I watched Robert turn a room of angry elders into his personal playground. A joke here, a compliment there, a carefully placed word of concern about "protecting the realm from forces none of us fully understand yet." He never mentioned me by name in front of the elders. He didn't need to. Everyone in the hall knew exactly who he meant."He's good," Stella murmured beside me, surprising me with her presence one evening. Since the day she'd revealed my bloodline, we hadn't exchanged more than a handful of tense words, and I still didn't trust the strained truce that had settled between us since the trial."Good at what?" I asked."Making people afraid without ever raising his voice

  • The Luna they cried monster   Claimed

Magnus's povThe word execution had barely left Garrow's mouth before I was on my feet, my body moving before my mind had finished deciding what it intended to do."You will not touch her." My voice tore through the training grounds with enough force that several of the gathered nobles flinched. "I vouched for her before this tribunal not twelve hours ago. That vow still stands.""A vow made in ignorance of exactly what she is capable of," Garrow shot back, gesturing at the shattered blade still scattered across the cracked earth. "You saw what happened here, Your Majesty. An ancient artifact obliterated. Every torch on these grounds extinguished in an instant. If this is what she does while merely defending herself, imagine what she could do provoked."Murmurs of agreement was heard through the gathered elders. I looked past them, to where Calista still stood in the wreckage, her face pale, her eyes wide like she was already accepting their verdict.I would not let her accept it.The

"I'd rather face it than run from it."Elder Garrow stepped into the center of the circle, holding a long, thin blade wrapped in dark cloth. Even from a distance, I could fe
