I sat there a long time after she drifted off, knuckles turning white on my knees, and my jaw clenched so tightly that my teeth hurt.

The room was quiet, and if it wasn’t for my wolf’s incessant snarling, I was sure my thoughts would spiral into a chaotic blend of guilt, shame, duty…everything that plagues me but that I would never speak aloud.

“Why do you refuse what was meant to be ours?” He raged, “Accept her and make her ours!”.

I closed my eyes and let the demand roll through me, savouring the feel of her body close to mine. It would be so easy to give in. To say the one truth my bones already knew and damn the rest.

But taking the easy option would get her killed. Easy gets omegas torn apart by gossip and politics and knives that smile when they bow.

“She’s an omega”, I told him. “An omega without a wolf. She wouldn’t survive what comes with me.”

“Liar”, he snapped back. “You don’t know that. You’re just afraid.”

“Afraid? “ I snorted. And shook my head.

I’d fought blood-crazed

We started running at the perimeter wall at dawn. Nolan wanted two circuits the first day, three the next, and by the end of the week, my lungs felt like they’d been set on fire, doused in water, and then twisted dry. Everything hurt.“Try to breathe on the third step,” Nolan said, pacing me as I ran, his stride easy at my side. “In for three, out for three. Rhythms can save lives.”“Tell my legs that,” I panted.“Tell them yourself. They listen to you, not me.” He half smirked backWe finished at the ladder squares, and he watched my feet like a hawk as I moved through the agility training. When I had finished, his eyes dropped to my feet, and he shook his head.“You look at your feet too much, it slows you down. Keep your eyes up and trust your body.”“My body and I are on terrible terms.” I forced out between gulping breaths of air.“Make friends with it then,” he said, deadpan, and clapped me on again. When I fumbled a pattern of squares with my steps, he didn’t sigh, and he didn

Since that night in the library, Rowan and I had slipped back into a rhythm I recognized too well.He was the King.I was the servant. We crossed paths when my duties required it, and we exchanged polite words but nothing more. His voice was clipped and careful when we spoke, and mine remained deferential. I called him “my King” every time, and though it broke my heart every time, I kept doing it. I couldn’t risk giving myself away again. And he… he let me.It wasn’t cruel, not like Marcus ever was, but the distance between us only seemed to grow wider. The closest of strangers, that’s what we had become.Strangely, I told myself it was acceptable. If I kept the distance between us, then maybe I could remember how to breathe without the bond clawing at me, and in doing so, keep both of us safe.Every morning now began the same way.Nolan’s voice snapped across the training yard before dawn as I tried desperately to ignore the shivers from the cold air biting through my thin tunic.“Fe

I suddenly felt sick. She knew.Of course she knew. This place has a hundred mouths, and all of them loved to whisper. My wolf raged in my head, almost feral now.“NO! Make her see that she is ours. Claim her so she knows that we don’t want anyone but her! “I gripped the table tightly to stop myself from reaching for her. “Is that what you think my silence is? A decision?”“It isn’t my place to think anything about your decisions.” She answered in that same cool tone as she straightened her shoulders, the movement small but deliberate. “You are the King.”“Stop hiding behind that,” I said. “Say my name.”Her eyes flashed defiantly up to mine. “No.” She almost hissed at me, “It’s safer if I don’t.”Safer from who? From me?! I bit back the growl trying to climb out of my throat and hooked a chair with my foot and sat down, close enough to feel the warmth from her arm. “Tell me what Nolan gave you,” I said as nonchalantly as I could manage, desperate to change the subject.I wanted

The stack of books on my desk didn’t just sit there, they stared at me. Four slim volumes, spines uncracked, lined up like a promise I’d been stubborn enough to make to myself. Tonight I’d give them to her and sit with her. I smiled at the thought of hearing her stumble through the shapes and the sounds and of seeing that stubborn spark in her eyes light up when the pieces clicked into place for her. Goddess knows that it wasn’t much, I couldn’t give her what the both of us wanted, but it was something I could give her that didn’t hurt.Except today, she didn’t knock on the door as she had done every other day.She was usually somewhere in my presence at this time of day, even if it was just passing by with a tray or a bucket, trying to make herself invisible. I waited too long for her to appear, and my anxiety grew with every passing second as my wolf paced under my skin.“Find her.” He growled. It wasn’t a request.“Where is she?” I snapped the moment Iris stepped into my office.I

The whispers about the Luna Game spread faster than spilled wine.I didn’t need anyone to explain the rules. The name told me everything that I needed to know.A contest, a stupid spectacle. A way for the ranked families to shove their daughters in front of Rowan until he picked one, crowned her Luna, and secured the throne with a bloodline that wouldn’t scandalize and alienate the entire kingdom. And I knew in my bones that would never be me.I wasn’t Luna material. I wasn’t even servant material, half the time… Marcus had made sure of that. I was too fragile, too soft, too easily broken... that was the story carved into me, and the bruises Rowan had left across my throat and wrists only proved it true. Even if it had been done in the throes of passion, I was almost positive that stronger she-wolves wouldn’t mark as easily.I told myself I didn’t care that this didn’t seem to be as important for him as it was for me.After all, I’d survived this long without a crown, without a mate,

The council chamber stank of fear.I could feel it before I even pushed the doors open, wolves whispering low, their voices fraying at the edges. The Blood Moon had passed, but its shadow lingered, crawling along the kingdom’s borders and seeping into the walls of my court.Jeremiah was already waiting when I entered, his stance stiff and eyes sharp. Nolan stood beside him, arms crossed, looking like he hadn’t slept since the Moon rose. Both of them bowed slightly, the weight of the council's protocol clinging to their movements, but their eyes told me what I already knew.Something was very, very wrong.“Report,” I said flatly, striding to the head of the table.Nolan stepped forward first, his voice clipped. “We’ve confirmed attacks along the southern and western borders. Not by rogues — something else. Packs reported shadow-like creatures moving faster than wolves. They leave no tracks. By the time anyone responds, livestock and even wolves are dead. No bite marks. Just blackened
